“dude wake up” a voice said making you come back to reality, still in class lost in your thoughts because of how boring the class is. “huh what?” you said looking at your best friend chloe confused.

“i said chris invited us to his party, he just texted me” she said with excitement. chloe is a total fan of these house parties, you could say that she’s the girl in the movies they make about high school, kind, funny, extrovert and has it good with everyone.

“us? in you and i us??” you said “uh yes? who else is my best buddy ever??” she said rolling her eyes. “since when are you talking to chris?” you said looking at her suspicious.

“he is not that bad actually” she said pushing you playfully. “are we talking about the same chris? the one whose whole personality is his body?” i said rolling my eyes by the thought of him flexing his muscles. one thing about these guys are that they are so full of themselves and make it everyone’s business.

“he’s really sweet actually you’ll see” she said. she always tries to see the good in people which is sweet but sometimes that’s also a curse. “yeah no i’m not coming” i said looking forward to the class ‘listening’ to the teacher.

“oh come on it will be fun we’ll drink, dance, dress up” she said in a high pitched whisper trying not to get caught by the teacher but also to convince you.

she was sticking her hands together in a beg. how could anyone say no to her, plus you really need some fun, with this much studying you’ve done you need a little alcohol in your system. “okay fine” you said with a sigh. she was soundlessly clapping her hands happy that she convinced you to come with her

the bell rung and everyone started to get their stuff for lunch break. you were in the hallway with chloe talking about what you were going to wear when a voice yelled chloe’s name. you knew who it was before you even turned around. chris. he was coming forward chloe with a smile waving at her and so did chloe.

“hey ladies” he said with a smirk, you gave him a quick smile not really in the mood to talk especially to him. “how are we doing? are you ready for the party” he said winking at chloe, you rolled your eyes at the scene.

“of course we are, right?” chloe said elbowing you and you look at her giving you a look to speak. “oh yeah totally looking forward” you said sounding more sarcastic than you intended to.

chris frowned his eyebrows at you and then looked back at chloe.

“so uh anyways where are you going now?” he said. “at the cafeteria, you?” chloe asked. “same. we should all eat together, i mean you guys and my mates” he said with a smile looking at us waiting for an approval.

“oh my gosh totally” chloe said with a smile looking at you. you tried to give her a look that you didn’t want to. talking to one of them is total hell imagine 8 of them, total nightmare.

it obviously didn’t work because now you where sat with them eating your lunch. chloe was doing all the talk, you were just eating your lunch counting down until it was time for the next class to begin.

that’s when someone waved his hand in front of your face. you look at him, it was hyunjin, one of chris’ friends. you look at him annoyed. “what?” you said sounding even more annoyed. “where are you lost?” he said with a smirk. you rolled your eyes and kept eating your food. chloe was busy talking to chris, they look cute, chris is making some joke and chloe is laughing at it.

“what you don’t speak?” hyunjin said again with that annoying smirk not leaving once

you look at him again unbothered “i’d rather die than talk to you” you said. some of his friends tried to keep their laughter and hyunjin almost dropped his smirk. it seems like for once a girl doesn’t like him.

“you just did sweetheart” he said

‘sweetheart’ so cringe who does he think he is. “don’t ever call me that again” you said as you got up and put your trash in the bin.

you could feel hyunjin eyes on your back watching your every step.

you left the cafeteria without chloe, she was looking very busy anyways. you went to your locker to get your stuff for the next class.

after a long day at school you were finally home chilling at your bed scrolling on your phone. your phone buzzed and a notification popped up.

chloe: can i come by yours to get ready together

chloe: my brothers are giving me a hard time

you: yes my dude

after 30 minutes chloe had finally shown up. “dude are you moving in?” i said shocked by how much stuff she was carrying. “how else am i supposed to get all dolled up without this stuff?” she said totally serious, you laughed and you helped her get the stuff to your room.

music was playing from your phone, clothes and make up everywhere in your room, it was such a mess. “sooo” chloe said to get your attention, you were trying to find what you would wear. you look behind you confused to chloe who was doing her make up in your bed. “what?” you said

“i saw you talking to hyunjin at lunch” she said with a smirk, you rolled your eyes because you knew where this was going. “talking is an exaggeration, he is so annoying i don’t know how girls like him” “i don’t know how anyone likes him actually” you said annoyed thinking about the moment you had with him at lunch.

