As usual, their workday ended at 2am. That has been Light's rule. After countless arguments and even a few fist fights - they had reached a compromise.
'Fine, we stop working at two as long as the lights stays on,' L insisted.
Light had accepted. It was better than nothing.
Of course, there wasn't much of a choice when you were handcuffed to a detective 24/7. Since L refused to remove the chain while he still considered Light Kira. Sleeping in the same bed had become less of a decision.
Eventually it became a routine. L wasn't built for a regular sleep schedule. Every night before bed, he left a glass of water his sleeping pills, and a slice of cake on the bedside table. Just in case.
The first night they actually talked about something, Light made the first move. They were facing each other on the bed, and L wore a expression like someone with a pebble stuck in their shoe. 'Come on, it can't be that bad.' Light said. L sighed. 'Believe me, Light. It is. I dont like it.' Light let out a tired laugh. 'You've never shared a bed with anyone before?' 'I have,' L replied 'Just not with someone i believe is a serial killer who also happens to have such an elaborate skincare routine.' Light chuckled. 'Let me just remind you this was your idea.'
L stared at the ceiling for a moment. 'You know, there are actually studies linking psychopathic behavior to-' 'There we go,' Light groaned, gesturing at him. 'You always do that.' They started. 'You're the one who started this conversation, Light-kun.' 'Fair enough.' Silence. Light found himself wondering what chain of questinable decisions had led him to this.
'How is Misa?' L asked, without warning.
The questiong caught Light off guard. It had been almost a month since Misa was released from confinement. Not long after that Light ended things with her. She took it terribly. Came to the headquarters almost everyday, convinced she could change his mind. Nothing she said ever did. If anything, it only reassured him that ending the relationship was the right decision. They simply weren't right for each other. 'She is doing better.' Light answered quietly. L glanced at him. 'You mean, after trying to break into headquarters because her pride was hurt and security-' He had a faint smirk on. 'Yeah... that too.' Light did not feel good making fun of her anymore. After a minut of silence, Light spoke again. 'Have i ever told you how it was?'
That immediatly caught L's attention; The truth was, no one really understood why on earth they ended up together. Light seemed far too grounded and diciplined for someone like Misa. Different people, different needs. 'I am listening.' L shifted slightly to give Light his full attention.
Light looked up at the ceiling. 'She was in Shibuya with a friend when she saw me with some classmates from college. Apperently, it was love at first sight.' L rolled his eyes. Light quickly glanced at him and then continued. 'After stalking me for weeks, she finally worked up the courage to talk to me. And... i mean, she is cute.' Another eye roll. 'Could you stop?' Light protested. 'My apologies.' L replied, deadpan. 'I will do my best, please continue.'
'...Anyway. We started spending time together. Eventually, she told me about her life story, when she lived in the United States, her family... her parents. About their murder. About how Kira gave her the justice she thought the police never could. The police rejected her case, can you believe that?' 'I can.' Said L. Light continued. 'She was so vulnerable at the time.' His voice softened. 'If it hadn't been me, someone else could have taken advantage of that.' L quietly absorbed the weight of what Light meant.
'So you think you did the right thing.' L asked. 'I dont know. I never loved her the way she loved me. Even though I spent hours on the phone with her when she couldn't sleep.'
'But you were there when she needed the most.' L said. 'She never told me or anyone else on the task force about her parents like that.' A brief silence followed. 'So... you really earn her trust.'
'Maybe,' Light looked away. L wasn't defending Misa. He was simply stating a fact. Light had never been able to return her feelings. Even so, when she had been drowing herself in grief, he became the person she turned to. The one who kept her company through the quiet hours when the world felt unbearably quiet. At least now, she has other things to worry about. Her career. Her breakup with Light. Not every distraction is a good one. It doesn't mean she's healed, either.But time passes. The pain had dulled. Buried beneath everything else. Never truly gone.
Those were the thoughts that always found him at 2 am. Only now, when 2 am came, someone was there to listen. L hadn't offered advice. He hadn't tried to fix anything. He had simply stayed. Just as Light once had for someone else. Somehow, that was enough.
