𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐧: lori grimes & the feeling of being inadequate as a mother.
( this headcanon was sparked by my rewatch, after watching this scene. you definitely don’t have to agree with it, but please do not send hate or any sort of negativity regarding it as it is my personal headcanon and was never claimed to be canon. i am open to discussing it if you’re interested but please come at me with kindness and an open mind. )
I’m a good mom. There is a pattern throughout the show that has Lori either defending herself or degrading herself as far as her as a mother goes. But this scene in particular really struck a chord for me. It is not only right after we’re first introduced to her but is also the first time we hear her do something like this. I missed it on every other rewatch I’ve done but writing Lori has really made me be more aware of all the little things she does and all the easily missed moments and facial expressions you might not pick up on unless you’re paying attention.
It starts off with her mother. Lori’s relationship with her own mother is very strained and has been since she was a pre-teen. Her mother was controlling, never really fit into the loving mother role and Lori fell into this state of constantly doing what her mother wanted. Whatever her mother told her to do or not to do, Lori listened. Every activity she did growing up was determined by her mother, the friends she kept were her mother’s suggestion and it wasn’t until Lori went off to college that she sort of fell into her own. ( Shane played a big role in this. ) So because Lori never really had that go-to mother vision inside of her head, she constantly doubted her decisions and her ability to be a good mom to Carl. She was always afraid of becoming like her mom and having Carl look at her the way she looked at her mother. But it wasn’t just her mother that played a part in her feeling this way.
It’s no secret that the Grimes family dealt with a lot of marital issues. Lori even talks about wondering if she even still loved Rick in the flashback and I think he plays a part in her insecurities. Hear me out: Rick Grimes is not a bad guy and I don’t even think he’s a bad husband but he is human and humans make mistakes even without realizing them. Parenting with another person who does not think exactly the same way that you do can be difficult, you take a challenging task and make it even harder when mom and dad aren’t seeing eye to eye and I think that plays a lot into this issue Lori has. Off handed comments like “ I wouldn’t let him do this. “ or “ Are you sure XXX instead of XXX? “ or “ That’s not how I would’ve done it. “ can mess with a person after hearing it all enough times, especially since Lori was already doubtful. And I think Rick’s idea of parenting was different from Lori’s and therefore comments like those were made, not out of malice or with the intent of making her feel like she’d been doing something wrong but because he just had his own opinions and ideas for how Carl should be raised. And when you add all of that on top of their communication issues,
I think it all had a very negative effect on Lori and altogether that’s why she’s so insecure in herself as a mother.
