Q&A: Botanical Bunny
All the way from the USA, Kerri Ciullo is the hands, heart and soul behind @botanicalbunny. An artist and hand embroider inspired by the intricate beauty of the natural world and human vulnerability. Having grown up spending her time in nature, hand sewing and battling Lyme Disease; embroidery allows Kerri to express herself and her passion for drawing, painting, colour and nature all in one, using this as an outlet especially in difficult times. With a "goal to inspire others"Â you certainly inspire me, please read the interview below to get to know this botanical bunny a bit more!
Hi Kerri, can you introduce yourself for those who donât know you? Hey there, my name is Kerri Ciullo. I am also known on Instagram as âBotanicalbunnyâ. I am 23 years old, and I enjoy plants, animals, the outdoors, and creative expression. I am driven by empathy and a goal to inspire others. I live in the Northeastern United States and have a twin brother.Â
How did you get to where you are now? I was taught to hand sew at a fairly young age. Iâve also been interested in drawing and painting since childhood. Embroidery was a way for me to incorporate aspects of each medium into one form of expression. I have battled with chronic Lyme disease for most of my life. I have been in treatment for it for nearly the last four years; stitching has been a way for me to express myself during the hardest moments.Â
Do you remember the day you first picked up a needle and thread? And the first piece you created with it? As a child I used to love creating my own version of a needle and thread with a sturdy pine needle and long blades of scallion grass. I would sit in the grass, and attempt to stitch leaves together with my makeshift tools.
Who, what, when, where inspires you most? I am most inspired when I walk in nature. Especially when I am alone. I take my time to visit each little detail that catches my eye. There is so much beauty hidden around us. It just takes time and patience to notice it. I have also been very inspired by my own dreams. I have a very active imagination, and I find my subconscious mind is filled with colour and endless images.Â
Your work explores the âintricate beauty of the natural world and human vulnerabilityâ. Can you further why you have chosen to focus on these two aspects of life? I believe that I have chosen to focus on these two aspects of life because they have always played a large part in my own existence. Nature has always been a place of solace and acceptance for me. The one place where I felt safe, inspired, and free of judgement. We live in such a fast passed world that can be very callous and unappreciative of emotional vulnerability. It is often portrayed as weakness, which is entirely false. I personally believe that if more people felt that they could truly express their feelings, it could cause a shift in our society as a whole. In my work I want to create a new appreciation for this planet we live on and the beings we share it with.Â
What are your favourite materials to use and where do you buy them from? My all-time favourite flosses to use are by DMC. As for materials, I love to experiment with various fabrics. I generally find my materials at craft stores, through thrifting, and online.Â
How long does a piece take you to create and where does the magic happen? My embroideries really all vary in the amount of time they take. Though, I have definitely gotten faster in my stitching over the years. My favourite place to create is out on my patio, surrounded by my plants in the sunshine.Â
What do you love about textiles? I love how versatile textiles are. There are so many mediums and techniques. I also really appreciate how textiles make art wearable in everyday life.Â
What are you currently working on?
I am currently working on some custom orders and planning out some new ideas for Spring/Summer.Â
You take custom orders, what one has been a stand out? I do take custom orders. They are always really enjoyable for me. At times I have to step out of my comfort zone with certain requests. Though it can be a bit intimidating at first, it has definitely made me a stronger stitcher. Iâve recently had multiple requests for custom pet embroideries. They always warm my heart and make me feel even more connected to my supporters.Â
Dream person to collaborate with? Â My dream people to collaborate with are Susan Alexandra, and Samantha Pleet.Â
What does 2018 have in store for you? I am hoping that 2018 has some pleasant surprises. I am looking forward to new opportunities to expand as an artist.Â
Any works of advice? My words of advice would definitely be to always put out work that is original and feels true to yourself.Â

Q&A: NopeSisters
For those who havenât discovered NopeSisters Clothing⌠Letâs take it back to 2016 when the New Zealand based sisters Brit and Johanna founded its existence. Sparked by a simple idea of hand stitching a t-shirt to replicate the scars left behind from breast cancer treatment, in honour of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and inspired by their motherâs own battle. After sharing on social media, the response to the 'mastectotee' came rolling in by people across the globe, who were also keen to own, wear and share the message. Â
Continuing to make dope stuff for good causes; there are now five tees out in the world each embroidered with five designs across the chest in support of five charities that they hold close to their hearts. Having sold over 1200 shirts, the girls are working hard to keep on providing their chosen organisations with fundingâs, âItâs a great partnership -Â we make and market the tees, to financially assist the organisations we know can effect the positive social change we want to see.â
Letâs be real, these t-shirts are not only carrying powerful messages, raising money for some incredible charities but are also just damn right aesthetically pleasing (along with their Instagram) and the best part is they are for all genders. So be sure to grab yourself a tee or two and spread the word that these hard working sisters have created.  As Johanna says, âwe know that making a t-shirt might not change the world, but if it gives wearers some courage to speak out, or enables them to talk about the social issues attached to our design, then we are hopeful that, slowly, change can happen.â Also make sure to read the interview below to hear all about the journey of NOPESISTERS, in-depth detail behind each t-shirt and charity and some advice for those who have experienced or are suffering with mental health, cancer and/or sexual assault.Â
Hey Brit & Johanna, howâs life treating you? Hi! Good thanks, pretty hectic!
Focusing on you two, can you briefly introduce yourselves? Brittany is 24 and the co-founder and designer of NopeSisters Clothing. Johanna, aged 25, is a co-founder of Nopesisters Clothing, and also an actor and comedian (currently on tour with a solo show in Aus and NZ).
How did NopeSisters Clothing kickstart? Nopesisters was created after Brittany stitched the first design - The Mastectotee; which was made for Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2016 in honour of our Mum. We didnât realise at the beginning how much it would grow. The whole process has been very organic and weâve encountered some steep learning curves. It literally started with a hand stitched t-shirt and Instagram post -Â and now weâve sold over 1200 t-shirts in five designs all over the world.
