PASSING TRIBUTE TO DICKERSON LEGACY

The family of Robert Dickerson has donated one of the Australian artist’s works to the Art Gallery of WA ahead of an exhibition at Gallows Gallery.
His widow Jennifer Dickerson has given the gallery the 1997 acrylic on canvas painting The Businessmen under the Commonwealth Government’s Cultural Gifts Program.
Dickerson, who died last October aged 91, was best known for his blank- faced chiaroscuro figures with long noses and dark eyes in settings much like inner-city Sydney where he grew up. He was a co-founder of the 1950s figurative artistic push The Antipodeans with Arthur Boyd, John Perceval and Charles Blackman.
Living on the south coast of New South Wales, he was painting almost until his death of cancer. Asked a few years ago how he continued to produce work at a pace which would put some artists in the shade, he said: “What’s the point in living if you’re not working hard?”
Dickerson was a regular visitor to WA and had a great affection for Fremantle, having driven across the Nullarbor in 1997 to spend three months in the port city.

His son Sam, who runs Sydney’s Dickerson Gallery, and Mrs Dickerson have worked with Gallows Gallery’s Kathryn Stafford on an exhibition of 35 paintings and works on paper titled Passing By. It will be opened by AGWA curator of contemporary Australian paintings Jenepher Duncan.
“Bob never ran out of ideas and his visits to WA simply expanded his vocabulary,” Mrs Dickerson said. “Here in Perth we have friends in the racing industry and others who are teachers, artists and shopkeepers.”
“Some of these works were done in Bob’s Fremantle studio. Some of the subjects, such as the girl and mother, were a family we saw as we drove across the Nullarbor, with a child who did homework in a cafe at every stop.”
Robert Dickerson: Passing By opens at Gallows Gallery, Mosman Park, on Thursday at 6.30pm and runs until August 7. Details: gallows gallery.com
