Text: I know, I know, I’m a terrible disappointment. You’ll have to get in line behind my dad for that one.

[Text] I’m plenty safe, thank you. I did have to work that night, all of us had to work. Not much of a choice when things had gone positively mad. I wasn’t injured at all.

[Text] It would destroy itself. I do think people are all just in shock about what happened now, rather than looking for it to happen again.

[Text] Again, I’m glad you are unharmed. Your job is quite a dangerous one… Do you ever worry about getting injured?

[Text] I’m hoping that people have learned something from all of this.

[text] I am fine. It is you that I worry about. The news grows ever grimmer according to the papers, and I do not wish to see you exhausting yourself.

[text] We were working overtime there for a bit, but we finally got some breaks to get some rest. I’m still working a lot more than usual, but that’s to be expected what with the state the city is in.

Mila scoffed, doubting anyone else would really know who she was. She’d only been one of many to testify in Oz’s favour. But still…. she hadn’t expected anyone to know her, and someone that woman had. “All I did was tell the truth- tell my truth. Is that deserving of being hated?” Her voice was cold, only partially seeking an actual answer from the Watch officer. What did he think of her? What did he think of Oz or the Montagues or any of it? No… it was better not to think about that. He was going to get her home, no point turning on him. 

“It should be fine, it’s off the main streets… And I’m hoping this is sticking to that.” Fear gripped her then. She’d been so set on getting home, back to Chewie, back to safety. But what if it wasn’t safe? Her home was a ground floor apartment, what if people were breaking her windows too? “Let’s go quick. My pup’s at home, he must be terrified.” The one day she hadn’t brought him along to the clinic… Damn him and his stubbornness. 

The sharpness in her tone wasn’t missed, and Lucca only sighed. It was his job to remain neutral regarding the politics of the city. “No, telling your truth is not deserving of any hate. In the end, what I think about it isn’t what everyone else thinks. Not everyone’s going to look at what you did, or said, the same way that i do. I’m not saying it’s right, but that’s the reality of it. People have a tendency not to think rationally when emotions get involved, whether or not their hearts in the right place.”

Text: You mean there isn’t some Watch saying about investigation or curiosity that you pull out at all your department meetings?

Text: Haha, not that I know of... and if there were, it would depend on what it was before I’d go sharing it.

Text: Honestly, I don’t know if any of us is witty enough to come up with some saying for us.

[Text] I’m plenty safe, thank you. I did have to work that night, all of us had to work. Not much of a choice when things had gone positively mad. I wasn’t injured at all.

[Text] Hopefully things will calm down soon so you’re not put into a situation like that again. 

[Text] I’m better now. The first week was horrible. I’d really like it if you came over, actually. I’ve not been able to get out much and I miss talking to someone. The concussion has gone, so don’t worry about that, the headache is just the remnants of it.

[Text] I wasn’t expecting it to be quite that bad.

[Text] They have to calm down eventually. It’s not possible for a city to keep going that way without end.

[Text] I’m glad that you’re doing better. Truly, I am. Then I’ll be there. Just send me your address. Do you need anything? I can grab anything you need on my way to see you. Just let me know.

“Yet I have the most peculiar hunch that says you use your keen eye for danger to run head first into the situation.” She wished that she could keep him safe, but Lucca was a smart man. He knew what he was doing, and to deny him the opportunity to help others would be to deny him the right to be himself. Still she worried that the one good man in the Watch would be injured in the line of duty. It would give her all the more reason to hate the morons the manufactured evidence against Oz. “I will hold you to that.” As the cathedral loomed before them, Bella stopped on the stairs. She could not lie in front of such a holy place. Her plan was to check on a few of those she knew that would seek out this place as a refuge. From there, she would climb to the roof and access the situation in order to form a plan to help any Montague left outside in this. None of which Lucca could know. “I suppose this is goodbye then.” 

“My job isn’t exactly the sort of job that lets me spot danger and run away from it. I have to help where I can. I didn’t join the watch so that I could be afraid of the things happening around me. I have to keep the citizens of the city safe, and if that means heading into danger, then so be it. I’ll just have to be careful and take care of myself best that I can. I’ll be okay.” Lucca’s words were mainly for her, but they also served to reassure himself that he could deal with the riots and still make it out unscathed. He had to believe it, otherwise he wouldn’t be able to do his job. He couldn’t afford for people to think of him as being incapable of doing his job, he had to prove himself as a submissive in the Watch. As they stopped on the stairs, Lucca let out a sigh and then gave her a nod. “Only goodbye for now. We’ll see each other soon, I’m sure. Take care of yourself, and be careful. If things get dangerous here, find somewhere safe to go, okay?”