This isnât any ordinary clothing brand, existing with a much deeper purpose. Can you further on your mission and what you are raising awareness of? NopeSisters exists as a Social Enterprise where we act as a conduit for important conversations around social issues that affect everyone. Our designs focus on a message that is important to us - with a logo or bold words stitched across the chest. These encourage people to talk about their tees, and wearers often get asked to explain what they are wearing. We sell our fashion for a cause. We are partnered with 5 different and incredible charities, each represented by a different design. These organisations do outstanding work in our local community - we work with and support CanSurvive Breast Cancer Dragon Boat Team, Wellington Sexual Abuse Help, the WÄ Collective, Youthline Wellington and the Sexual Abuse Prevention Network. Itâs a great partnership - we make and market the tees, to financially assist the organisations we know can affect the positive social change we want to see.
How is it all going so far/have you had a positive response? The response has been overwhelmingly sensational. Social media has been a very important tool for us in terms of connecting with people globally. The supportive community that has established itself around NopeSisters is a beautiful thing. We have so many friends and collaborators who support what we do, and offer their photography and design services for free, so that we have more profit left for our charities. Itâs also exciting seeing people on the street wearing the tees and having important conversations around sexual abuse, breast cancer or period poverty simply because they wear NopeSisters clothing.
When someone purchases a tee the money is going to a good cause, can you explain how this works? Once all costs are deducted we share our profits directly with the corresponding charity linked to each t-shirt's message. This is the ethos of a true social enterprise. The Mastectotee profits go to CanSurvive, the Nope Tee goes to Wellington Sexual Abuse Help, the Period Tee goes to WÄ Collective (who provide subsidised, sustainable menstrual cups to tertiary students) the Nope for Hope tee goes to Youthline's teen counselling services and the #MeWeToo t-shirt profits are split between Sexual Abuse Prevention Network and Sexual Abuse Help.
There are two items that stand out for me, one being the NOPE tee and the other the MastectoTee. Why did you create these in particular? The NOPE tee was created to create awareness around healthy relationships and kick start extremely important conversations around consent. Having directly experienced sexual abuse and harassment this was very close to the heart for us and especially in the wake of the #mewetoo movement. The MastectoTee was created to celebrate and normalise the scars of Breast Cancer Survivors and was created in honour of our mother who is a Breast Cancer survivor herself. The logo is based on her surgery scar.In the beginning Brittany hand stitched each t-shirt but due to the demand we outsourced the stitching to a local Wellington Embroidery company A1 Embroidery and Apparel, who replicated her hand stitching.
You call your products âdope stuffâ any reason behind this? And can they be purchased offline? We want our products to be relevant and wearable. Our ethos reflects us and is indicative of a fierce attitude that is definitely a family trait. We occasionally do stalls and charity events but each of our t-shirts is custom made to order. This is especially important for the mastectotee because wearers want their scar stitched on the relevant side, or double scars for a double mastectomy.
Do you have any advice for those suffering with mental health, experienced sexual assault and/or dealing with cancer? There is incredible help out there - donât be afraid to reach out. Sexual Abuse Help and Youthline especially provide direct counselling services that are very accessible. The Cancer Society is an amazing resource, and for survivors who want to thrive - the international sport of dragon boating offers amazing health and well-being benefits to thousands of breast cancer survivors around the world. Looking after yourself and what you need most important and make sure you have a strong support network.
What does 2018 have in store for you? We have some very exciting collaborations and more tee designs with strong social messages in the pipeline - so stay tuned!

INTRODUCING: MOSS FOLK
TODAY is the day MOSS FOLK has launched its website into the world. With three interviews already up make sure to head on over to read the stories of three wonderful women, (trigger warning: some articles contain references to suicide and self-harm).Â
Moss Folk exists as a community service, providing support to those suffering with mental health but everyone is welcome, âbuilt on the principles of community, creativity and open and honest communication,â expect to see stories, journeys, personal experiences, workshops and events. Â
Run by Sam Moss, a 23-year-old juggling her own life, she has taken the time to create a safe space for others to âconnect, share, create and heal,â in response to having dealt with mental illness herself.
I can honestly say that Moss Folk has already wrapped me up in its arms and comforted me, popping up at a time in my life when I needed that extra boost of comfort and inspiration. Read the interview below to hear about Sam's personal experience with mental health, advice for those suffering and supporting, the importance of human interaction and what's in store for Moss Folk.Â
Hi Sam, how is 2018 treating you? Hi!! 2018 so far has been very overwhelming but in the best possible way.
What are you currently doing? I recently quit my 9-5 retail job to study Art Therapy and launch my business, Mossfolk. I am currently trying to juggle my studies and plan workshops and events.
Can you introduce yourself? My name is Samantha Moss, I am a 23 years old country gal living in Melbourne. I love arts & crafts, op shopping, 80âs films and most importantly my cat Marcie!
And Introducing MOSS FOLK to the world, where did the name derive from and for those who donât know, why did you start Moss Folk? Mossfolk originated as a direct result of my personal experience with mental illness. After struggling through quite a severe depression I came out the other side wanting to not only have survived but to be able to use my experience to help others going through similar situations. Mossfolk is a community for people with mental illness created by someone with mental illness (me) and I wanted the name to reflect that.
From personal experience juggling work-life, social-life and me-time, how are you finding it all? And do you have any advice for those in similar positions? To be honest I am still figuring out how to balance everything currently going on in my life. For me the best way to stay on top of everything is to schedule my weeks, days and even hours. I am really not in a position to give advice on this topic (if anything I need advice!) but I would encourage taking time out for regular self-care, whatever that may be for you. I think that âwork/life balanceâ is an unattainable concept put on women and really we can just do the best we can and be kind to ourselves.
Focusing on Mental Health which you have been dealing with, can you share a little bit about your own personal experience? I was diagnosed with depression and generalised anxiety in 2015. I went through a really tough couple of years during which I completely isolated myself and struggled to do day to day things. I now consider myself mostly recovered thanks to a combination of medication, making healthy lifestyle choices, or trying to, and therapy. However, I still have ups and downs, good days and bad days.
I can already tell that Moss Folk is going to be a great network of support from your existing Instagram posts. Can you share with us how you aim to provide support? Mossfolk will provide holistic workshops centered around improving mental health. Through our workshops and events, I aim to provide a safe, nurturing space that encourages open communication, creativity as an outlet and the healing effects of nature. The workshops and events will vary in content such as arts & crafts, movement, nutrition, discussions etc. Mossfolk will also provide a sense of community and social connection to those who may be feeling lonely or isolated.
