Communication in healthy relationships is a lot like trying on different outfits. Each person has their own closet, and together they make an outfit. Over time, one or both parties might come to realize, you know what, this vest actually doesn’t really work for me. What if we tried this shawl? In this way, no one is ever really wrong. We are just entering into a collaborative space where we get to grow, without judgments. We are creatively finding the ways we optimally mesh together. And sometimes, you find that one person’s closet just doesn’t fit you. You’ve tried all kinds of things, but it just isn’t looking or feeling right for you. In this case, there’s nothing wrong with their clothes, it’s just that those clothes will better suit someone else. And you’ll find clothes that are better suited for you. Relationships are exploratory. And when they’re founded on trust and compassionate communication, we all get the benefit of growing together!