“i mean he is good looking and charismatic, i guess” chloe said finishing her eyelashes.

charismatic and hyunjin do not go together, he is the complete opposite, yeah sure he’s good looking he probably has a way with words when he talks to girls but his smirk is so annoying, his face is so annoying.

“whatever he’s ass, what about chris i saw you laughing your ass off at his jokes” i said grabbing a top from my closet

“oh shut up” she said with a smile as she threw at you a shirt.

“oww” you said as you grabbed the part of your body she hit you with faking that it hurt. you both started laughing and talking about so many different things.

almost ready you finished up with your perfume looking one last time yourself in the mirror. you were wearing low rise jeans that hugged your curves just right with a top that tied around your neck. your hair was long and wavy sitting just right and you were wearing chunky bracelets.

“you look beautiful” chloe said with a smile. she was wearing a very cute light pink short dress her blonde hair up in a ponytail. you two had very different aesthetic, you were like the ying yang so that’s maybe why you got so close to each other.

“says you, you are so pretty” *you said smiling and admiring her.

“okay let’s go already” she said as she started pushing you to get out.

you were right outside chris’ house. there were many people already, you could hear the music from inside, some people coming outside, others going inside. you admired how big the house was and you couldn’t help but think how bigger it was from inside.

by ten thirty every night you were tired.

not the kind that it disappeared after a good night’s sleep. it was the kind that’s had slowly become part of your routine, something you carried from university to work and from work back home again.

your university bag sat underneath the counter, half open, with a notebook sticking out of it. your laptop was beside the register, displaying an essay you'd been trying to finish for the past hour.

you had written four sentences.

you stared at the screen for another few seconds before sighing and closing your laptop. you weren’t going to get anything done tonight anyways.

you had classes all morning, spent your afternoon in the library, and now you were working until two in the morning.

it wasn’t your dream job, not even close but it paid, that was enough.

you didn't complain about it much. there wasn't really anyone to complain to, anyway. you were just trying to get through university without drowning in assignments and expenses.

the convenience store was quiet at night, which was probably the only reason you tolerated it. you liked the silence. the hum of the refrigerators. the occasional sound of a car passing outside. the little bell above the door whenever someone walked in.

you could study when there were no customers, and sometimes, if you were lucky, the hours passed quickly.

you reached for your coffee and took a sip. it was cold, you grimaced, “disgusting” you threw it away and decided you could survive without it.

the bell above the door rang.

you looked up immediately.

a guy walked in, dressed casually in a dark hoodie and jeans, his hands tucked into his pockets. he had soft, slightly tousled dark hair that fell naturally around his forehead and a face that somehow looked both youthful and sharp at the same time

“welcome” you said. he’s been coming lately a lot, probably for a midnight snack or something. he was basically a regular but you didn’t know his name.

he had been coming in for a few weeks now, always around the same time. usually alone. usually quiet.

he gave you the same smile like he always did.

you smiled back before returning your attention to the shelves you were restocking.

he wandered around for a while. you didn’t think much of it, customers did that all the time.

after a while, he came to the counter with a bottle of water.

you scanned it. “is that all?”

he nodded “yeah”

he paid and left with the same smile in his face.

the next night, he came again. and the night after that and again two days later. sometimes he bought water, others a chocolate bar.

once he bought a pack of gum and spent almost ten minutes walking around the store beforehand, as if he'd forgotten what he'd come in for.

you started recognizing him, not intentionally. you recognized the way the door was opening, slightly hesitant but still opening, you recognized his footsteps approaching the counter.

you recognized his little smile. you even knew which chocolate he usually bought. you told yourself it was because you worked there. remembering regular costumers was part of the job.

nothing more.

one night, when he walked in, you looked at the clock. 11:18.

right on time.

he noticed you looking and he gave you a smile before saying hi. you said hi back. he walked towards the drinks, you watched him for a while before catching yourself.

you looked away. ‘get a grip’ you said in yourself before sighing and going back to whatever essay you had going on.

five minutes later he came to the counter, the same chocolate bar in his hand.

you smiled. “you really like those” you said while scanning it. he looked at you then at the chocolate bar and laughed. “i guess”

“you buy one almost every time.”

he looked surprised. “you remember?” he said with a glow in his eyes.

you shrugged. “i work here”

“right” he said, embarrassed scratching the back of his neck.

he smiled down at the counter. there was that awkward silence again. then he looked at you.

