Experiences start with great content. We’re are extra busy this September developing new fun stuffs for Lully Selb while in the midst of launching a new look for our website. Constantly thinking of new ideas and getting inspirations. Last Tuesday morning was brilliant! I attended Adobe’s MAKE IT local premier creative event of the year which started early August in Sydney. Adobe evangelists shared about latest updates Creative Clouds which helps fellow creatives to have a better workflow when designing webs and apps, exploring possibilities with new video tools and creating better imageries in Photoshop and Lightroom.
The main highlight got to be when Paul Burnett, Principal Evangelist for Creative Cloud in APAC gave an insight on the Future of Design. He shared about new technologies that could help designers create better works! Like stretching pictures on Photoshop intelligently without making it look distorted. My favorite example- imagine creating a 3D prototype from scratch just by drawing with crayons! It was insanely cool and I really hope they would launch it! Here’s a short snippet that I took.Â
If you missed the event, here’s all the sessions you can watch at the comfort of your own home. Here are some of my favorites. The videos are about an hour long each..do watch it when you have the time!
Hello everyone, as per requests by my Favourite girls of our lullyselbsquad, I've made a tutorial on how you can transform Lully Selb shawl into vest. I actually discovered this style some time back but ever since I got pregnant, this shawl turned vest covers my baby bump nicely. I can still wear my normal long sleeved Tshirt and this DIY vest covers all the right spots ( belly, boobs, butt ) hahah, the 3 Bs. Anyway ladies, I'm 33 weeks getting all heavy, pls don't forget me in your prayers.
Enjoy the short easy steps to turn all ur shawls into vests! There are 2 ways of wearing it just by tying a knot. Multiply your wardrobe pieces for free. Yay!!Â
Easy peasy right ? Here's some photos to recap.
Look 1 - Vest length is shorter, knot is behind ur neck.
Look 2 - Long drapey vest. Knot is around your lower hip/butt area. Covers your thighs too!Â
Have fun trying it out and tag us your photos #lullyselbsquad!
Happy Teacher's Day to fellow educators out there! For the first time today, pre-school teachers get a day off too!
It's been almost 8 years teaching art freelance. Through these years I had the opportunity to share my knowledge and make art with people of all ages- in studios, classrooms and house calls too. It can get mentally exhausting doing lesson plans, teaching itself. Nonetheless I have no regrets. Being a creative person myself, making art with children especially has broaden my perspective. I am intrigued at how effortless and fearless they can be. A few years ago I went through a creative rut. I just couldn't paint at all. I didn't know what to paint. That was quite worrying for a practising artist. Thankfully I got over it. It's these kids who inspired me to pick up my brush again. There's just something about their quirks and charming character that is portrayed in their art- the colours they chose, their brush strokes and attention to details. Here's a selection of artworks done by my students.
In the light of celebrating Teachers’ Day, go browse through our sales item! Promo code- 50off
It's been a while since I did a styling blog and this one is pretty challenging coz trying to look good with a pregnant belly ain't so easy. Wonder how do those hot mommies do it on Instagram, with perfect ootds and so effortless!
In this Selb Series, I played around with all of our existing collections and kinda mixed them all up together with my own wardrobe staples. (Which many of you have too, real basics).
So this first look is featuring black row pants (left) and black row jacket (right ) inspired by our trip to Doha; lovely geometric motifs captured from the museum we visited.
Glam up this pants with a pair of hot pink heels and structured top or chill down with comfy white sneakers. Â The black row jacket can be paired with the black row pants too as a set, matching motifs! Lastly for a festive look, I've paired the printed skirt from our latest Eid collection with this jacket and a turban style for and edgy look.Â
Top: My own wardrobe
Bottom: Black row pantsÂ
Shawl: Graphic shawlÂ
Heels: PedroÂ
Top: Black row jacketÂ
Bottom: Black row pantsÂ
Shawl: Black Marble ShawlÂ
Shoes: Hush Puppies
Top: Black row jacketÂ
Bottom: White Pink Printed SkirtÂ
Shawl: White Pink shawlÂ
In these next looks, I matched the white dots jacket with the black row pants and added some nude brown tones (shawl and shoes) to this monochrome outfit. Rather than going all nude, I like to keep the look strong and stay faithful with black and white. Of course, for a sharper look I've paired the jacket with our straight cut geometry pants and a pair of black heels. You can even zip it up for a clean look. Off you go for your meeting!
Top: White Dots JacketÂ
Bottom: Black row pantsÂ
Shawl: Taupe Graphic shawl ( only for subscribers, email me if you are keen )
Shoes: (Forgot the brand, oops!)
