This place sucked. It was damp and dark and freezing cold, accompanied by a nasty chemical smell that never let up at all. But the slug that Player was following didn’t seem to mind as they chirped and whistled to themselves, leading Player deeper and deeper into the maze of pipes and crates.
“ hey… so are we actually going in a meaningful direction?” They whispered, eliciting a response of chirps and squeals. Player sighed, then coughed due to the noxious air, quickly silencing it in case He heard. But nothing seemed to hear them, as aside from the slimy dripping sounds that seemed to come from everywhere, it was silent.
“ brrrrrlbqrblblblb!” Bud head butted their leg angrily, probably for not listening to them.
“ ouch. Watch it, you’re hitting a bruise.” They gently push his face away from their leg.
“ a bruise. It’s from when I tripped on you and fell down all those stairs. They were concrete. I’m probably concussed too, but I’m fine.” They rub their knuckles over Buds head jokingly , and it lets out this burbbly little giggle, wiggling out from under their hand and climbing up their pant leg. Player detached them and held them up to eye level.
“ you’re breaking workplace rules. No public displays of affection on career grounds. You’re gonna get me written up.” Bud just stretches in their grip to press their face flat against Player’s. Player wants to laugh, but the ominous silence of the room keeps them quiet. They set them down and gently nudged them forward.
“ you were leading me somewhere important?”
“ blrblrlr!” They start off again, weaving through a seemingly endless room. The crates progressively space out, until they reached the end of the room, which led into another hallway. It would have been an easy trek, but when Player stepped out, the metal flooring freaked and groaned horribly, giving way and punching a foot sized hole through the floor.
“ shit. How old is this?” They tentatively press their shoe against the metal, and more simply crumbles away.
“ Bud, we’re gonna have to take a different route” they whisper to the slug, who’s already halfway across the room, apparently light enough to avoid the floor caving in under them. He squeaks and burbles for a second, before crawling back to a spot closer to Player, then spinning around in said spot, beckoning them to join him on the floor.
“ I’ll fall through. I’m too heavy.” He just spins and chirps again. “ I can’t step on the metal, it’ll break” they exasperate, but slug only growls and stomps on the floor, which, surprisingly, doesn’t crumble.
“ oh!” I’m stupid. Player stretches their leg to where Bud was, delicately pressing their foot down onto the floor. It held firm, even when they put their whole weight on it.
“ good job!” They excitedly whisper, patting him on the head. Bud burbgles happily, and scoots to another part of the floor. Slowly but surely, the both of them hopscotched their way across the floor, stopping frequently to find new spots. Only once or twice did the floor ominously creak under their weight. Almost to the door, they only pause once to look behind them when a distant clang echoed through the room. Player stopped, listening to make sure nothing was coming for them.
Everything was silent luckily, but as they turned back around, their foot crushed through the flooring, shredding their leg up to their knee. A small pained squeal escaped from their mouth before they could silence themselves, causing Bud to whip around in alarm to see what was the matter.
“ nonono I’m fine I’m fffffiine,” Player hisses through gritted teeth because it hurt so bad. “ I’m okay Bud! There’s no need to worry It just scratched my leg!” Bud looks unconvinced, probably due to how shaky and wheezy Player was, already becoming dizzy from how their leg was screaming in pain. Bud’s eyes get big and wet, as he nervously tugs on Players sleeve. Player winces, delicately trying to pull their leg out off the hole. Not much luck, the jagged edges firmly puncturing their leg in place like a bear trap.
“ shoot shoot shoot.” The inability to move paired with Him actively hunting them only made them try to jiggle their way out of the stupid hole, causing their leg meat to start gushing blood. Player frantically starts trying to pull shreds off metal off around their leg, which is dangerous in itself, as the metal makes horrible scraping noises that would alert even a deaf person, but at least it was going quicker; Bud began to join in, tearing pieces away. Their leg was like 90% free when Bud began to whimper, a sign that he’s scared.
“ I need you to stay quiet” Player whispers in a panic,” we’ve made too much noise already-“ then the room groaned this horrible metal groan.
Well, not the whole room.
As it opened up like a mouth and dropped them both into the darkness
Player didn’t remember hitting the ground.
Or falling for that matter.
All they remembered was waking up to Bud nudging them over and over and over, their arms wrapped tightly around him like a seatbelt. Bud squeaked and pushed his head into theirs, trying to get a response.
The wind must’ve been knocked out of me, They thought, for when they tried to say something, the only noise that could be heard was a tiny, strangled wheeze. But when Bud pushed against their arm, it flopped uselessly on the ground, completely numb.
Uh oh. Player tried to get up, but their body wasn’t moving an inch. They tried again, nothing. They couldn’t even breathe correctly, lack of oxygen starting to make their brain fuzzy and unfocused
Then they saw what was causing it, and suddenly their numb arm wasn’t much of a problem anymore. A 3 foot metal pipe was skewering through their left lung, pinning them in place like an insect.
Uh oh. That’s what Bud was squealing about… they wanted to tell him that they were okay, and they’ll be fine, but everything got really dark really fast as they bled to death on the cold metal floor.
A very long time later ( it could have very well been a month or an hour, they had no idea), they spluttered awake, lungs seizing and burning as they gasped, almost falling off the cot they were on to hack out the last bits of blood still in their lungs. Everything was spinning so aggressively that they almost passed out again, barely able to right themselves as the gripped the side of their cot.
“ I wouldn’t try getting up quite yet if I were you.”
They froze. The voice making their spine tingle in the worst possible way. He had them trapped again. Of course he did.
“ you can relax, i don’t plan on doing anything to you for a good long while, unless you give me reason to.” He was sitting in a chair across the room from them, right by the door, so they chance of getting out narrowed down to zero.
“ you suffered quite extensive injuries from that fall that, to be blunt, killed you.” I died?! “ naturally, that was my intention with you, however, I was… unaware of your companion in the room.” Players eyes finally focused enough to realize that Builderman was holding Bud in his lap, those 5 big eyes fixed on Player. He squeaked and hopped down, galumphing over to them and crawling up their leg, chirruping and whistling in joy. Builderman continued in a slightly lighter tone,“ fortunately, Roblox was unhurt by the fall, your body taking most, if not all of the impact.” He stood up and Player flinched, but he simply just walked to the door and pulled it open, pausing in the doorway for a moment. “ I appreciate your effort to protect him, whether it was purposeful or not.” He paused again, tapping his knuckles once or twice on the doorframe. “ I won’t bother you anymore.” He then left, shutting the door behind him, but leaving it unlocked. Player let out the breath they didn’t realize they were holding, and slumped back down on their cot, fatigue making their body feel like lead. Bud scrambled up onto their chest, purring and chirping as he squished his face into the crook of their neck. They let out a shaky chuckle, wrapping their arms around Bud as he hummed, and fell asleep for the first time in 3 weeks.
I wrote this in a 12:30 am sleep deprived stupor, so it’s a little quick but I still liked it a lot, I was gonna write in the injuries Player sustained from the fall but couldn’t find a good spot so I’ll just tell you: severe arterial damage, 12 broken ribs, spine broken in 3 different places, shattered shoulder blades, crushed skull, brain bleeding, internal bleeding, and deep tissue damage. The only reason they briefly woke up was because Bud zapped their heart enough to get it beating for a minute or two 😁👍
This is so CLOSE to what I imagined Player's turn from "test subject" to "babysitter". AND THE DIALOGUE, GOD! YOU CHARACTARIZED THEM SO WELL OMG
ABSOLUTE CINEMA I WANT 20 MORE