Can you share a few tips/advice on self-care for those suffering with mental illness? For me self-care is all about being kind to yourself and putting your mental health first. Self-care is different for each individual and itâs important to understand what you need to nurture your mental health. For example, I have come to understand that every now and then I need to slow my life down and I have come to terms with that. I believe that self-care is perfectly summarised in artist Frances Cannons Self Love Club rules âYou must always show yourself respect, love, forgiveness and understanding. You must show each other respect, love forgiveness and understanding. You must be kind to your body and you must take care of your mental health.â
And for those that support the ones dealing with mental health? I have not only suffered from mental illness myself but have had numerous friends and family members around me suffer. When supporting loved ones with mental illness it is important to remember that the recovery process is different for everyone and it is important to come from a place of patience and kindness. However, a lesson I have learnt the hard way is that you can only help people who are willing to help themselves. My advice would be to encourage them to seek professional help and be there to support them through that process.
I LOVE and appreciate that youâre running holistic workshops and events (keep your eyes peeled everyone), when is the next workshop/event and what can we expect these to involve? Thank you! Our next event will be a collaging workshop held on March 25th which has unfortunately sold out. We are currently planning workshops based around yoga & dance, nutrition, floristry, weaving and many other craft activities. So keep an eye on our social media for more info!
What are your future goals personally and for Moss Folk? My short term goals for Mossfolk are to hold as many creative workshops and events as possible, and to collaborate with other creatives and local businesses. Long term I would love to have a permanent space for Mossfolk in Melbourne and to hold workshops and events interstate. My personal goals are to stay on top of my mental health, complete my Art Therapy studies and to enjoy the many wonderful things currently happening in my life.
Your view on the Importance of human interaction. Human interaction is incredibly important in promoting good mental health. Human connection and social interaction actually calms the nervous system. Something as small as making eye contact with someone, a comforting physical touch or or having a quick phone conversation with with a friend can change your state from negative to positive. Human beings thrive in communities, however these daysâ loneliness and isolation is very common. With Mossfolk I hope to create a community who support and encourage each other.
Any final words? Just that the current success of Mossfolk was very unexpected so thank you to everyone who has shown me support and love xx

Hey Imi! How's 2018 treating you? Pretty good love!
What's been happening over the last few months? I was a part of an exhibition for a youth mental health organisation called âOne eightyâ in Sydney Northern Beaches where I exhibited large scale paintings of nudes then headed to Melbourne with my boyfriend. Had a sick time down there but wasnât creating any content to be honest. Left Melbourne and came back up to Sydney to start shooting again and be with family!
For those who donât know you, can you share a little bit about yourself? My name is Imogen Murray and I am 20 years old. I grew up and currently live on Pittwater, NSW. I go by Imogen.Ivy as I was going to be called Ivy as a child. I started making films in High School and am studying at AFTRS (Australian Film Television Radio School) out at Fox Studios. Ultimately I want to direct documentaries in the future. The last few years I have focused on body image and self-love in my photography and art life outside of university and high school.
When and why did you branch off and start up humans of the nude? The account I made early 2015 but disabled it for a year as I was more focused on producing films; I started it back up a year ago and began to produce content. I used it at first to store my nude loving stills, now it has evolved into a portfolio for customers and companies to look at.
The notion of âmore to loveâ is evident and consistent throughout your nude loving stills, which I am a BIG fan of! What sparked you to focus on this? âMore to loveâ started when I was doing Year 12 HSC art. I was tiny which was not normal to my big body build like I was as a child and am now. I had lost all this weight in hope to be more loved (very stupid). As I hit my lowest weight I hit this realisation that I would be loved at any size. I began to paint voluptuous nudes from life drawing which was my HSC art major work and then eventually started taking stills of nudes of other people⌠All focusing on self-love, body appreciation and the beauty of human form.
The connection between you and your images to me are very deep as they are meaningful; with romanticised content, a sense of freedom and endless love. What continues to drive you to create this way? As lame as it sounds, passion really drives me. I grew up in a nudist household so it was all I really knew growing up; being nude openly was always the norm. I think romance and freedom is so important to have in life also. To be in love with yourself, others and your surroundings is key to being happy, well at least thatâs what I believe. Iâve been so fortunate to have had a lot of freedom and trust from my parents growing up. Theyâve really let me do my own thing from a young age and brought me up with a lot of travel, which yes, means a lot of galleries. At one point I went to 32 galleries in under 6 weeks whilst travelling around Europe with my Mum. I matured early from having older sisters and having open minded parents. Theyâre probably the coolest people I know â so laidback and loving. I do think this comes out in my art.
Biggest inspiration/influence behind your work? Spencer Tunick who does mass nudity and Helmut Newton who does more classical, high class nude work. Both big inspirations.
Dream person you would love to shoot, and why? Frances Canon comes to mind. Iâm all for what she's about; a Melbourne based feminist who draws big body nudes. She flaunts what sheâs got and I feel as though it would be a joy to shoot her as she is SO comfortable with-in her own skin.
What does the future have in store for you? I go back to Uni in July after taking a year off. Late June I am heading to Europe to visit some friends. At the moment I'm just really shooting as much as possible. I am selling 200 prints at a Design House in Balmain, message me for more details! A few tattoos planned and just exploring Australia as much as possible.
A little birdy told me you will be holding an exhibition in the near future, can you enlighten us what this will entail and give us any hints about the who, what, where, when? Yes, I am! June 8th (Opening Night!) to the 22nd in Balmain at PennyFarthing Design House. An event will come out closer to the date. All Welcome! I will be selling 25 nude body loving prints.
It is clear that self-love, self-compassion and body positivity is very important to you, do you have any tips on how you practice this yourself? I have been so many different sizes throughout my 20 years. Not comparing yourself to others and just generally being happy as much as possible really helps, you then don't worry about your body type. This is kinda weird but if I'm having a really shit day I sometimes use sarcasm as a tool. I just laugh at myself until I stop worrying about things not really fitting or if I'm just having a low self-esteem day. Buying nice lingerie is fun too (not for anyone else, just for you), Itâs good to feel sexy every so often.
Any final advice? Do what you want and do it when you can. Do it BIG!