Top: White Dots JacketÂ
Bottom : Geometric PantsÂ
Shawl : Black Corals shawlÂ
Shoes : Pedro
If you have a statement piece like this top I'm wearing below, the geometry pants adds another dimension to the look instead of boring black or white pants. I've also matched my all time graphic shawl to match the bottom. This look is so chic - can't wait to wear it once I give birth, cos now I'm cheating without zipping the back fully!!Â
Top: My own wardrobe
Bottom : Geometric pants Â
Shawl : Graphic shawl Â
Shoes : Pedro
Last 2 looks feature the tunic zipper top that comes in a really sweet shade of pink. I have to admit it's not so me, but it's so comfortable that it's on my repeat mode. If you think this is too pinky for you, throw in your basic black bottoms or denim and its goodbye to that cliche girly look!Â
Top: Knee length tunic top Â
Bottom : Geometric pants
Shawl : Pink corals shawlÂ
Shoes : Hush puppies
Top: Knee length tunic topÂ
Bottom : My own wardrobe
Shawl : Blue strokes shawlÂ
Shoes : Nelissa HilmanÂ
I like to keep the styling practical, easy and fuss free. Forget the fancy pieces just for the sake of ootd, cos keeping things real is good. Plus our prints are already a statement  work of art, there is no need to over think when getting ready.
Pssss.... all of these pieces are on sale!! There is further discount for current sale items too! Go check it, link right here! Remember to type promo code 50off at check out!

#lullyslist| LS experience workshop: Unique Singapore
Last Saturday was a day well spent. We had our long-awaited second workshop during National Day week. Before the workshop started, all of us enjoyed the famous Nasi Lemak from Eunos market; known for its mouth-watering coconut rice, great sambal and simple side dishes options such as egg, fried fish or chicken. I feel like having it again tomorrow!
Every print that we produced has its own unique process and this time we are exploring different techniques. This workshop was extra special with its patriotic theme. Since we rarely do any figurative or illustrative designs for our shawls, it felt fresh to include our local food, icons and places of attraction. But how would one start?  When attempting illustrative designs, we wanted to have a loose and fluid touch to it. Thus we decided to explore drawing with chinese ink and stick. Just like the artist’s Paul Klee quote,’Drawing is like taking the line for a walk.’ If you look at the pictures below, you can see the participants imagining their day out walking around Singapore and making a pit stop to eat Curry Chicken Epok Epok too!
Here are the lovely works by our participants! Look forward to our Singapore Shawl soon!
Happy Birthday Singapore ! Its the only time of the year that I am slightly more patriotic. To tell you the truth, I love Singapore but there are times I wished I was born in another country. Growing up and not fitting into the mainstream system was rather frustrating and being a minority also didn't help. Having said that, am still a proud Singaporean and especially when I have guests from overseas, I'm always excited to show them our hidden local charms. In today's Selbs' Series, I wanna share with you my top 5 must do/try in Singapore!
1) Food glorious food !
They say Singapore is like food paradise. Well I don't quite agree coz I have a more "ang moh" tastebud. But yes for tourists from the other side of the globe, they must try our local food. My favorite would be to bring them to Zam Zam, at Arab Street. A good cup of teh tarik, a huge piece of murtabak and a generous plate of mee goreng! YUMM.
2) Morning walk to see Shophouses at Joo Chiat
Forget our pretty skyline at Marina Bay Sands or Sentosa. I would take my guests for a walk down Joo Chiat area to see the gorgeous shop houses. As our peranakan community is still active in conserving their heritage, we can still witness their rich culture through their homes; beautifully designed tiles, windows, gates and furnitures. Check out this site for more on shophouses. http://www.nathalie-laoue.com/index.html
3) Picnic at East Coast Park
Though we don't have exotic beaches like Malaysia or Indonesia, Singapore is still an island and I believe everyone should experience the local way of picnic and cycling. To make the experience even more local, I would bring some local delights instead of your cupcakes and western salad. And if you're too lazy to organise a picnic, you can always take your guest to the food centre where there is a variety of local food; satay, seafood, chicken rice etc.Â
Kueh Compendium by Lee Xin Li
5) A little handmade gift
Last but not least a unique handmade gift will be more meaningful than keychains or chocolates. I've always wanted to get one of these awesome batik rolls. but they are forever fully booked. Be sure to chope yours early to avoid disappointment.Â
Dont you think that our country is quite charming if you look close enough? While writing this blog, I'm also excited for this Saturday's LS Experience Workshop. It's gonna be all Singapore stuff as our next series of shawls are inspired by our personal story about our homeland. We have 3 seats left for the workshop. Click here to find out more.Â
My favorite Japanese artist’s works is in town! I was so thrilled when National Gallery Singapore posted about the exhibition many months back. Due to the overwhelming amount of visitors, I decided to go on a Monday morning with my nephew. Just a day before my birthday!
