Somehow it's kind of collectively understood that jealousy and possessiveness played some kind of role in the break of John and Paul, but I raise you this: more open jealousy on Paul's side and more possessiveness on John's side would've saved them. But no, they both decided to go against their instincts for once in their lives.

The thing is, both of them are completely dysfunctional, but in their disorders actually very complementary to each other, so it used to work for them. As soon as Paul tried to be a better man and give John space, John was driving himself mad thinking he doesn't want him anymore. And John trying to make him jealous instead of just being plain possessive had directly backfired, because you can't make The Ram do anything by manipulation, as evidenced by Paul marrying first, getting the solo record out first, telling the press The Beatles are finished first. As Paul said, they "spurred each other into marriage", but it was actually Paul feeling himself "spurred into" all of those things. Maybe I'm completely delusional, but I really think John didn't want any of it to happen the way it did and used at least the concept of The Beatles breakup to pressure Paul into reacting. You don't want the breakup that seriously if you then proceed to try to contract trap him instead, to make him stay.

So, basically, what I'm saying is that Paul singing himself raw that he wants him and John on the other side, singing that he needs him and begging him to not leave him would've probably made a different story.
