For a lot of trauma survivors, it can be incredibly hard to believe that what happened to you was “bad enough.” Especially if you were minimized, doubted, or taught to downplay your own pain. For a long time, the only proof you may have had that it really was that bad is the fact that you’re still suffering.

Your symptoms become evidence. Your panic, your numbness, your fear, your hypervigilance. They are the only tangible thing saying, this hurt me.

So when healing starts, it can feel terrifying. Because healing can feel like erasing the proof. Like letting go of the only thing that ever validated your experience. If you’re doing better, does that mean it wasn’t real? That it didn’t matter? That you made it up?

It didn’t. Your trauma doesn’t become less real just because your nervous system gets safer. Healing isn’t a denial of what happened. It’s a response to it.
