I wrote an essay about the ending of Good Omens, and you can read it now.
How I learned to love the finale of Good Omens for what it is (and maybe you can, too).
It got so long I had to find another home for it, but if you're feeling sad, confused, lonely or even ambiguous after the finale, maybe reading some hopeful analysis will ease the way.
I haven't written an essay in 12 years but this is what this show has done to me so here we are.
Watched it a few days ago. Took some time to sort out what I liked, what I disliked. Read a lot of comments, very interested in what people liked that I could have missed. Now, it feels like time to share my feelings about it, although it's probably nothing that hasn't been said already.
Here's what I want to ramble about:
Aziraphale and Crowley
Jesus
The Book of Life
God
The ending
The fix-it fanfic I would like to read
And maybe one or two more things.
My thoughts and spoilers below the cut!
(Those are only my thoughts, and a way for me to vent. It is in no way an absolute truth everyone should believe. And if you liked a part I did not, I'm very interested in hearing about why, and changing my mind! Like all of us, I wanted nothing more than to love the movie)
I find it funny how I really like the material of some parts of the movie, while disliking the execution of it, and then shift to the exact opposite: I find the end really well done, and strongly dislike what it tellsâŠ
The war in Heaven
I don't get that part?
Aziraphale, maybe (not the hair, though). He's always wanted to do good. This might be why he has so much trouble afterward reconciling what he thinks is good and what Heaven thinks is good, why he avoids fighting when he is a fighter. Although, I'd have thought it was Michael's job to lead the warâŠ
But, Crowley? What need did he have to attack Aziraphale, to explain his motives, at the risk of being killed by Heaven's best general? I can picture Aziraphale not wanting to kill one more angel when the war is over, but unless they already know each other very well at this point (and I don't think they do), I don't understand Crowley's actions.
Aziraphale and Crowley
It is rushed, to the point it almost makes no sense if we don't know what happened and if we are not willing to fill the gaps ourselves to make it work. But the scraps we are left with after trimming a 6 episodes show into a 90 minutes movie are brilliant material.
Crowley's desperation. Crowley's attachment to what remains of Aziraphale. Crowley's anger at Aziraphale's actions.
Aziraphale's motives for leaving. Aziraphale's unwillingness to confront Crowley (poor Angel knows he won't be well received). Aziraphale's need to be understood and forgiven by Crowley â sure, he needs his help, but now that he's made the first step, he wants more, doesn't he?
Aziraphale's desire to be a good role model Angel, that is just so -not- him!
The whole Aziraphale/Crowley interaction needed more space for feelings to develop, for apologies to reach deaf ears, to become real apologies instead of being pressed by more urgent matters. It could have been magnificent feelings, had it been allowed the time it needed for them to be shown.
Aziraphale winning the Bentley back
Now that part is brilliant! This is Aziraphale, being a real Bastard, just like Crowley (and us) love him! He totally destroys that gangster, by following the (somewhat twisted) rules! â€ïž
Also, it is absolutely bastardly to go behind someone's back to do what they have clearly stated they don't want you to do! Even when you're right!
Jesus
He's a nice, loving, naive young man.
He's not a nice, loving leader who has been put through terrible hardship and accepted it so that others could understand how far love goes.
He's not Jesus.
He is lovely, and it's perfectly normal that he is destabilized by the world as it is now (and very well shown too), and when he finds his footing he starts being credible, but why is he so lost in Heaven?
Also, he serves no purpose. The people he meets serve no purpose.
With more time, he could have served the plot as the first missing thing, and as being the one guy who counterbalances other humans selfishness. But with the very limited time, we have plenty of other things that disappear, he's just eating screen-time I feel would have been more productive allotted to Aziraphale and Crowley.
Loved the interaction with drunken-Crowley, and Crowley's "Oh, but that was him!" moment later, though! đ€Ł
The Book of Life and Michael
Sure, why not. And Michael's actions are credible too. She's always been bossy, she's always felt like the only one who did the job right. She decides to use the Book of Life to make things right (she's wrong in her assumption, but everyone makes mistakes, and as says Crowley, "the road to Hell needs repaving") and tearing it apart makes her mad. Why not. Too bad there's only time for it to be explained, and not shown, like so much else.
Crowley's outfit in Heaven
It comes out of nowhere, of course, no time to show it, again.
But this is going to be very very good material for fanfictions. After all, the outfit is great, very tight, and Crowley's out of miraclesâŠ
Flying Bentley to the center of the universe
No.
This is for show, which is something I dislike, and it doesn't make sense, so it's bad.
Why the center of the universe? Ok, why not. That is not a good answer, but it is acceptable.