I choose to follow a creative path in life, and on this path I have been fortunate enough to discover, connect and meet various talent that continue to inspire me. Amongst many is one soul in particular; Emma Hakansson, who popped up on my Instagram page and left an imprint in my mind. Emma is not only an emerging and talented model but an artist pursuing her own creative life, doing her little bit to make the world a brighter place through animal activism and speaking up, "Don't let people step on you - do no harm but take no shit."Â
Recently Emma spoke up and shared her own personal experience dealing with sexual assault and female discomfort in the fashion industry.* These situations are never and will never be okay and I among many are very proud of Emma for sharing her story. Thank you for speaking up and I hope that this will give strength to those that have had to deal with similar abusive behaviour, harassment and assault.
âSilence only ever benefits the oppressor. Sexual assault thrives in darkness, behind closed doors, in unspoken secrets. But no more. In order to create a safe world in the fashion industry, in all industries, we must speak up when something is wrong. I want to live in a world, work in an industry, where speaking up and demanding safety is expected, rather than seen as taboo.â

Hey! What are you currently doing? At the moment Iâm in my gap year! Next year Iâm going to be doing Global Studies at Monash, which may take me into working in foreign aid, but not yet. This year Iâm going to be focussing on modelling; Iâll be spending some time in Sydney working, and hopefully in other places too. I also am spending more time doing activism, and hopefully making art.
How has 2018 been treating you? Despite some lows, I am feeling so grateful for this year so far as with it has come freedom, now that Iâm out of high school. I feel like I have so many paths I can take, which is a little daunting but the amount of opportunity is very exciting.
Can you share a little bit about yourself? What do you want to know?! Iâm vegan (of course the first thing I say), Iâm half Swedish, at the moment Iâm enjoying writing poetry, I think crying is an important part of life, I love crystals, being in nature and mango.
How did you get into the modelling world? A lot of people seem to have fancy stories where they were âdiscoveredâ on the street, but not me! I decided I wanted to get into modelling so I found out who the best agencies were, sent them some photos of me, and went from there. A few years later I got street cast anyway, but I was already on the modelling train
You recently made an important post addressing sexual abuse in the industry from your own personal experience. This is an extremely serious matter; can I ask when this happened in your modelling career and how do you now feel after sharing this? It happened very recently, in the last month. I feel empowered having given myself a voice. In silence this sort of abuse thrives, and so too does misplaced victim guilt. Speaking up was therapeutic for me personally, but also something I wanted to do to encourage others to do the same â to tell someone they trusted, to make a statement to the police. To not let abusers get away with their actions. The responses Iâve gotten from people with similar experiences have been bitter sweet, and I hope that the post will continue to create conversation that will not allow this side of the industry to stay in the dark.
When did you decide to tell the world what happened to you? I told my Mum the next day, then a friend, and then a few days later my agent. By the time I had spoken to my agent I knew I wanted to disrupt the silence. I wasnât going to let my fear stop me from potentially protecting other people from the same kind of violation.
Hopefully together we can help others and put a stop to sexual assault. Is there any advice you can give to those that are still in the dark? To anyone that has experienced sexual assault, I am so tremendously sorry. It is not your fault, and all shame and blame lies with the perpetrator. Though not everyone may feel able to, I would urge anyone currently staying silent to speak up. Even if it is slowly. Tell your dog before you work up to speaking to a human. We are so lucky to live in a country where police will take your statement about sexual assault, to have the opportunity to speak up about issues, to have your voice be heard. Though I understand that some people feel unable to speak up, please know that if you do, you are helping to protect everyone around you, and that is an amazing thing to come from something terrible.
You are clearly fighting back but of course this has affected you; can you further on this? I had felt a little nervous doing the first shoots after that one, but I certainly wonât let what happened stop me from doing anything. In fact, it makes me want to work harder and push and help create an industry that is positive and supportive. It has made me more cautious which isnât bad, itâs just a fine line between being cautious, and letting past experiences stop you from making the most of the present.
On a positive note, your images are truly beautiful, they always seem to catch my eye. What has been your favourite shoot to date? Thank you! Hmmm. Biggest inspiration/influence? Hmmm. Anyone who has made positive change in the world, created something, and done so with an open and kind heart. In my head currently, Rupi Kaur, Adwoa Aboah, Oprah, Malala Yousafzai.
Artist (past or present) that you would love to work alongside? Louise Bourgeois, Tracey Emin, Jenny Holzer, Sarah Sitkin.
A little birdy told me that you create some of your own artworks, can you share with us? Well! Later in March youâll be able to see one of my works in NGV at Fed Square⌠but for now Iâll say that Iâve shared bits and pieces on my Instagram, and spent the last two years at the Victorian College of the arts secondary school, spending much of my time studying and practising art.
What does the future have in store for you? So many possibilities! Itâs both exciting and terrifying. Modelling, travelling with that, more animal activism, more activism of other sorts, publishing some things, art making, fostering, creating, studying.

Hey! Howâs 2018 treating you so far? Â Â Â Â SUPER DUPER. This year is gonna be my year I can feel it in my hair.
 Whatâs the name you go by?
     Ellie. Or my girlfriend calls me Gabby Goo ;)
 Where are you currently based?
     Gold Coast, QLD.
 How did you get to where you are now?
     Consistency and not giving up! It took a long timeâŚ
 Can you briefly outline a typical day for you?
     Go to the gym, eat, doodle some weird things, pack orders, go to the post office, draw some more, eat a bit more, maybe see a friend or my mum, sleep. Very interesting I know ;)
 Do you remember your first artwork?
     Yes! It was a small lady with a bob saying "just relax", I even made it into a shirt which I still have somewhere.
 Letâs take it back to when â@shuturpâ began.
     About 3 years ago now! I just made an Instagram for somewhere to keep my artwork; I didn't really think much of it until I started getting more and more followers! I never thought this would be my job that's for sure.
 I see the existence of your work as a fun, artistic way to get across some straight up truthful aspects of life⌠Is this similar to why you started creating?
     When I started all of this I wasn't in the best headspace so it was a way for me to escape. Then I realised that if it helped me it could probably help other people too and that's why a lot of my art is about life and its ups and downs. đ
 Who, what, where inspires you most?
     Most of my artwork is based on myself or people that I meet in my life. If I'm feeling like a bag of poo I will draw a bag of poo and post it and hope other bag of poo's know that they're not alone.
 You just released new shirts (which are rad!), what else can we expect to see this year?
      I am going to be bringing out more t-shirts, jumpers, hats, pants (I hope) and probably some more socks!
 What does the future have in store for you?
      I am hoping to have my label in stores across Australia and eventually have my own store one day, maybeâŚ
 Ever done an exhibition?