Everything on display makes Instagram worthy pictures. Apart from the 20 seconds only special Infinity Room, my eyes were shooting hearts when I entered a room full of her paintings. Obsessed! I can never explain enough about her practice. Scroll down below to watch  great video by Tate on her artistic obsession.
These picture doesn’t do justice! You have to go and experience it yourself! Exhibition runs through 3rd December.
As some of you might have known, somedays I make art with kids at Seedz Studio. Adults can attend toooo! We made Yayoi Kusama inspired artwoks!
Patterns crazy. Can you spot the image of Super Trees, one of Singapore’s places of attractions covered in dots?!
Since National Day is coming, Selb and I decided to hold a workshop on 12 August for 15 pax only. Join us and get inspired as we go through the process of creating our very own Singapore Shawl. More details of the workshop here.
Our birthday month is coming to an end so in today's Selb's Series, I'm gonna be sharing some of my super simple hijab tutorial suitable for these nude shawls. It's been a while since I've blogged on Selb’s Series and I think many of you know by now that I'm expecting=) It’s been really rough especially the first trimester and it was the same time as shifting to our new place. Been wanting to share with you all my new little home but we took a while to fully do up the house. It was a yucky period of time, having to pack and unpack and being all nausea. Thank god its all over and I'm almost back to my normal self, Alhamdulillah! So here's a little sneak peak of my inspiration. We wanted something minimal, clean with a touch of our personal style. Lucky we have Pinterest and qanvast, though after months settling down here, its quite difficult to get that "Pinterest" kinda home!
We fell in love with the nude shades, grey tones and the slight tinch of copper and navy blue. Having an idea and inspiration is one, but to follow through it was not as easy. Â Especially when you cannot find the exact shade of colour or that particular type of cushion cover. For me, the initial part of the renovation and the bigger picture was more manageable. When it came down to the small details like what to display on the planks, table tops, the type of vases, runner etc. Even finding nice photos for my frames were not easy. Managed to get some from etsy and the rest were my own traveling photos. I'm still not 100% happy with my home but my hubby thinks I'm being too overly obsessed! Here's some parts of the home, will share more when I'm truly satisfied!
As you can see, some parts didn't turn out exactly as how I've envisioned my home to be. Really digging the nude tones and I wished our local furniture and home deco kinda shops provide tasteful well designed products in the right shade of colour. And so, *hint hint* we're gonna have a range of gorgeous nude printed shawls coming your way for our birthday month specials! Cant wait to show them to you guys!
Meanwhile, don't forget to tag us #lullyselbsquad this weekend when you jalan raya!

It’s been awhile since we blogged. Selb and I were so busy preparing Eid Collection that we forgot about our anniversary! Lully Selb turned 2 on 3rd May!! Join our contest to win a suit from our collection here. Our recent big event was Singapore Modest Fashion Weekend organized by ROSEVALLEY. The same team who made Celeb Fest 2016 the trendiest bazaar here.
Our Eid Collection; Momento were inspired by a group exhibition Forgotten Memories. Selb and I, along with a few designer and artist friends formed a collective-BE. We exhibited Forgotten Memories to create awareness and raise funds for people with Dementia. (We’ll have another blog post on that.)
Selb and I decided to use my paintings for this collection. We have two strong looks- white based and black based which represents the good and fond memories in my paintings. The BTS pictures above were captured beautifully by Phoebe from House of Divonista. More photos in an album on Facebook. We were so excited that Celebrity Stylist Min Luna from Malaysia helped us backstage! She was awesome and fun to work with. Waiting backstage was just nerve-wrecking as I peeped outside to see full house for the show. In the blink of an eye the runway ended and we rushed to make way for the next designer. The most joy we had was when people came to our booth immediately after the show to chop their raya fix! We are so thankful. All the mad rush, difficult times were worth it. Which one is your favorite piece? Shop our collection on LULLYSELB.COM
Time flew by so fast and it’s already April. Feels like it was only yesterday when I met lovely girls during Makers Meet dinner at Asha&Co’s home studio! I was invited to share about my experiences on how I embraced creative rut and tips to climb out of it.
As you can see from the photos above, I jot down some pointers. On previous #lullyslist, I’ve mentioned a few times that one should never compare your work with other creatives. The only thing you should compare is your previous work. Look back to see if you made any progress.