But how can the Bentley go there? It barely survived a ring of hellfire in season 1! And it's not Aziraphale miracling it, since he asks Crowley about it. Except, it can't be Crowley either. So?
Just feels like a nice-looking scene with no real narrative behind. I'll take a nice-plotted scene with no or crappy special effects over it any day.
God
This is where the movie shifts. We now have plenty of time to show very well done things that I disliked đą
God, in season 1, is a joker with a Great (bad) Plan and maybe an Ineffable (good) Plan. She has a sense of humor. She's all-knowing by definition, but lets small lies slide. She's not upset by the world continuing beyond the end. Maybe at this point she's unconcerned, maybe she liked it. All in all, I liked her.
God, in what I remember of the Bible, starts out as a tyrant with a beloved people who better do what He says or else⊠Through the course of 4000 years, He becomes kinder. He gives us His son to save us. I haven't read the Apocalypse, but I believe that even though that part is about the end of the world, it also says that the true believers will be saved and forever happy. Not destroyed. Although of course, fiction is allowed to change the rule to build an interesting story đ
God, in season 3, is bored with the story to the point that she wants it to end. No consideration for angels, demons, humans, creatures big and small and living. She's bored with her toy so She ditches it. I don't like her.
I want the trickster of season 1 back, the one who planted dinosaurs on Earth to make fun of paleontologists.
I even want the cruel one from season 2, who made a bet with Satan to see how Job would react to loosing it all. That's good tragedy.
I don't want that selfish creature that cares about nothing and no one. Kind of her to give Crowley a last wish, but as the 9th Doctor said to Margaret: "you let one go, on a whim, and that's how you live with yourself" [quote in disorder, but in essence, that's what he meant].
The ending: Asa and Anthony
This is a beautiful love-at-first-sight and lived-happily-ever-after story. I like the quiet love between them. It is slow paced, very well made.
But it is not Aziraphale and Crowley, so what's the point? Even if we theorize that they find each other many times throughout history, that is not Aziraphale and Crowley. After all, another Doctor Who quote: "A man is the sum of his memories" (5th Doctor). And they don't remember.
The (lack of?) kiss
As far as I'm concerned, Aziraphale kissing his fingers, touching them to Crowley's lips, and Crowley kissing them back, is a kiss. It is so much more than a kiss. It is everything they wanted to be, in a tender, intimate, discreet packaging meant for no one else but them. So, so much more than a Hollywood kissâą.
And, I'm bored of seeing kisses everywhere. Let me imagine them where I like them, and opt out where I don't, thank-you-very-much.
The (lack of?) romance
No time for romance between Aziraphale and Crowley, sure (except for the kiss above). There was no time for it in the plot (nothing to do with the length of the movie, for once). They had to reconcile, try to save the universe, and fail. No time to dawdle. And no time afterwards to celebrate and relax, since there is no after.
As much as I don't care for Asa and Anthony, I really like what is shown of them. They don't have that "passion of the young". They don't kiss or make big declarations in front of a crowd (although, maybe they do? We don't see enough of them to know for sure. But I like to picture it that way). Instead, they hold hands, share quiet moments, a cup of tea and a nice evening under the stars. They have a mature love, made not of kisses and touches and desire but of moments and understanding and love.
The fix-it fanfic I would like to write (but probably won't)
(but if somebody else wants to write it, I would love to read it!)
gives a good reason for Crowley to talk to Aziraphale in Heaven
expands on all the missing scenes between Aziraphale and Crowley
has Jesus more sure of himself
takes the time to have Jesus and the people he interacts with serve no plot points, but give us some nice vibes
shows us how Crowley got his heavenly outfit. Has him tell Aziraphale he hates it. Has Aziraphale point out that the outfit bears his colors, and so Crowley is forced to relent.
expands on Michael's intentions and descent into craziness
finds another way to reach Michael than the Bentley
removes Satan from the story. I didn't mention him before, but what is his purpose?
changes God. She can be bored with the story. She can want to go along with the original 6000 years plan. But She should admit or be persuaded that she liked watching Aziraphale, and Crowley, and the humans, and their struggles, their victories, their failures, their shortcomings⊠The Book of Life has been destroyed, the universe is no more, but it is in her power to restore it. Or to let Aziraphale and Crowley fill their blank books and rebuild the world. Have Crowley wish for that instead of what he did. Better: have Aziraphale convince Crowley to convince God that this is the right thing to do.
There is a lot to be done with what we were given. And there's even a way to keep our demon and angel, keep Asa and Anthony, have them multiply throughout history (at least every time Aziraphale and Crowley met! I saw a picture of Aziraphale writing fanfics in the New Books of Life, loved it!), have all of it while still respecting canon!
