there was something to be said about growing up with someone. theo knew everything about draco, down to the way that bastard liked to write his name, the curve of every letter. same logic applied to leanne, even though they had spent less time together. something about her, theo was pretty sure she was engraved into his very dna. he didn't have a soulmate mark to prove it, but she was there. in his heart, in his soul, in the little memories that had kept him sane during the worst years of his life.
" ... give me the box, goodall." he chuckled, already taking the gift from her gladly. she could give him a lock of her hair and he would be satisfied, the junk from the bottom of her cupboard for all he cared! he paused when he took in all the snacks in the box, his eyes widening at the sight of the pickled onion monster munch that leanne used to gag even though they were his favorite.
" gods this ... is amazing. what? this is perfect." he grinned, that boyish grin he's had since childhood taking over his face. "you even got me mars bars! gods, i've missed mars bars. they're better than chocolate frogs, i tell you!"
a string of further protests are on the tip of her tongue. how could she beat a scarf and a personalized bottle of perfume? it was obvious he went over the budget ( she was saving up for months for the bottle alone! ), and leanne was... what? gifting him snacks he could very well buy himself?
but then theo grins and all her worries vanish and her shoulders ease and the breath she didn't realize she was holding escapes her. for a moment, leanne can't help it. a matching smile finds its way on her own features. her eyes linger on that smile... oh gods, that smile. it makes her heart flutter and her stomach dip and she nearly forgets herself. she remembers the first time she'd ever coaxed that smile out of him when they were kids. she remembers thinking she wanted to make him smile like that all the time — nearly made it her mission to do just that!
seeing him so excited almost felt like no time had passed at all and the distance between them wasn't so gaping. she bites back her smile, chewing on her bottom lip to stop her lips from curving into a smile. "oh, what a relief," and then her brows furrow, a small half-chuckle escaping her lips. "okay, but that might be too far. mars bars are not better than chocolate frogs! snickers, maybe, but not mars bars."
theo's eyes flickered to the gift in her hand, then back at her face. she always looked pretty, the way her curls seemed to brush against her cheeks and how her eyes would sparkle in the rather dim ballroom that this dreaded christmas party was taking place. if it wasn't improper, he could just stare at her for hours, counting the freckles that littered her face.
he had to keep reminding himself that she wanted nothing to do with him.
"ah ... what are the odds." he murmured, his mind thinking back to sweet but nosy petunia rosemill, who had begged him to participate. the little gossip probably had something to do with it. she knew everything about everyone in the bloody ministry it seems like.
"well ... here." he pressed the present into her free hand, already overthinking the simple scarf and perfume that he had purchased. he had gone into muggle london for his gift, found something soft and a perfume that reminded him of her. of vanilla and caramel and everything sweet in the world. and yes it was over the price limit and yes he got the bottle engraved with her name, he was a loser when it came to her.
despite her little slip-up being thankfully ignored, she can feel the tips of her cheeks redden. she hopes the blush she'd dusted over the apples of her cheeks were enough to hide her embarrassment. being around theo was so confusing. she wanted to hate him — to hold onto that promise she'd made to herself the day she'd realized the boy she once knew and adored was gone. but was he really? the more she found herself in his vicinity, the more she could see glimpses of her teddy. he was still kind and attentive and his jokes to ease the tension were as lame as ever, and ...
leanne clears her throat, shaking her head to rid those kinds of thoughts. "thank you," she says, and she's internally cringing with how formal it sounded. she offers her own gift up to him before she's tearing the wrapping paper off her gift. she lets out a sharp gasp at the sight. she didn't know what she expected to receive, but the scarf paired with the exact perfume she'd been eyeing and saving up for was not it. and the personalized engraving?! oh, gods... leanne looks up at him, her brown eyes riddled with surprised gratitude. "it's... perfect. thank you — i ... don't even know what to say or how you even knew..."
she suddenly thinks the wrapped box full of carefully curated wizard and muggle treats she'd remembered and noticed theo liked was foolishly juvenile and cheap. she should have known better than to just choose to replenish and organize his snack drawer. "my gift for you isn't as good as yours," she admits lamely. "i can just give you the minimum spend in galleons instead."

