Neither Aquaman nor Wonder Woman hail from ancient Greece or Rome (technically) yet both sport armor with strong ties to those eras and cultures. In this case, the armor, along with the trident, is fairly common for any and all warriors intended to imply a connection to the sea. The fisherman’s weapon was used by the Retiarius - gladiators in the Roman Colosseum who sported a similar single-arm shoulder and arm protection (known as a manica).

But for those Polynesians who practice the art of tribal tattoos going back centuries (including the half-Hawaiian Momoa’s ancestors), marking one’s skin with ink was all the armor needed. Techniques and purpose vary across Polynesian peoples, but several common images and spiritual connections persist. In this case: the image of the spearhead; or rather, fields of overlapping spearheads seeming to cover both arms, and continued into the engravings on the armor itself.

As one might expect, the image is meant to convey courage and battle strength. The broader meaning can simply be that of warrior, or even a bond to stabbing sea creatures like stingrays. The placement of the tattoo can be just as important as the image itself, so Aquaman being literally covered in spears from the shoulder down sends a clear message.

And all I did was type, “Aquaman Polynesian tattoos.”

3. The comic book covers are NOT Aquaman’s original depiction. If you’re supposedly a comic book fan and being rude to others for their “lack of origin”, KNOW YOUR INFO. No, scratch that. DON’T BE RUDE TO OTHERS. Aquaman had a “shirt” orange and full of scales. Thrre were no visible tattoos or various markings. Nada. The only thing the comic book covers have that are close to Aquaman’s original depiction is his blonde hair. Nothing more.

4. Revamping a character and making them more era aproppriate is VASTLY COMMON in comic books. There are whole universes created for that exact purpose(i.e. Ultimate Universe - Marvel). Parallel universes with different takes on characters, etc etc. The point of comic vook characters is to appeal to the people. Many of the characters were created in an era comic books were mainly consumed by male white North-Americans. Establishing super heroes and comics as a media was difficult enough on its own, so of course it targeted the mainstream consumers. That changed over the years. As the consumer pool changes and broadens, the same changes the product. Thus meaning, constantly revamping characters or creating new ones more era and consumer appropriate. (that’s not always a good thing, that’s how the market works). Plus, new creators get into the business, creators that now CAN enter the business(minorities etc) so more varied representation occurs in the comics.

5. Cinematic Universes DO NOT EXIST in the same universes as comic books, they are NOT handled by the same people or teams and ARE allowed their own creative and different takes. i.e. Arrowverse shows that often depict many different things than the comics, MCU movies doing some comic book arcs and not presenting freaking damn everything thats happening in the comics etc etc. Hell, even inside the comic book world there are hundreds of different takes on arcs that DO NOT take into account everything that happens or has been revamped in previous issues or arcs.

6. Aquaman was never white, North American white to begin with. At worst he was of NO origin, at best he was Meditarennean. The no origin part, allows for a different creative take and gives freedom to the writer/artist to add more details. The polynesian tattoos are a smart addition on a different take of the character. Does it keep it close the character? Yes. Is the character who they’re suppossed to be? King of the sea, strong fighter, symbol of the underwater world? Yes. Are the tattoos appropriately depicted and not being culturally inappropiate(for polynesian culture)? From what I’ve gathered from this post, yes. Then having a problem with polynesian tattoos on a character with no supposed origin, is not okay.

7. The only situation I’d be okay with having a character with no supposed origin have tattoos or anything else from a different culture, would be if someone from said culture found it not culturally okay. In this case, if a Polynesian comes and says “you know its not okay to put on Aquaman those tattoos” id be like “okay, i hear you, explain to me why so i’ll do better next time”. It’s their culture, they can judge if it’s okay or not.

8. EVEN IF we accept it was “brownwashing” (which is NOT, that’s exactly what I’m trying to say with this whole post), “brownwashing” hasn’t happened for years in hundreds of media, characters and depictions, it’s not a trope that has dominated the film and other media industry for decades, it’s not happening from a huge number of people systematically against other people, it’s not connected to systematic oppression, deaths, suicides, descrimination and everything else NON WHITE races have suffered in the hands of whites, north Americans/north Europeans. So even if it was brown-washing(which again, IT WASN’T),

let it be “brownwashing”.

White superhero characters and otherwise adventurers exist in hundreds. In comics, films, books, everywhere. Non whites with coherent storylines, a lot of stories, franchises are not that many, nor common. As a white, especially male, you have TONS of stuff to go to, to get your daily fix of adventure, freaking awesome read, freaking awesome film. Non white americans and north europeans, dont.

2) y’all play the Mediterranenan not-white game when fits your agenda, but you also scream to them “wHiTeYs” whenever you can.