     No! But that is another thing I plan to do this year.
 Your favourite artwork and/or favourite quote?
     Any artwork by filthyratbag/ marc johns / lianafinck and probably many more but I just woke up and my brain is broken.
 Tips for emerging/existing creatives.Â
     Just do what YOU wanna do. Don't try and please everyone and don't do anything that doesn't sit well with you. Don't give up either! If this is really what you want, you'll make it work. đ

Artist of the Week: Jellan Merlant-Pilonchery

You may know him as the guy who shoots nude women and even wonder how the hell he got that gig but truth be told Jellan Merlant-Pilonchery has built himself from the ground up and is one hundred percent dedicated to his work. Having established his own business titled âClash Studioâ this young motivated individual is smashing through life; sunny side up.
More than just a photographer and filmmaker Jellan exists to capture and create moments so raw, alluring and of course tasteful that no image is or can be seen the same. With a unique approach to his creative direction and ability to visually express something so moving through every single shot has left this lively spirit humbled by the response to his work.
Exploring Australia and the World has seen Jellan come alive in diverse opportunities and experiences; unleashing consistent art, photos and film in collaboration with numerous brands. With a strong vision and a clear mindset, I am truly inspired by JMP and Clash Studio.
With too many questions flying through my head I tried to cover what weâre all thinking about this longhaired ball of talent. And if his answers are anything to go off, you will realise just how genuine, thoughtful and dedicated Jellan is.Â
Hey Jellan, how you going? Iâm feeling lively. Can you briefly outline a typical day for you? If Iâm not on a shoot, thereâs a high chance Iâm in the office at home editing. Generally, Iâll get up at 7-7:30, head to the beach for a swim and a lay in the sun. I donât feel human unless I start my day with a dip in the ocean. There Iâll have a read and catch up on emails on my phone. Then itâs back home to edit, admin, chase invoices before the next job... Sometimes a sneaky arvo shoot. When did you first pick up a camera? About 4-5 years ago. Have you always wanted to be a photographer? Not really, I sort of just fell into it. I took photography as a subject at school mostly to pass the time but I basically failed the class.
How did your business name Clash Studio come about? I realised that my name was just too long to run with, âJellan Merlant-Pilonchery photography and filmâ just didnât have much of a ring to it so I needed to find a name that I liked and that people would remember easily. I thought of âClashâ on the basis that my work was âClashingâ with the norm or with whatever else was out there, I also realised early on that a brand name doesnât necessarily have to mean anything beyond how you identify with it. So I stuck with it and âClash filmsâ changed to âClash Studioâ to incorporate the photo aspect of my business too. What drew you to your ethos and for those that donât know can you further what that exactly is? The idea is still to create content which âClashesâ from the norm; whether that comes in the form of fashion/portraiture or via traditional corporate, branding, tourism work (clients and the public want to see things done differently and from a fresh perspective). Of course, there is an entire uprising of incredible talent and I donât consider myself above anyone, Iâm still just learning and coming into my own but I believe that everything is evolving so quickly now. On the fashion side of things, I always want to put women in a position of utmost power. After all they own the moment. I like the images to look raw but with a stylistic approach to them as well so that people see my work and identify it as mine I suppose. Your photographs are honestly beautiful. Capturing emotions and with a strong aesthetic how do you think you have evolved since starting out and where do you see yourself in the future? Thankyou! Purely and simply, when I started my shots were just terrible. Thatâs fully to be expected I suppose, but I hated them. Over time Iâve just learnt to be more accepting of my work and not shred it to pieces. Iâve let go of the idea of ârulesâ in photography and film and because of that I think itâs helped me create a sense of identity in what I do. I do however want to put way more energy into film and video again, not listen to critics and instead explore every facet of my creativity with a focus on work/human beings that are story driven. From project conception to the final product I just want to improve everyday and push it to the next level.Â
You have built a career from taking alluring images and film; can you explain what itâs like living this lifestyle? Every single day is like starting a new job. You work with different teams, challenge yourself and step out of your comfort zone. It can be high stress as regardless of the conditions youâre working in clients expect a result. I love it but itâs definitely not all glitz and glamour. Thereâs a lot of long hours editing behind a screen, thinking up projects and shots, seeking ways to improve and create something meaningful for clients and the public. But at the end of the day I have no one to really answer to, I make the calls and if everything goes wrong I have no one but myself to blame really hahaha.Â
You have accumulated a large social following, would you say this was a slow process or more of a âhappened over nightâ thing? Iâm not sure⌠Iâm more of a tiny fish in a really big pond. Itâs definitely been unbelievably slow thought; I think itâs harder as a content creator to get it overnight. Plus Instagram have made it near impossible to grow organically so mineâs been on standstill for months. Shoutout to insta. You have had the opportunity to travel around the world, from this can you name a favourite shoot to date? There are a lot of super memorable ones but my favourite has to be the campaign I shot for Sunday Somewhere in Morocco. It was so special. The biggest inspiration and motivation behind your work? For stills, Neave Bozorgi has always been the man, along with a heap of others. For film, classic DPâs like Roger Deakins and Kate Arizmendi, who a friend showed me recently. Thereâs a lot of local talent out there who really inspire me as well. Dream person to shoot (past or present)? This oneâs really hard. Rita Hayworth always blew me way. Grace Jones, Bridget Bardot, Queen Moss, Em Rata, Emma Bella. Black and white or colour? I love colour but B&W has dominated my portfolio for the past year. I think it helps people feel more with less distraction. Any final words? Never stop seeking. Be inspired by others, not threatened. Take the time to listen. Donât ever let anyone tell you that this industry is âtoo competitiveâ or âyou wonât make it.â They failed with that mindset, doesnât mean you have to as well. Be friendly to everyone however, donât let people walk all over you because regardless of how good your intentions are â people will take the piss.

Hey Lenni! What are you doing right now? Hey! Just sat down with a beer.
Can you share a little bit about yourself? I'm 19 and just moved to the inner west of Sydney with my dog Scout and spend most of my time making stuff... My favourite media at the moment would have to be photography but i do really enjoy to paint; its like a treat for me to do something with my hands over a computer.
You go by the nickname âBattyâ, how did this come about? OH sooo my first tattoo... I didn't know what i wanted so i just got a fruit bat on my leg.