Theo should have said no.
When he was asked to participate in the ministry secret santa by a secretary who had always been kind to him, he should have been polite and said no. But then she had ranted to him about how hard it was to get people to participate and he had felt guilty as he watched her chew on her bottom lip so now ... here he was.
Holding a gift. For ... Leanne.
Lea. His Lea.
Well not his. Never his. Not now or ever because she had been avoiding him for weeks and everytime he heard about her, she was dating someone new. She had settled on his coworker recently.
Louis ... Theo hated Louis. Not for any good reason, just because he got to be with Lea and Theo didn't. That was enough to make Theo hate the other wizard with a passion.
Theo took a breath, spiked punch in one hand and present in another, as he slowly maneuvered through the crowded Christmas party. How he hated crowds like this ... but ever since he pulled Lea's name and was told he couldn't switch, he had been building up the courage to be here. Now. In a crowded space with people who hated him ... all to give her this present.
Theo found her by the punch bowl, obviously looking around for someone. If that someone was Louis or her friend Susan who worked in the auror department, who knows. All Theo knew was that she was alone so it was a perfect time to present her with his gift.
"Hi .... here." Theo murmured, holding out the hastily wrapped present towards her. He had wrapped it himself, no help from Ziggy at all. " ... I'm your secret santa."
the universe had to be playing a joke on her. a cruel, twisted joke during one of leanne's favourite holiday festivities. not many people liked secret santa with their work colleagues, but leanne found it fun! it was a nice way to get to know people from other departments, and it was a gratifying feeling to see the shocked look on their faces when she got the present just right. and of course lea would get it right! she'd spend the weeks leading up to the holiday party gathering intel from friends and silently ( and very much not creepily ) observing her chosen name... only leanne didn't need to do any of that this year because she still knew her secret santa more than she wanted to admit.
she knew what kind of coffee he took in the morning, what kind of books he tended to gravitate towards, and which drawer he used to stash his snacks. leanne couldn't deny that she'd taken notice of a lot of things about theodore nott, and that was all just passive observations for when she needed him for a job.
"theo," leanne nearly startles at the sound of theo's voice. he was just the wizard she was looking for, but his sudden appearance has her heart pounding... definitely by being caught by surprise, of course. no other reason. leanne blinks, her gaze flickering between theo, the gift in his hands, and then the gift in her own. "oh. that's... a coincidence. i'm yours." her eyes widen, and she's quick to add, "i mean, i'm your secret santa, too. what are the odds?"

i used to think you were really cool until i found out you were in love with a death eater. don’t you have any shame? and the fact that you were obsessed with him at hogwarts and he didn’t even look at you? have some dignity, woman. i mean really! theo’s just going to abandon you and you’re going to look pathetic all over again!
the reminder that she'd been so infatuated with a guy who refused to even glance in her direction at hogwarts shouldn't have still affected leanne the way it did. it comes in random bursts now rather than the prolonged ache in her chest, but the current sinking feeling wasn't something she anticipated to feel today... not when she'd just had lunch with him. "theo wouldn't do that." again, anyway. he's reassured her as much when she'd told him about her worries one late, delirious night before she'd allowed herself to fall for him again.
i’m coming to you as a true girl’s girl to tell you that Katie and Susan are keeping a secret from you. they’re both pregnant and didn’t want to hurt your feelings by telling you … kinda sad isn’t it? that they can’t celebrate something because they’re scared of hurting your little feelings just because you can’t have a kid … such a shame.
"what? no, that's... that's not true." leanne frowns, shaking her head slowly. they told each other everything! from period cycles to play by plays of their day, there was no stone left unturned between the trio. "they'd tell me if they were." she says, though it's like she's saying it more to convince herself. was that why they were being so weird with her over brunch? because they had good news to share but were too scared to tell her? leanne would have been happy for them! sure, theo and her have been going through years of fertility issues. and sure, it's always been leanne's dream to raise a kid the same time as her bestest friends... but she wasn't heartless! she knew they couldn't control that. "and— if they were pregnant, i'd be happy for them!" but she's swallowing the lump in her throat and blinking the tears from her eyes and she has no idea whether she's more upset about the idea of her best friends fulfilling her dream without her or the fact that they withheld such great news from her. currently? it's the latter.

the cute baby giggles coming from the other table has leanne enveloped in a fog of melancholy, her heart aching for a time for when it'll be her turn. for when it was her and theo's child drawing fond attention and silly faces from strangers. for when it was their turn to show up to their friend's house, clearly tired from the sleepless nights of their baby crying, but saying something cheesy and knowing like 'i wouldn't trade my little one for the world'.
leanne inhales sharply, swallowing back the lump that was quickly forming in her throat. while she appreciates theo swapping seats to move closer to her, it makes the guilt rise quickly. there she goes again — bringing the mood down. she didn't even have to elaborate for theo to know exactly where her imagination took her. he just knew her too well.
"sorry." leanne mumbles, shaking her head. this was date night. it was meant to be fun! theo shouldn't be tasked with shouldering the weight of her grief all night. leanne forces out a small smile when he draws her hand to his lips. "yes, but it was hard to believe you when you said it the minute i crawled out of bed."

leanne can't even hide the shock on her face. reporters nowadays were cruel and ruthless, but this? this was... unlike any nosy attack she'd experienced before. maybe it was because she was extremely sensitive about the children topic, but even hearing a silly rumour about both her best friends being pregnant had nearly brought leanne to tears. "what?" leanne laughs nervously, trying to brush it off for what it surely was: a measly little rumour that had no basis in any truth! ... right? susan and katie wouldn't keep secrets from her, would they? they both knew she'd be happy for both of them if this were true, right? even if life and fate had decided to exclude her from something she'd always wanted — being pregnant at the same time as her best friends so their children could grow up together. "i'm not sure what you're talking about, or do i think it's any of your business if i'm pregnant or not anyway."

her cheeks warm at the memory of catching a glimpse of draco's journal. he really was a talented artist, even if her snooping had him rightfully upset with her. "why would that be creepy?" leanne asks, furrowing her brows. as far as everyone else knew, draco and her were dating. it shouldn't be creepy at all! ... not that she found it creepy because they weren't truly dating! she found it sweet more than anything. she was honoured to be a muse, even if it was just one drawing. "he's my boyfriend, isn't he? he's allowed to draw me whenever he likes."