On the same photo above, I crossed out ‘Love the process of doing your craft.’ It didn’t feel right to me! The greatest takeaway for the night was when one the girls Raudha Raily said, 'Trust the process.’
That reminded me of the challenging times when we were designing the Nautical collection. It took awhile but Alhamdulliah, Red Navy shawl is sold out!
The Makers Meet has been inspirational. It felt great to have a support system where we could share our struggles. The next Makers Meet is already full! I’m looking forward to the next one.
P/S : We are still taking orders for Nautical Striped Shirt! We can do bigger sizes this time..just email us!
#lullyslist | A chance to see how our Nautical Street prints were chosen
We're launching the full Nautical Street campaign together with a spanking new website early next week! As most of you would have already know, it took awhile to finase the prints for this collection. Now that everything is ready, let's take a look at some sketches, prints that didn't make it and the final prints used for Nautical Street!
The first 3 are prints that didn't make the cut. We thought a more softer blue could work.
These 2 are the final prints used! Can't beat Navy Blue and Red for Nautical vibes.
Red Navy Shawl
Black Nautical Shawl
We experimented with variations of how they stripes should go. Designing on our own means the options are endless and these are some of our sketches and ideas.
This thin lines wasn't bold enough.
We were so happy with this print! FYI, this is the full print used for our shirt!
And this one for the pants...
We worked really hard especially for this campaign as Nautical theme is a very classic one indeed. It's been around for long and it took us awhile to come out with a fresh take on it. We designed these specially for our LullySelbSquad yearning for a new print that is bold, unique and chic.
Before we even started on producing designs for nautical theme collection, we did some research and got even more inspired to work on this. So here's a little throwback on how nautical theme became popularised.
Did you know....
1) It was Queen Victoria who inspired the nautical trend in the 18th century. She had a child’s sailor uniform made on board the royal yacht for her son Albert Edward, Prince of Wales. People were very influenced back then, so everyone at the countryside wanted their child to dress in a sailor uniform.
2) From childrens' wear, the trend got picked up by womens' fashion. Sailor-inspired swimwear was seen in the late 18th century.
3) In 1917,  Coco Chanel opened her shop in the resort town of  Deauville on the coast of France where she made the nautical look go viral. Inspired by the classicly simple and comfortable shirts worn by the local fishermen and sailors, Coco Chanel’s  designs, with their nautical touches and jersey fabrics, revolutionized the way women dressed. Here, style-icon Audrey Hepburn seen in the classic striped tee.
4) 1960s brought nautical with a twist of Mod. I love this look, its really cute!
5) Fast forward to today, many designers made nautical so modern and chic. Silhouettes kept simple but playful lines and stripes! Major love, from Marc Jacobs, to Alaxender Mcqueen!
For our SS17 Nautical Street, we decided to forgo the cliche anchor and ships prints, sailor kinda look. We played with stripes, added a tinch of red and blue and made it ours. Its been a while since we created a strong, vibrant print like this. We hope these prints will add some variation to your wardrobe, and most importantly fun and colours to your #ootds! Now lets take a moment to thank Coco Chanel for making a fabulous kick start to stripes!
More style tips on next selbsseries, while I experiment on these new prints.
#lullyslist | Perfect place to get props for Nautical
The photoshoot is happening this Sunday! Selb and I went to recce outdoor areas for our shoot but the weather has been unpredictable these days so we decided to have it done in a studio. Thus, we would really need props for it. We were both thinking, where else can we get a buoy, ropes and complementary accessories?
It gotta be the Army's Market at beach rd! Here are the stash I came across...
Some colourful rope..
Manila Ropes- We could make do with this but it's either we buy it for 50m or 3m which is too short.
Got these  Paracord Bracelets for $6 each..
I spent the rest of our budget on this buoy. Perfect for our shoot! The seller was kind enough to let me rent this for a lower price.
Brought this buoy back home...
Look forward to our Behind The Scenes on our Insta Story this Sunday!

I have always loved diversity, and so this year as a muslim I celebrated my first Chinese New Year with my husband's family. His mom is chinese, ( dad is indian ) and because we all take halal food, his parents usually host the reunion dinner. I was all excited and dressed up making sure I'm all red and merry! When everyone arrived at my parents-in-law's place, to my surprise, they were dressed pretty casual. I was probably the "red-dest".
Since I now have experienced both cny and hari raya, I cant help but to make a comparison.
CNY VS HARI RAYA
1) Dresscode
CNY: Hardly anyone wears the traditional costume anymore. Only older folks or young kids would wear red and you can see some cheongsam/oriental influence. I even saw one girl walked in black baggy pants and white jersey! If there were no oranges at the houses I visited, I wouldn't know its CNY, REALLY..