"Are you always working this late?" he asked breaking the silence.

you looked at the clock, then back at him. “most nights”

“that’s a lot”. you nodded.

“you study too?” he said looking at the notebook next to the counter. you nodded again.

“what do you study?”

you told him, and he nodded, actually seeming interested.

“do you like it?”

you hesitated for a second.

“yeah. I do.”

it wasn't exactly a lie. you liked what you were studying. you just weren't sure you liked everything that came with it.

the lack of sleep. the assignments. trying to balance classes with work. geeling like you were always behind on something.

“what about you?” you asked. “are you in university too?”

“yeah.”

“what do you study?”

he told you, and you nodded.

“oh, that actually sounds interesting.”

“sometimes,” he said with a small laugh. “other times I wonder why I chose it.”

you laughed.

“same.”

and somehow, that made the conversation easier.

you talked for a few more minutes about classes, professors you couldn't stand, and how neither of you understood why university cafeterias managed to make everything taste the same.

it wasn't anything important.

just an ordinary conversation.

but you found yourself enjoying it.

but when he left, you realized you'd been smiling. you shook your head and went back to your essay.

the next few weeks continued like that. he came in, you talked. sometimes for two minutes, sometimes for ten.

sometimes he would walk toward the counter looking like he had prepared something to say, only to completely forget it when he got there.

you found it strangely cute.

one night, he walked immediately saying “hi”

you said it back. he looked like he was about to present an essay, anxious, contemplating about it.

“i wanted to ask you something” he said.

you looked up from your laptop. “okay”

he froze.

you waited.

he looked at you, then glanced around the store like the answer might somehow be written on one of the shelves.

when he looked back at you, he let a quiet laugh.

“i… forgot” you couldn’t help but laugh.

he immediately covered his face with one hand, embarrassed. his ears turning red. “i’m serious”

“i can tell” you said

he laughed again shaking his head.

“sorry”

“it’s fine”

he quickly turned toward the refrigerators, probably relieved to have an excuse to look away.

a minute later he came back with a drink and placed it on the counter.

you were still smiling.

“what?” he asked.

“nothing”

he narrowed his eyes at you playfully.

“you are laughing at me”

“maybe”

he smiled and looked down at the drink in his hands.

“fine. ill ask you tomorrow.”

you raised an eyebrow.

“tomorrow?”

“yeah.”

“you're coming back tomorrow?”

he looked up at you, almost like he hadn't meant to say it so obviously.

then he smiled.

“If you're working.” you nodded.

“i am” you said with a smile.

“then i’ll come tomorrow”

and suddenly you were looking forward to come to work.

the following night, when the door opened at 11:16, you looked up immediately. there he was.

he lifted his hand in a small wave.

you smiled.

hey.”

“hey.”

he walked up to the counter, slowing down a little as he got closer. for a second, he just stood there, looking at you and then everywhere else.

then he nodded to himself.

“okay.”

you looked at him, confused.

“okay?”

“i remembered.”

you smiled.

“oh. finally.”

he laughed quietly, looking down for a second before putting his hands into the pockets of his hoodie.

“i was going to ask you something.”

“go ahead.”

he glanced at you, then away again. you could tell he was nervous by the way he kept shifting his weight from one foot to the other.

“i was wondering...” he started, pausing for a moment. “if you wanted to get something to eat after work.”

you blinked.

“after work?”

he nodded, his eyes briefly meeting yours before dropping to the counter.

“yeah.”

you glanced at the clock.

two hours until your shift ended.

“that's pretty late.”

“i know.”

he gave you a small, nervous smile.

“we could just get something quick. if you want.”

you looked at him for a moment.

he was trying so hard to act casual about it, but the slight smile on his face and the way he wouldn't quite hold your gaze gave him away.

you couldn't help but smile.

“are you asking me out?”

he let out a quiet laugh, looking down.

“i guess i am.”

“you guess?”

“i'm trying not to make it awkward.”

“you're doing a pretty good job.”

he laughed again, finally looking back at you.

“so... is that a yes?”

“are you asking me out?"

his ears turned slightly pink.

"i..."

he laughed nervously.

"yeah."

you leaned against the counter.

