Lucas x Nana of Mother 3

Like you have Lucas who's attached to Tazmily and watches it change into something unrecognizable, and then you have Nana who doesn't really seem to care either way and is mostly indifferent/unaware of what's happening around her.

You have Lucas' entire journey about acceptance and healing from his trauma, opening himself up to love and forming connections despite the pain and grief, while Nana isolates herself, pushes people away before they can hurt her and holds herself back with people she doesn't trust to avoid rejection.

I think part of the reason for their differences is the fact that they seem to come from pretty different experiences. Lucas is grieving the love he's lost, both his family and the support of his village. While from what little we know about Nana she seems to never have had much of that to begin with. Her not caring much about tazmily and her intentionally isolating herself make sense if she's always been ostracized by the village. And if we take into account eb64's backstory too, she seems to have had a tragic family history of her own.

Although i'm not a big fan of lucasnana, I had a lot fun drawing them! Especially Nana since it is the first time i draw her (aside from a few unfinished sketches)

I think Nana would have romantic feelings for Lucas, that much is obvious. It’s simple— She met a boy that would listen to her, that would spend time with her, that wouldn’t find her annoying or think she talks too much. It’s easy to fall in love with someone who treats you well when the concept is so foreign to you. Lucas helped her feel important for the first time in her life when no one else was able to do that for her amidst her social isolation and lack of familial relationships.

But Lucas… He likes her, okay? She’s really cool! She’s polite and funny, she dresses nice, (though a little old lady-y, but he thinks that’s cute in her own little way. Big floral dresses and cardigans, glasses with those little beaded chains to keep them secure on her head. Apparently the clothes are— …Were, her moms,) and she’s just a pleasant person to be around.

Where they differ is, Nana meets Lucas during a time where she wants to love. Her heart is open and free and willing where otherwise it would be closed off and untrustworthy. (Based on the fact she has no interactions with any other citizens of Tazmily— to my memory, she’s not so much as mentioned by the other kids. Where Richie will talk about Fuel or Angie will bring up Claus, so on so forth, Nana isn’t mentioned at all.)

Lucas meets Nana in a time where he’s grown quite cynical over love as a concept. He’s afraid, hesitant to open his heart up because love comes hand in hand with loss. If he lets himself love another person, who’s to say he won’t lose them too? If he falls in love, he’d let his heart grow vulnerable and raw and sueceptible to hurt in ways he can’t— Or, doesn’t want to handle again. So he doesn’t let anything happen between the two of them. But equally, he doesn’t have the heart to be blunt with Nana about it either— Because he does like her still.

It’s this messy, semi-unrequited love that the two of them don’t know how to really manage. Their views of love and experiences go hand in hand and yet their approaches are two opposite sides of the same coin.

Nana talks to him about it one day. She says it plainly, that she loves him. And she knows that Lucas doesn’t know if he loves her too. She says, “I don’t think I want you to love me right now anyway,” which leaves Lucas quite startled.

She explains it, though, mending the worried pit that began to form in Lucas’s stomach. “You’re not ready. You wouldn’t be able to give me your all. You’re scared of loving right now. And that’s okay. I’m patient. I’ll wait here, and I’ll keep loving you until you’re ready to love me too.”

She’s very surprised, but very honoured.

I like to see them together! But i can't draw them as a ship because im bad with romantic stuff LOL My designs for them are more friend-like relationship. I like to think Lucas likes to tease her jsakjsnm. : ) (I don't have problems w people shipping them, im just more focused on drawing stuff that makes me laugh)

before u say “sara... how is a straight pairing bigger brained than a mlm ship” OK WELL first off.... bi people exist ....... but even then anyway im thinking of it as a platonic relationship that could become romantic when theyre older. also i very VERY rarely ship unless i see a good amount of potential

anyway ness and lucas havent ever met outside of smash and they have zero canon interaction in their respective games. ness gets along with everyone and because lucas is a lot more multifaceted and shy i think he would be jealous of ness’s natural social inclinations and ease of being a “hero”

however lucas and nana are both outcasts of tazmily. nana is known to ramble about damn near anything and basically go

and because nobody likes her for it she decided to isolate herself completely and stare at the ocean. there was supposed to be more nana lore in eb64 that was cut from the finished game such as that her father was a sailor that got lost at sea but it would explain why she stares out at the ocean. she says she also knows the secret of tanetane island back in chapter 2 which is a whole nother beast of lore surrounding the wherabouts or fate of her family but anyway

nana and lucas’s lives are very similar where theyve lost their families (seriously we NEVER even see if nana had siblings or a mother) and shes shunned by the entire town, similarly to lucas. because lucas is so sweet he has the option to listen to her and at the end of her rambling she says

thats the nicest thing anyone in tazmily has ever said to him LMAO

when you interact with her again after that she says “you know, i think i could start to like you...” and i read this as implying not an immediate relationship but a strong budding friendship between them. nana is obviously distrustful of people because everyone hates her. and lucas is known for being the stubborn mule of the town who still “refuses to be happy” because he wont get a happy box. neither will nana.