Hari Raya: Most are still in traditional wear. Families would be colour coordinated. Ladies are nicely groomed, make up and lovely shoes. When a family walks by in the streets, you can tell its a festive mood.
And after wearing red on the reunion dinner and realising I ook like an hangboa, I decided to chill down and go easy on colours. So here are my 2 ootds. ( Lully Selb Shawls - duuh )
2) Food
CNY: Yummy crackers, juicy oranges. We were so blessed because all the houses we visited, served us great food. In fact, it felt like a wedding weekend. Some families catered in special halal bryani, naan and ayam sambal ( chicken with chilli ). For me, this is better than raya food, haha! Oh, and I love the lo-hey food!
Hari Raya: Lots of kueh ( traditional cookies ) and first day we usually have lontong and ketupat. After a month of fasting, we easily gain back the weight and fats just in the first few days of hari raya.
*For food, I have to say both festive are winners! Singaporeans and food, we cant separate yea.
3) House Decoration
CNY: Rather simple, low-key but very practical. They buy good wishing posters and hang on the walls. Somehow, the basket of orange and red jars of crackers add the CNY mood to the home.
Hari Raya: New curtains and cushion covers, some even get the walls painted with a new colour. Not very practical to do every year but I love seeing the effort and pride they take in. And nothing beats visiting a lovely, warm home.
The Verdict:
Overall I have to say that Hari Raya is way livelier than Chinese New Year. ( at least for me ). Â Maybe its in the culture, or maybe my side of family, the numbers are larger and they are louder and that probably adds to the atmosphere. I also have this sense that those celebrate CNY dont look forward to it as much as those who celebrate Hari Raya. Could be also, we fast for one whole month and so Hari Raya is extra special. I probably have to celebrate a few more years before I can make a proper judgement. One thing for sure, having children around makes it more fun, we played fire crackers, something I love since I was a child!
In the light of Chinese New Year, we speak to our #lullyselbsquad Katherine Yeung, a new muslimah who celebrates two festivities. Let's get to know more about her personal experiences.
 1) Tell us a bit about yourself, what do you do during the weekdays and weekends.
I have recently embarked on a mid-career switch to teaching and I'm currently taking my post-grad diploma in Education. Â Weekdays are spent attending classes and tackling assignments and group projects. On weekends, I put work aside to spend family and couple time with my husband, or catch up on Netflix and close friends.
2) We heard you've embraced Islam since you got married. How is it like celebrating both Hari Raya and Chinese New Year?
We love that we get to celebrate twice a year, and enjoy the goodies and festivities. In fact, I have a small family in Singapore, so the Hari Raya celebration is even more major than CNY! Family time is important for my husband and I, so we look really forward to them each year. At the heart of it, both celebrations bring families together to share good meals, long conversations and fun games.
3) What is your take on modest fashion/dressing ? Any style icons in the modest fashion that you like?
I admire hijabi sisters who seem to carry modest fashion so effortlessly (but I know it is far from effortless!). Recently, I've been going for the feminine minimalist look (think flowy sleeves or bottoms, as well as whites, nudes and blush colour palettes). There isn't a particular style icon I follow, but I do get addicted to surfing through Pinterest for Hijab outfits inspirations.
4) Any thoughts of wearing the hijab? Have you tried wrapping a shawl around your head ? How does it feel like?
Although I have not embraced wearing the hijab permanently, I do attend Quran classes once a week, so I do don the hijab when I'm there. There are also opportunities to wear one when I am at religious gatherings or attending talks at the mosque. At first, I feel conscious and constantly get distracted while wearing it. I'm thinking -- how does it look? Is it falling off? Did I pin it securely? Is my hair showing? People are staring at me. What are they thinking? The list goes on. However, the more I wear it, the more confident I am with it. I may not be wearing the hijab now but, Insh'Allah, one day.
5) What is your impression of Muslims then and now?
I've always had close Malay friends since I was in primary school, and they are such open and friendly people. I've had many opportunities to understand Islam even back when I was in school, so I've always had a good impression of Muslims. I have seen the beauty in the teachings of Islam, and it is truly sad that our religion has been cast in the bad light by the media.
6) Who's in your squad?
I love both Alicia Keys and Audrey Hepburn. They are classy, confident and elegant. They believe in the good of people and inspire others to be kind to others. To me, that's beautiful.
7) And what's the 1 thing you want to achieve this year?
Hoping to put my running shoes back on to achieve better health and fitness!
Thank you Katherine for the interview and sharing some insights on your personal journey. Team Lully Selb wishes you a very Happy Lunar New Year and a prosperous, healthy, successful year ahead.
