TW: pseudo-incest
Eren and Mikasa grow up under the same roof after he took her to his home and wrapped his scarf around her. In a Paradis enclosed by the walls but without titans, how would they handle their attraction to each other once puberty hits if they're seen as siblings by everyone in Shiganshina?
Grisha Jaeger takes his son, Eren, to a medical visit at the mountains outside Wall Maria to meet Mikasa, a little girl his age hoping they'll become friends. But instead, they find the terrible scene of a crime, Mikasa's parents are laying lifeless on a pool of their own blood, but their daughter is nowhere to be found. His father goes to fetch the military police and asks him to please stay safe where he is; but in a terrible impulsive outburst, Eren decides to save Mikasa on his own. When they come out of that terrible and violent event, Grisha and Eren take the now orphan Mikasa to live with them and his mother Carla in Shiganshina. Giving her the chance to have a home and a new family, not to replace the one she'd lost that day, but to never let her feel alone in their world.
And that's how they become family.
Years pass and there is no titan breaking through Wall Maria and tragically changing their destinies for the worst. Now, they live their lives as peacefully as they can, going to school every day with their only friend Armin, and spending their free time going outside the wall to take naps under that old tree on top of the hill, or going to the riverside of the Rhine river, to spend their days inside an old abandoned cabin that once belonged to a solitary soldier which their name they don't know of.
They are family now. That's how everyone in town sees them, gone are the days when their nosy neighbors used to visit the Jaegers at random hours just to meet the new addition to the family, a cute little girl who looked like the moon, with pale skin, dark hair and the strangest but most captivating sad eyes they've ever seen.
Carla and Grisha are happy and proud of themselves for making Mikasa feel like a loving member of their family. And everyone in town, including Armin, knows that they are a family. Eren used to be proud of himself for that. He did that, he gave her a home and kept her warm when she most needed it, he became her family when she had lost hers.
So why does he get so agitated everytime someone addresses the two of them as siblings? Aren't they just that? If the four of them are a family now, aren't they supposed to be siblings too, just like his mother introduces them when they meet someone new?
But if they're supposed to be siblings, why does it feel so wrong? Why can't he see her as his sister and move on? Why does she have to be so beautiful and perfect, everything he's ever known as the concept of love if she's supposed to just be his sister?
And now, he has to deal with this alone, because to act on his feelings for her seems to be forbidden.