What do you love about graphic design? Being able to communicate visually;Â words have never been my strong point as I have dyslexia.Â
Aside from being a graphic designer, your photographs and drawings are next level. Where did you learn to draw/take photos or did it come naturally to you? I've always loved making stuff with my hands, it came easy to me. When i was growing up i always felt shit with how i did at school. Having trouble reading and writing made me feel useless and dumb, I was pretty depressed about it growing up and always felt ashamed but being able to take photos and draw really helped, it made me feel good about myself and not feel so useless.Â
If you had to compare your style of work to a colour, which would it be? Would have to be baby pink -Â its just a sweet colour. Â Â
Artist (past or present) that you would love to work alongside? Great question. Funny enough Jenny Holzer; most of her works involve words with visuals
Biggest influence/inspiration? The 60s, mundane objects, social constructs.
Your Instagram page is a beautiful collection of your life and work, whatâs your favourite piece? I don't really have a favourite I'm only ever happy with work for five minutes then I'm bored of it but if i had to pick it would have to be the first thing i can remember drawing in kindergarten;Â it was a self portrait and it was messy but you could tell it was me!
Future Goals? To have enough works to have a show.Â

Interview - Jesse Porsches
JESSE PORSCHES: ON BREAKING OUT SOLO & THE BIG NAMES BEHIND HIM
Coming in hot! We caught up with Sydney DJ and producer Jesse Porsches before the drop of his new single The Weekend (ft. Xavier Dunn, out today) we delved into the past and future projects of this thriving human â including the launch of his second duo Super Cruel â and the announcement of going solo.
âI started in high school playing guitar and drums but not taking it seriously. I was coming last in the class and eventually just dropped out of music altogether. The teacher hated me and I couldnât even tune a guitar!â Jesse Sewell laughs. âI still feel like Iâm not that good at music, some of my friends are freaks and just play the piano like Mozart!â
Kick-starting his career about two years ago with Carl Fox, his first duo â known simply as Porsches â saw the act collaborate with some incredible artists, including Flume, he wrote Sleepless for. Taking things to the next level, opening up opportunities and exploring new avenues and sounds, Sewell recently launched Super Cruel, his second duo with Adelaideâs Tigerilla (aka Matthew Khabbaz). âMatt and I put out our first song November [featuring Lisa Mitchell] which has been getting beaten up on the jâs, so thatâs pretty cool. And then weâve got our second single thatâs getting mixed at the moment,â adds Sewell, referencing The Weekend which was unleashed this morning.Â
Sewell shares âI am a huge fan of Lisaâs, so I was so nervous and then she brought Isabella Lucas with her to the studio! It was crazy and semi-stressful âcause we did a photo shoot and I was so unprepared, but a really great time!â
Stepping into the spotlight by rebranding Porsches to Jesse Porsches as a solo project, he explains âIâve stopped doing Porsches and am now just focusing on myself. Iâve got my first single out really soon which I am super excited about! Itâs not even out here yet but has been picked up across the globe including the States, UK, Sweden, Netherlands and South Africa â places Iâve never even been to so I canât wait to see the reactions.â
Recently signing to Dew Processes/UMA at home and Astral Works in the US, Sewell enthuses âAstral Works kind of had the final say and it was the very original demo they liked the most⌠I think itâs best not to copy the sound thatâs popular at the moment, but try and make it your own and in your own way!â With a total of 40 versions (give or take) Sewell is pretty proud of his final piece and with nothing holding him back he is still keeping things spicy solo by collaborating with numerous artists such as featured vocalist Xavier Dunn. âIlly came down to write and we had a rapper at one point from New York, which we have since taken off, but itâs been a long process and the song has gone in numerous directions.â
Putting his time to good use as, at the time of the interview, âThe release keeps moving back meaning a lot of waiting around so I canât wait to share it with the world,â Sewell has been keeping busy working on some new remixes for your ear drums (Hint: anyone a fan of Major Laser?) âIâm still writing every day but youâll have to be patient too as I want to release these first [singles] and wait for the response and evolve from that.â
With regards to The Weekend, he shares âItâs really easy to listen to with a catchy chorus, so I think various people will get into it, which is probably why itâs doing so well overseas.â Plus, thereâs a rad cinema-worthy video clip to feast your eyes on too. Produced by the Jaen Collective video team and shot at Burleigh Heads in Queensland, Sewell exclaims âIt looks like something out of transformers, the lead actually looks like Megan Fox!â
Donât freak out, but Super Cruel will be playing at Splendour In The Grass this year, so thereâs a chance for everyone to hear their second single that is actually being released a week afterSplendour. âThey are both my babies⌠I donât see it as the songs competing but people will either like one or the other so weâll see what happens.â Comparing his sound to pizza â preferably margarita or Hawaiian â he laughs âAs long as someone likes one of them Iâm going to be happy.â

Review - Meg Mac
What a time to be alive, soaking up the sweet sounds of Meg Macâs forthcoming debut album Low Blows. This highly anticipated release is set to connect with souls far and wide as Megan McInerney journeys her way between America and Australia. Revealing to her devoted following earlier this year that the record was actually done and dusted last November, the albumâs glowing, raw tracks are guaranteed to get stuck in your head â which it might well do before itâs released thanks to being triple jâs feature album this week!
Bouncing back into our lives with the powerful release of lead single Low Blows, tied in with a magically composed videoclip, the singer-songwriter has executed a pure, real, and inspiration collection. Working alongside duo Austin Jenkins and Josh Block of Niles City Sound studios in Fort Worth, Texas, (if the black and white music video for Low Blow is anything to go off) the space is like a vintage dreamland, perfectly suited to McInerneyâs sage vibes. McInerney finished the record whilst hanging out at Niles City Sound along with producing the homemade-style clip, heartwarmingly fitted to the soulful harmonies of her voice.  and catchy, up-beat gems to fulfil your 2017.
This skilful lyricist delved yet again into a sensitive yet powerful side executed by her strong vocals on the title track: âYou coming round too late / Iâve taken off my face and you wonât like it.â As she revealed in an interview with LunchBox, the song is about wanting to stand up for herself and deals with all the little things that everyday life can throw.
McInerney has also made a bold move to include three live tracks of some of her best-known songs â Every Lie, Never Be and Saint Philomene, which initially wasnât going to make the album despite being a live favourite. The power in her vulnerability through this inclusion also means a stronger connection when listening, creating an atmosphere of almost being at one of her live shows!
