Betty didn’t hear the bell. She was supposed to start her third lesson ten minutes ago. Only when it was quite as midnight had she realised that she was alone and daydreaming about something she can’t even remember.
“No running in the halls,” was what her teachers used to say when she was in high school.
Fuck it, she thought. The rule applied to the students and literally no one was there to stop her from doing all that she could to get to her class. She just had to turn the corner and reach it after passing three rooms.
As she sprinted faster, she twisted her foot to maneuver her body to turn, and although she slipped slightly in the process, she was now facing her designated hall. With her sights set to her classroom door, she didn’t notice Jughead in front of her who was equally unattentive to his surroundings because of the list in his hands. She eventually knocked him over. Hard.
Both collapsed with an ‘oomph’ followed by a loud thud from Jughead’s wooden list and Betty’s supplies.
The raven howled in pain at the same time that she lifted her head up.
“I am so sorry! I - ” she tried to apologise but soon froze. He did too.
Betty knew that groan, and Jughead knew that voice.
Snapping his head up, he saw her. Their faces were so close and he took in how her eyes were greener than ever. They were dull as well but never failed to put him in a trance. She’s hiding something, he concluded. Meanwhile, Betty studied his face too. He got chubbier - something she hadn’t noticed when they walked together after Pop’s . It was cute. And it wasn’t hard to ignore the crooked eyeglass on his face. He looked different.
Hot, she thought, followed by: Wait, what?
They didn’t know they were stuck in that position for quite some time now until someone coughed from above. It was obvious that the two were reluctant to look away from each other but they realised it wasn’t only one person who was currently watching them. Students of the aligned three rooms - including Betty’s class - were crowded at the doors. They probably checked in to see what caused the crashing sound. Their mouths were agape, eyes wide. Some looked amused while the others were simply shocked.
And then the whispers started.
“Wait, Mr Jones is banging our mechanics teacher?”
“How much do you wanna bet this has been going on for?”
“Are they secretly married?”
“Mr Weatherbee!” Betty shot up like Jughead had just burned her and offered the man weird gestures that made her situation look worse. “I’m sorry, this is just a misunderstanding. It’s my fault - ”
“I would like to talk to you both in my office, please,” Waetherbee said.
The two followed with their heads down, unable to meet the curious gazes of their students.
“So, Joneses. I don’t want to know why you two decided to make a mess in the halls,” Weatherbee continued after closing the door. “But please don’t do that again. What you two do at home should not be taken in the building. I thought you two were professionals now?”
“Um,” Betty began. “We’re not. . . uh. . . we’re not married.”
“Oh, I would’ve figured you two would be the first ones to tie the knot,” the man said and folded his arms. “But still, no funny business in the school.”
Betty was about to correct him again but thought it would’ve made things harder to talk about than they already were.
But, why? It’s been seven years, she told herself.
“Alright,” Jughead piped up after sensing Betty had nothing to say. “Won’t happen again Weatherbee. I have to get to the library. See you, Betty.”
With that he exited the room rather cooly and left the blonde to think about her previous question.
