POV: the batfamily finally finds out that dick had hallucinations
"Wait. WHAT?"
It was a rare night off.
Somehow, Bruce wasnât brooding.
Somehow, Damian wasnât stabbing anyone.
Somehow, they were all on the same couch eating takeout and bickering like semi-functional human beings.
Which, of course, meant it couldnât last.
Jason, halfway through his second box of lo mein, jabbed his chopsticks toward Dick and grinned.
âHey, Dick,â he said. âRemember when I revealed myself as Red Hood and you thought I was one of your hallucinations?â
There was silence.
Like. Dead. Silence.
Everyoneâs heads swiveled toward Dick in perfect synchronization.
Dick froze, dumpling halfway to his mouth. ââŚUh.â
Tim squinted. âHallucinations?â
Damian tilted his head sharply. âExcuse me?â
Even Bruce raised an eyebrow. Which, for Bruce, was the equivalent of spitting out his drink.
Jason, oblivious, just chuckled. âYeah, man, you were so casual about it. I was trying to be all dramatic, kick your door in, make a big âta-da!â speech, and you didnât even flinch. Just told me to go away and kept bandaging yourself.â
He snorted. âDidnât even believe I was real for, like, a week. Thought I was another one of your creepy guilt ghosts or whatever.â
He popped a noodle in his mouth, completely unconcerned.
Meanwhile, the rest of the family looked like Jason had just announced Dick was secretly a supervillain.
Dick finally groaned, setting his dumpling down.
âOh my god, guys, donât look at me like that.â
ââLook at you like that?!ââ Tim squawked. âYou were⌠you were hallucinating Jason?? Like, regularly?!â
âI wouldnât say regularly.â
âDefine âregularly,â Grayson,â Damian snapped.
Jason just grinned wider and leaned back. âOh, it was regular. Iâd show up in his kitchen at, like, 3 a.m. and heâd just go ânot now, Jay, Iâm busyâ and walk away. Like I was the worldâs most annoying imaginary friend.â
Dick shot him a look. âYou were annoying. Real or not.â
Jason held up his hands in mock surrender.
Tim, however, still looked horrified. âWhy didnât youâwhy didnât you tell anyone you were hallucinating your dead brother?!â
Dick shrugged helplessly. âWhat was I gonna say? âHey guys, you know how Jason died? Well, surprise, I see him in the kitchen sometimes!â Youâd all have locked me in a padded cell.â
Bruce finally spoke, his voice quiet and steady.
ââŚWe would have helped.â
Dick winced. âI know. I just⌠didnât want to bother anyone. Figured itâd go away eventually.â
Jason, in a rare show of gentleness, reached over and whacked Dick lightly on the back of the head.
âYouâre such a dumbass,â he said.
Dick smiled faintly. âTakes one to know one.â
Jason grinned back.
Meanwhile, Damian folded his arms and muttered something about âpathetic coping mechanismsâ while also scooting a little closer to Dick.
Tim just kept staring, wide-eyed, like he was re-evaluating his entire childhood.
And Bruce⌠didnât say anything else. But he didnât stop watching Dick for the rest of the night.
Later, though, when Dick stood up to get another soda, Jason called after him:
âHey! Just so weâre clearâstill real.â
Dick rolled his eyes and shot back over his shoulder:
âNot convinced.â
Jason barked a laugh.
And if the rest of the family kept glancing between the two of them for the rest of the evening, wellâneither of them seemed to mind.