The empowering singer has also treated her devoted fans to another dreamy, pop-beat tune Maybe Itâs My First Time. Her storytelling ability has hit the home run here in terms of relatability, creating a strong connection between artist and audience through her alluring vocal harmonies, smooth sound and nostalgic undertones; qualities you can expect to hear across all tracks.
Standouts also include the opener Grace Gold, putting things into perspective for the rest of the album. McInerney may have held back on instrumentation, prefering to keep it simple, but she sure has delivered, putting her dynamic voice and piano skills to good use and creating a melodic loveliness that consumes you, leaving you wanting more.
Low Blows is going to hit the hearts and minds of music fans worldwide, with more toe-tapping goodness released just in time for her appearance at Splendour In The Grass⌠And on that note, I hope you all purchased tickets âcause this soul sister is going to be playing on the final day! Interview - Tasmin Witkamp
TASMIN HANNAH WITKAMP ARTIST Twenty Three, Scorpio
With a love for oil painting, her heritage and nature⌠Meet Tasmin (Taz) Witkamp â an emerging artist behind the revolutionary oil paintings, âIf Iâm painting Iâm happy, Iâll never stop regardless if itâs my job or notâ expresses Tasmin. Â
Growing up on Sydneyâs, Northern Beaches firstly in Narrabeen and then moving to a treehouse scaped home and historic property known as âHy-Brasilâ; Tasmin spent her childhood nestled between two sisters, one older and one younger âIâve always loved painting, nature and the outdoors⌠I struggled to sit in front of the TV, I always had to be making things,â she shares. With a great freedom given to this talent since she was young, spending time at her second home down the South Coast where she could roam, explore, and make an (artistic) mess, Taz muses âOne thing that stands out down there is that itâs not as civilised but instead so raw, energetic and fun; I did a lot of painting here, we could make a lot more mess than back at home in Narra.â
Being the fourth generation to carry on this powerful artistic ability there is a lot of pressure on Tazâs shoulder, âIt is both daunting and exciting to see where my style will goâ she states. Sharing the studio space with her mother Nada Herman which was also previously used by her grandfather Ted Herman and great grandfather Sali Herman; a very well know Australian War Artist, âLiving on Ruskin Rowe, he was known as the crazy old guy who kept peacocks and catsâ laughs Taz. Passing away when she was born Taz never got to meet Sali but he still holds a special place in her heart and mind being the biggest inspiration of all, âHe taught both my Mum and her Father to paint passing down his skills and knowledge to each generation⌠Itâs funny because even though he isnât present his influence on me is so strong,â she furthers. Hy-Brasilâs existence is the core of all inspiration as Taz conveys, âThis property meaning Garden of Eden inspired them all immensely highlighted throughout their paintings. It is interesting to see that all those years later mum and I still use the same inspirations and it is an honour to paint where they derived their artworks from.â
In the final year of high school Taz was shortlisted into Art Express for her major work also being her favourite artwork to date, âThis was the first artwork I dedicated more than the âIt will do stageâ something my mum is trying to carve into my brainâ she acknowledges. Delving further into her artistic path by undergoing a Bachelor of Fine Arts Taz reflects on her journey there, âCOFA was difficult and confronting of what Art is now and what people associate with it⌠Itâs all very much temporary which is great as we do have to find new ways to evolve art to keep itself alive and I think itâs really healthy for humanity to have ways to express themselves but people need to remember there is still room for traditional methods like painting.â
Working in the creative industry today requires support and in Tazâs case working at a cafĂŠ to fund her art, âOn days off I work in the studio around three-four times a week, once Iâm in there I donât really leaveâ she admits⌠âYou canât touch your phone because there is paint everywhere making it like a sanctuary and you canât just jump up and fix something quickly either, youâre in there for the whole day and night!â With a found desire for capturing figures, nature and still life, this free spirit is continuously learning and exploring new techniques âI feel like I always have something to learn with Life Drawing; the anatomy of a womanâs body fascinates me and Its not until you understand how the body works that you can properly make a figure sit right in a composition,â she adds âThe texture really makes it for me as well being a big reason why I love oil paint.â Â
With a dream to work in Western Australia due to its resemblance of the South Coast yet unknown territory, travelling isnât unfamiliar to this beauty furthering her explorations later this year, âIâm heading to âThe Pickers Hutâ a sculpture studio in Glaziers Bay, Tasmania with Matt Calvert in mid-September for two weeksâ explains Taz. Scoring a residency, sheâll be venturing out alone to try her skill at sculpting amongst a beautiful, isolated surrounding as she extends, âIâll be driving down to the bottom of Tasmania to an indulgent creative space, Iâm really interested to see how I can be transportable with my artworks!â Lengthening her travels to a month of solitude Taz illuminates, âBeing in your own head is a healthy thing to do sometimes, a chance to cleanse your thoughts and refresh where youâre at.â Â
For the time being this paint brush wizard is entering the Archibald along with numerous other competitions including: NSW Parliament Plein Air Painting Prize, Mosman Art Prize and Paddington Art Prize. Also looking into studying an Art Therapy Course in Byron, Tasmin herself making subconscious decisions when painting has helped her get through her own ups and downs, she enlightens âBeing a form of counselling that doesnât involve over analysing or âfixingâ the problem; using art to heal, a healthy distraction where those with social disorders, trauma, stress or anyone that just needs to express, a path to follow or wind down can return to a childlike state and recover in their own way and time.â

Interview - Alyce Eden
ALYCE (A-LEACE) EDEN:Â PAINTER, MAKER, PICTURE TAKER Twenty Four
The nurturing and determined qualities of Capricorn beam out of this powerful soul; with a love for creating, nature and travel⌠Meet Alyce Eden who lives for the art of life, âIâm the happiest when creating and editingâ shares Alyce.
About a week ago on a refreshing rainy Sunday morning Alyce and I embarked on a little exploration, sharing life stories whilst she captured me on her camera, I interviewing her⌠Back in the days of high school when we were young and naĂŻve, Alyce much like myself spent the better half of her days covering her work books with doodles, as she expresses âI wasnât very good in school, always drawing and fiddling.â Like a flame always burning to create Alyce did whatever she could to turn this interest of hers, or as teachers viewed it âunproductiveâ into a job. From here she has expressed herself in numerous art forms including: painting, photography, typography, design, styling or any medium really that she can get her hands on turning it into a piece of art.