"you could've just asked."

"i was trying."

"you've been trying for weeks."

"i know."

that made you laugh.

he looked relieved to finally have said it.

you glanced toward the clock again.

then at him.

you had an early lecture tomorrow. you had an unfinished assignment. you were exhausted.

your life was busy and messy and nowhere near the version of university you'd imagined when you'd first started. but maybe that didn't mean you couldn't have something nice in the middle of it.

"okay."

his eyes widened.

"okay?"

"yeah."

his smile was immediate.

“really?”

you smiled and nodded.

“really.”

he looked at you for a second, like he was making sure you actually meant it.

“after your shift?”

“after my shift.”

his shoulders relaxed, and a small smile spread across his face.

“then i'll wait.”

you laughed softly.

“you don't have to.”

“i know.”

he looked down for a moment, then back at you.

“i want to.”

you tried to hide your smile, but there wasn't much point. you failed.

the rest of your shift went by surprisingly fast.

for once, you weren't constantly checking the clock or counting down the minutes until you could leave. even your assignments didn't seem quite as overwhelming as they had earlier.

when two finally came around, you finished closing everything up, grabbed your bag from underneath the counter, and stepped outside.

the store was quiet behind you.

and there he was.

leaning against the wall near the entrance, hands tucked into the pockets of his hoodie.

the moment he saw you, he straightened up and smiled.

“took you long enough.”

you laughed.

“you waited two minutes.”

“i know.”

“and you're complaining?”

he shrugged, trying to look serious, but the smile on his face gave him away.

“maybe.”

you shook your head, smiling as you started walking.

he fell into step beside you.

the streets were almost empty at this hour, the occasional car passing by as you made your way down the road.

for once, you weren't thinking about your assignments.

you weren't thinking about your next shift, your early lecture tomorrow, or how little sleep you were going to get.

you were just walking beside him.

talking about random things.

laughing quietly at jokes that probably wouldn't be funny in the morning.

and somewhere along the way, you realized something.

you still didn't love your job.

you still hated waking up early for university, and you still had an essay waiting for you when you got home.

none of that had changed.

but lately, there was one thing you actually looked forward to when you went to work.

him.

the bass was already shaking the windows when you stepped through chris's front door.

you immediately regretted coming.

not because of the music. not because of the people. not even because chris's house looked like it had been completely taken over by strangers.

you regretted coming because you already knew who was here.

“come on,” chloe said, grabbing your wrist and pulling you further inside. “stop looking like you're attending a funeral.”

“i still don't understand why i had to come,” you said, looking around the crowded house with an unimpressed expression.

chloe laughed. “because I asked you to.” you rolled your eyes “that isn't a good enough reason.” you said. “it is when I'm your best friend.” chloe replied. you gave her a look.

before you could say anything else, her eyes moved toward the kitchen.

you followed her gaze and immediately spotted chris.

he was leaning against the wall close to the couch talking to han. the moment he noticed chloe, his face brightened.

you looked at her.

“go.” you said

she looked back at you.

“what?” she replied confused

“you've been staring at him for the past ten seconds.”

“i have not.”

you raised your eyebrows.

she rolled her eyes, but the smile on her face gave her away.

“fine.” she said finally giving up

she walked toward chris.

you watched her for a moment before deciding to find somewhere less crowded.

you made your way toward the kitchen instead.

you grabbed a drink and found an empty spot against the counter.

“hey” you looked up, it was felix. he stood beside you with a smile.

felix was probably the only one from the friend group that wasn't annoying. he didn't constantly try to impress people and most importantly, he didn't act like the entire world revolved around him.

“you actually came” felix said.

“unfortunately” you replied taking a sip of your drink.

felix laughed at your comment. “i knew you’d say something like that”. you smiled

“where is chloe?” he asked. “chris stole her” you said pointing at the couch. felix looked where your finger was pointing watching chloe and chris laughing.

for a few minutes you stood there talking about the party, nothing really important. felix was easy enough to talk to, and you didn't have to force the conversation.

the party got busier as the night went on.

you talked with chloe whenever she wasn't with chris, and every once in a while felix came over to say something.

eventually, you found yourself laughing at something he said. “you're lying,” you said, shaking your head. “i'm not.” he said. “that’s ridiculous” you said and felix smiled.

across the room, hyunjin glanced over.

he'd been talking with han, but his attention shifted when he heard you laugh.

his eyes moved toward you.

felix was standing beside you. you were smiling. hyunjin watched for a moment how comfortable you were, how much you were showing of your true self and he couldn’t help but wish he was felix for just a moment.

han nudged him getting him out of his thoughts.