The man easily caught her hand and for a moment, she considered pushing him back with her other hand. But that’s when she actually looked at him and her heart sunk. A Watch officer. Fuck, she was so close to getting into serious trouble there. What would Joan think of her? What would she, MIla, think of herself if she got into that kind of trouble tonight? 

Still, when he began talking, she pulled her hand out of his grip and took a small step back, glancing around even as he did. While she had no issue with the man, he was still a stranger to her. Admittedly one who had helped her out of a very bad situation, but still…. a stranger. “I didn’t mean to hit you, Officer. But you do have to realise that a big looming man striding up from behind me while I’m already surrounded by assholes who hate me isn’t really the most comforting thing.” She pointed out, though she continued, “Thank you, though… For stopping it.” 

She took a look around them again and shook her head, disgusted by what was going on. “I live a few blocks south from here. Just…” She pointed down towards where she swore she could see flames? Were people really lighting shit on fire? “There’s no chance you might want to walk with me? Just a bit?” She wasn’t scared… No, she was just trying to be smart. As strong and tough as she was, she was still petite, and if people were literally losing their shit, there was only so much she could do to protect herself.

From the look on her face, Lucca could easily believe that she didn’t mean to throw a punch at him. It had been a snap reaction, and he was willing to let that slide because she hadn’t tried to continue her assault. He shook his head and said, “No harm done. You didn’t get me, we’re fine. I understand, some stranger walks up and gets in your space when tensions are rising, don’t worry about it. You’ve done nothing wrong... and you’re welcome. Although, you don’t need to thank me for anything.”

His eyes turned in the direction she said she would need to go and frowned, “Yeah, I’d say there’s a definite chance of me going with you. It doesn’t look very safe out that way. You’d be better off with company, and if that woman was any indication of how other people will feel about you in this city, let’s just assume that others will try to follow her lead.” Lucca nodded in the direction they needed to go. “Let’s get walking before things start getting worse. If your home isn’t safe, I’ll have you know we’ll need to think up a whole different plan.”

[Text] No I suppose not. But it is a scary thought, you out there all night. You must have seen a lot of chaos 

[Text] Unfortunately not as lucky as yourself. I got caught in what can only be described as a stampede and badly sprained my ankle and hit my head against the curb. I still have a headache and have been told I’ll need physical therapy for the next few weeks

[Text] I saw more chaos than I would ever like to, if I’m being honest.

The bottle didn’t throw Bella off balance as much as the way that Lucca gripped her. She knew that it was his job to keep everyone in Verona safe, but she was only one person. His time would be better spent stopping the fights, yet she was glad to have him with her. Of course she could take care of herself, but he made her feel safe. Rather than admit that, Arabella decided it was best to think that she enjoyed it merely, because when he was with her, she knew that he was safe as well. “I did not realize that they trained you in how to deal with idiots, although I have heard that they enjoy tinfoil.” It was a bit tongue in cheek, but no one should ever have even believed a riot of this proportion should be possible. The only reason that Bella could fathom for such behavior was panic at the prospect of an apocalypse. She sighed, looking at him out of the corner of her eye. “Will you at least text me when the phone lines are back up? If you end up landing in the hospital, I’m never letting you live it down.” She’d have offered to stay with him, but that would eliminate her chances of finding family in the fray when he left. 

Lucca shook his head at her comment, “It’s not that I’ve been trained to deal with idiots. We’re just trained to deal with a lot of situations. In turn, we take what we’ve learned and try to apply it to any scenario we’re faced with. I’ll be alright out there. I have a good eye for dangerous situations, and I can make sure that I’m not hurt.” It was nice to know, however, that someone was concerned with his well-being. It was likely that aside from his mother, Bella was the only one who would really worry about how he fared at the end of it all. “I’ll text you once the phones are back up, and I promise that if I end up in the hospital, you can hold it over my head until the end of days.” He managed to flash her an amused smile before looking out ahead of them and seeing that they were coming up to their destination soon.
