Actor LeVar Burton explains his ritual to prevent being shot by police
Actor and director LeVar Burton explained Monday on CNN that he follows a particular procedure every time he is stopped by police to avoid a potentially deadly confrontation. He removes his hat and sunglasses, rolls down his window, and puts out his hands to show he is not armed.
“I do that because I live in America,” Burton added.
He’s not exactly known for bad behavior, but even the former host of the children’s show Reading Rainbow, and Star Trek the Next Generation actor, fears he will be mistreated by police because of his skin color.
And this guy has been rich for 30 years.
Let that sink in.
Eric Fischer is back with another remarkable locals vs. tourists visualization, this time exploring the languages of Twitter in major cities. Pictured here, New York City’s tourists converge on Times Square.
Fischer’s work appeared in MoMA’s fantastic Talk To Me: Design and the Communication Between People and Objects.

20 secs animations bond together by a poem on bullying. The work is great and really inspirational "To This Day is a project based on a spoken word poem written by Shane Koyczan (shanekoyczan.com) called “To This Day”, to further explore the profound and lasting impact that bullying can have on an individual."
It's been a while since I posted any vfx or moton graphics stuff... This is just perfect to start the year!

Late Bloomers of the Arts
For all of you who’ve felt even for a second that it’s ever too late:
1. Charles Bukowski had his first book published when he was 49
2. Leonard Cohen was 33 when his first album was released
3. Marina Abramovic’s career as an independent artist wasn’t solidified until she was 42
4. Julia Child’s career started when she was 36
5. Van Gogh started drawing when he was 27
6. Monet painted Sunrise when he was 33, but wasn’t producing his best work until his early 40s
7. Kazuo Ohno started dancing when he was 27
8. William S. Burroughs had his first novel published when he was 39
Heck yeah...
"...that the gap between native-app experiences and what developers can now build for the web with HTML5 is narrowing: There's little difference now between The Cut's iPad app and its recently redesigned website, which was not the case a year ago."
"...Amazon — of all companies — created the Elastic Compute Cloud, an internet service that has completely changed the face of computing since it debuted a little over six years ago, providing instant access not to an online store or a search engine or an e-mail account, but to a virtually unlimited collection of computing power." "With EC2, you can use all that computing power to run just about any software application you like, including a website such as Instagram or Pinterest, or a banking application that simulates credit risk, or a research tool that analyzes the human genome. Rather than loading your software on physical computer servers you’ve set up in a closet or a data center, you can load it onto virtual servers you’ve set up in your web browser. And whenever you need more virtual servers, you can have them."

The mending project by chinese-born artist Beili Liu
is a performance art and installation project that consists of hundreds of chinese scissors suspended from the ceiling in a shimmery cloud. The piece involved the artist sitting in front of a small black table, hand-mending patches of fabric together which visitors are encouraged to cut themselves near the entrance. As the performance continues, the piece grows as one continuous cloth and lays spread on the floor. The hovering mass of the downward-pointed scissors represent the distant fear and looming violence present in today’s cultural climate. The sharp blades above the artist are put on contrast by the silent and simple act of mending. The dichotomous result of the instant fear superimposed with the calming effect of the sewing creates a surreal atmosphere in the room.

DMI alumni Scott Murray’s new book about creating interactive data visualizations with D3.js is now available in PDF form from O’Reilly Media.
Get the PDF or preorder the print version here.
Interactive Data Visualization is written at an introductory level for designers and visual artists without programming experience, journalists interested in the emerging data journalism processes, and others keenly interested in visualization and publicly available data sources.
The book extends Scott’s wonderful set of free D3 online tutorials.
The nature of code - book
I never met Daniel Shiffman. But while he was writting his book I was working on my senior project. His Processing tutorials and book chapters were a big part of how I learned to code an interactive instalation, even if I used this knoledge to work with openframeworks. His book, The nature of code is coming to print soon. I'm getting a copy, since I didn't backed the kickstarter The Nature of Code Book Project. I took this photo from the post “Nature of Code” by Daniel Shiffman – Natural systems using Processing where more info and a review can be found.
Douglas Dtanley blog post viaCAN, because his website his own dead ugly...
Right around the time I was starting the work on jqMobi and jqUi (Thanksgiving 2011), I had a chance to play with a Windows Phone 7 at a hackathon in Boston. A Microsoft evangelist, David Isbitski, was showing his phone off and I was impressed. There was one problem though, IE9 wasn’t there.
