Yessss! And really, it’s also just Morotia x1000, flipped inside out and adjusted for Maya. Despite her claim to the contrary, Riley was upset about Maya and Lucas being voted favorite couple. So what did she do? She “became” Morotia and she talked about the “ridiculous futility of caring.” (“Hope is for suckers,” anybody?) She pulled a REALLY over the top version of what Maya does when she wants to protect herself from being hurt, essentially, partly because of the Smiley Riley thing. But she comes back from it pretty easily compared to what Maya’s about to go through (why? Because what Riley feels for Lucas is VERY DIFFERENT from what Maya feels for Lucas). So naturally what’s going on with Maya now is a WAY dialed up and more nuanced version of what Riley did when she “went Morotia,” although a major, major difference is that Maya didn’t change consciously. She just kinda…slipped into it. Maya’s been torn apart by feelings she doesn’t understand. (Rewatch that GMNY Corpanga pep talk in light of the non-triangle arc and you’ll go 👀👀👀). But at the same time, Maya’s friendship with Riley is EXTREMELY important to her which adds a whole ‘nother layer of distress. Anyway, part of how you know we’re meant to connect Maya’s crisis back to the Morotia thing is the repetition of “come back!” It’s a square dance, and this is Maya experiencing a way more intense and real version of Riley’s Morotia turn in Yearbook. There’s also a connection to Commonism, but I think @westwingwolf has been pondering that a bit more in depth than I have (the whole “we’re all the same and we can share” thing), so I’m gonna shush and pass the baton to her!
