Hi Imma ramble outside of the tags because I may have to much to say that’ll max out the tag limit so

As someone who grew up with little money I grew up with a lot of canned proteins like tuna, spam, chicken, oysters, corned beef, etc. very good cheap source of protein and we found a lot of uses for them in cooking when. I even have some cans of tuna now. And the economy rn is…well what it is so they’re still a very handy thing to have on hand.

There of course is a ton of stigma against canned goods and especially canned meats. All rooted deeply is classism. I heard it all growing up about chemicals and mystery meat and the low quality and it made me feel bad and embarrassed. And I know it’s the same for a lot of people.

If it’s not your taste and you just don’t like it that’s fine but if you won’t even eat it because you think you’re too good for it you need to think about why you actually think that and reevaluate, especially when talking about it around someone who either genuinely enjoys this sort of food or that’s just what they can afford.

And I will say I was thrilled when sardine themed stuff started becoming mainstream but I bet a lot of the people buying this stuff from Home Goods or Tjmaxx or whatever big corporation probably also wouldn’t even try sardines because they think they’re disgusting without a second thought as to why they think that. They’ll spend hundreds collecting sardine stools and sardine themed bags and towels but the few dollars a can would cost them is just too beneath them.

If you don’t like seafood or have allergies or just different tastes that’s all good! Those are valid.

Just don’t dismiss foods as automatically bad or beneath you because it’s canned, frozen, boxed, etc because all the ridiculous stigmas around the ingredients and how they’re made is all just classist attempts to sell you something expensive you don’t need.