“are you listening?” he asked. “yeah” hyunjin replied bluntly looking at han.

han raised an eyebrow. “no you weren’t”. “i was”. han rolled his eyes and kept talking.

a little while later, chloe appeared beside you.

“there you are!” she said excited. you turned around. “finally” you said with a smile. she laughed and linked her arms through yours.

“come on i need to tell you something” chloe said basically dragging you toward the other side of the room. you glanced back at felix

“i’ll see you later” you said before leaving.

“definitely” he replied back with a smile.

“i swear to god if it about chris” you said while walking with chloe through all these people. “it is” she replied back.

“then no” you said slowing your pace. “you haven’t even heard me yet” chloe said.

“i don’t need to” you replied

“i’m joking it’s not about chris” she said when you finally found a not so loud place. “then what is it?” you asked confused

chloe started to lower her voice “so what’s going on with you and felix?”

you looked at her confused. “what?”

“don’t act innocent” she replied with a smirk on her face

“there’s nothing going on” you replied bluntly. “you were laughing with him for like 10 minutes” she said.

“you are a stalker” you said crossing your arms.

“not the point” chloe said “i was laughing because he’s funny. that’s. all.” you said with a pause in the lasts words to make your point.

chloe stared at you. “you hate everyone in that friend group dude”

“i don’t hate everyone”

“you hate hyunjin”

“that’s different”

“how?” chloe said and you sighed.

“he’s annoying” you said and chloe laughed.

“you’re impossible” you rolled your eyes.

and from across the room hyunjin’s jaw tightened.

the night continued.

you and chloe spent most of it together, dancing badly, making fun of people, and occasionally disappearing into quieter rooms just to escape the noise.

felix came over every now and then, usually making some stupid comment that made you laugh.

and every single time, you noticed hyunjin looking.

at first, you ignored it. then it became annoying. when finally, you caught him staring, you raised an eyebrow but he didn't look away.

instead, he tilted his head slightly smirking. you rolled your eyes and turned back to felix. that made him feel some type of satisfaction inside, like after all at the end your attention was on him and no one else.

you accused yourself and went to the kitchen to get another drink. the music was quieter there, and for the first time all night you could actually hear yourself think.

you leaned against the counter taking a sip of your drink.

“having fun?”

you immediately recognised the voice.

you looked up. hyunjin stood in the doorway.

“surprisingly” you replied back looking at your drink.

he walked closer.

“with felix?” he asked.

you stared at him. “what?”

“you seem to be enjoying yourself” he said emotionless.

“i am”

“good” you narrowed your eyes.

“why do you care?” you asked. he shrugged.

“i don’t”

“then why are you asking?” you said looking at him. he didn’t answer.

instead, he stepped closer to the counter.

“you really like him?” he asked. his tall slim figure basically towering over you.

you laughed in disbelief. “are you serious?” you asked now getting annoyed.

“just asking” he said. his face was saying that he didn’t care, but his words didn’t say likewise.

“there's nothing going on between me and felix,” you said, raising an eyebrow at him.

“i didn't say there was,” he replied, looking back at you.

“you didn't have to.”

he rolled his eyes and leaned against the counter beside you.

“you're always so defensive.”

“and you're always so full of yourself.”

a small smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. “there she is.” he said.

you frowned, looking at him like he'd just said something ridiculous. “what’s that supposed to mean?”

“nothing,” he said with a shrug, although he was still smiling.

you shook your head and took another sip of your drink.

you glanced toward the living room when you heard chloe laughing loudly over the music.

“i'm gonna go find chloe.”

hyunjin nodded.

“okay.”

you pushed yourself away from the counter and started toward the doorway.

“wait” he said. you turned around confused. “what?” you asked.

he hesitated for a second before shaking his head.

“nothing.”

you frown. “you are weird” you said and he just chuckled.

you sat beside chloe, trying to focus on whatever she was telling you.

“and then he literally said—”

“wait,” you interrupted, laughing. “chloe, you're actually making that up.”

“i'm not!”

she grabbed your arm, looking offended. “ask chris.”

you looked over at him.

“chris?”

chris glanced at the two of you from across the couch. “what?”.

“did you really say that?” he looked at chloe, then back at you.

“absolutely not.” you immediately burst out laughing.

you leaned back at the couch still laughing. for the next few minutes, you forgot about everything else, you were comfortable having fun with your friend.

until you felt someone looking at you.

you glanced across the room and it was hyunjin. he was standing with minho holding a drink in one hand.

the minute your eyes met, he looked away. you frowned, it was unusual for hyunjin not to hold eye contact, while smirking. now he was looking hesitant and unsure.

“i’m going to the bathroom” you said to chloe and she nodded.

you got upstairs,struggling a little with how many people there were.

you got inside and closed the door. you looked at yourself and sighed, your hair was a little messy. you tried to make your hair as presentable as you could with your fingers brushing through them.

until you heard a knock.

“occupied” you yelled but at how the door moved you could tell they didn’t hear.

“i said occupied” you were walking towards the door and a tall figure towered over you.

hyunjin.

“i know” he said with a smirk before getting in and closing the door behind him.

“what is wrong with you, what if i was peeing or something?” you said annoyed.

“i was waiting long enough before knocking” he said looking down at you.

you could say that his tall figure was intimidating, sure he was handsome tall you couldn’t disagree a perfect looking guy but personality wise he sucked (or that’s what he wants you to think), always so self-centred cocky and arrogant.

he noticed that you were a bit intimidated by him and smirked even more, if that’s even possible.

“what do you want” you asked focusing again to yourself in the mirror fixing your makeup

“nothing”

“then why are you here?”

he shrugged again “i saw you come upstairs”

you looked at him through the mirror

“and?”

“and i followed you”

you turned around slowly “you followed me?”

“don’t make it sound creepy”

“you’re making it sound creepy as if it isn’t already”

he laughed. “fair”

you turned back in the mirror, fixing a strand of your hair.

“you can go now” you said sounding cocky

“you came here just to fix your hair” he asked

“yes, you know some people actually care how they look like, unlike you” you said still fixing your hair

“you looked fine downstairs” he spoke up. admiring how your hair fell on your face, your make up somehow after all this time still looking good. how the clothes you were wearing hugged you just right.

you paused for a second before looking at him through the mirror. “was that a compliment?”

“maybe”

“i don’t believe you”

“why not?” he frowned.

“because you usually have something annoyed to say”

he smiled, watching you through the reflection.

“maybe i'm trying something new.”

you turned around, leaning back against the counter.

“and what's that?”

“being nice.”

you stared at him for a moment before laughing.

“you're terrible at it.”

he laughed too, dropping his head for a second.

“you do it then” he said walking closer to you.

“what?” you said taken aback.

“be nice to me” he said

you stared at him genuinely confused by the switch up “what do you mean?”

he stop a few steps away, a faint smile playing on his lips.

“you keep telling me i’m terrible at being nice. so show me how it’s done”

you let out a quiet laugh, shaking your head. “that’s not how it works” you said.

“why not?”

“because you are the one who is supposed to be nice” you said looking at him “and what you are the expert?”. you crossed your arms giving him an unimpressed look. “obviously.”

he smiled.

“okay then. i’m listening” you rolled your eyes.

“you’re insufferable” you scoffed.

“i don’t think that’s very nice” you rolled your eyes, but. the smile tugging at your lips gave you away.

“fine” you said looking at him for a moment. “what to you want me to say?”

he shrugged pretending to think about it.

“start with something you actually like about me”

you immediately laughed. “that’s going to be difficult”

“take your time” you sighed

“you are really going to make me do this?” he laughed.

“you said you were better at being nice” you rolled your eyes

“ugh fine you are…” you said looking at him trying to think of something.

he laughed looking at you struggle. “i’m what?”

“less annoying than usual tonight” you said finally.

he laughed. “i’ll take it” “don’t” “too late”

you smiled despite yourself, and when you looked back at him, you realized he'd moved a little closer again.

see?” he said softly. “you're getting better already.”

you narrowed your eyes.

“don't push it.”

“wouldn't dream of it.”

but the way he smiled told you he was absolutely going to.

he looked at you and scoffed. “what?” you asked confused