Picking up a camera a little over five years ago Alyce delved into yet another artistic path on her journey, as she states âI have always been an artist and painter but when I was nineteen and working in childcare I decided I wanted to do photography.â Undergoing an Associates Degree of Arts (Visual Communication) whilst remaining to work in childcare this talent expresses her desire to be a freelancer âI love it; being around kids you realise how much they appreciate the little things but Iâve come to a point where I need a job thatâs creative all the time!â
Currently based in Sydney, Alyce has had the opportunity to explore parts of the world in such an eye opening way; I admire her freedom, her spirit and her gifted hands. âI went to America and Mexico for two months; being on the road travelling around, just two girlâs road tripping in a van was an experience like no other,â she muses âThere were times we would have to Google influential neighbourhoods so we could park on the road and not get rolled.â Travelling isnât unknown to this beauty, whereby her mother and also biggest inspiration travelled the world before bringing Alyce into it, âI never want to stop travelling; I remember growing up and looking at mumâs photo-filled albums of all these beautiful places like Egypt and Africa, so I guess I got the bug pretty early!â she furthers.
Having experienced fashion photography down the track Alyce has steered a little away from that, desiring to capture peopleâs personalities rather than just a posed still with no emotion as she adds, âMy favourite photos are when someoneâs unaware, being more in the moment and expressing through their eyes.â Taking her images to a whole new level, once shot she plays around with various effects to create these alluring, raw and pure images. Drawing inspiration from photographer Dana Trippe (whose edits are out of this world), Alyce combines her two loves of creating and editing (TIP ALERT) âI put them through Photoshop to fix up the background and lighting then make my own pre-sets which I put through light room, retouch and then back to Photoshop to draw, print or paint over them,â Alyce explains.
With a love also for nature you can expect to find Alyce outdoors 99% of the time, a place where she can manipulate the light and explore new settings. And on that note, Alyce is about to explore a whole new avenue as a fully-fledged freelancer âIâm going to keep trying everything until I can make it a daily job,â she exclaims.

Major Leagues have returned just in time for winter, helping you to get through the colder months with some sweet, comforting tunes. Listening to their entire upcoming debut album, Good Love, whilst wrapped up like a burrito is one helluva way to spend my Sunday morning. The indie quartet is following on from their major hit EP, Dream States, from last year with 12 nostalgic tracks soon to drop on 16 June via Popfrenzy, exploring a heartfelt and cohesive trip down (someoneâs) memory lane.
In support of the soon to be released LP, the four-piece have already treated their fans with two dreamy, pop-beat tunes: title track Good Love and It Was Always You, both accompanied by modest music videos that embody a Brisbane-ish feel. The endearing vocals of Curls, cradle the lyrics âWhen you kissed me / I felt lousy inside,â expressing a truthful insight into the real world of teen angst. The body of Mess Up combines the subtle sounds of guitar riffs with dream-state in sync harmonies.
Produced by the much-admired Australian artist, Jonathan Boulet, the sound of the record is not dissimilar to that of a thriving teen garage band/uni student radio vibe. The result of a close collaboration between all members, especially Anna Davidson and Jaimee Fryer, whose creative writing process has fused together this time âround forming a stronger, more natural and cohesive sound than before. Expect to hear alluring vocal harmonies, smooth lo-fi production and nostalgic undertones like that of the opener Swimming Out.
Standouts include Swimming Out, which kicks things into gear, putting into perspective their DIY pop path. Characterised by a melodic loveliness, Major Leagues are going to make heads bob, hearts melt and brains yearn.

Jessica Violet Meier Twenty One Capricorn
Driven by the force of historical events, the power of women, the sounds and sights revealed from explorations on her travels⌠Meet Jessica (Jess) Meier â the empowering songwriter, vocalist and producer from Sydney, Australia dubbed Violet. âIâm obsessed with being able to do everything myself, itâs really bad but itâs good,â shares Jess.Â
A few weeks ago I was sitting in the backyard of this immensely talented and passionate musician and artist. With a presence so alluring Jess took me on a journey through her life so far discussing: her love for anything old school, being a self-taught producer, venturing both in Australia and overseas and releasing her new single Wo(man) a first off her upcoming EP. Travelling close to home or far and wide can open up endless opportunities, bringing a lifetime of knowledge and a chance to connect with the unknown. Funnily enough whilst Jess was on the other side of the world in Europe she was contacted by Triple J Unearthed in response to her third song Ivory âI was in Europe being emailed, so I felt really disconnected on what was going on, but it was my first song that got a bit of traction so that was cool and I ran with that and did a mini phone interview,â expresses Jess. Even though this brought exposure from numerous blogs like Happy Mag and sites in England, looking back on this song today Jess furthers how important travelling is for human growth âAt that point that was a pop song about indigenous rights and white guilt but I had no fucking idea⌠listening back to it Iâm like okay you thought that but now having travelled I have a much better understanding of the whole situation.â Europe holds a special place in Jessâ heart and mind basing her last single 1995 which was premiered on The Ladies Network on Bosnia as Jess adds âI fell in love with the country and met a lot of people that had lived through the war so I wanted to write about it; I do like to write when Iâm in a certain place.â Jessâs creative direction is like no other, connecting with everything she finds and being immensely resourceful she is known to record sounds and put them back into her music; the intro of this powerful and emotive song actually starts with a sound coming out of a mosque, âI am obsessed with sampling and field recording so if we go anywhere we take recorders and weâll record sounds from that place and then put it in the songâ explains Jess. Working with Anna Laverty to finalise the song this was the first time Jess had worked with a producer and in a studio as she illuminates âSheâs one of the most famous female producers in Australia, which is super important to me because there arenât many. Wanting to work with her and not having been in a studio before this point I wanted to have that experience.â On her return from Europe she travelled to Melbourne to record at SING SING âLaverty and I did the vocal take, mixed and finished it there in two days and then released it that end of last year.â Taking some time out Jess has been dedicated to learn more as a self-taught producer. Along with her boyfriend Alex the two have found the right creative process to work alongside each other to co-produce/engineer her new single. âI wanted to know how to produce and engineer especially as a woman a lot of the time people say things like âOh yeah, youâre a singer, great, you can stand up on stage with a microphone but you donât actually know how to record or the process involved,â so this was at the back of my mind motivating me to prove that I can do this!â Jess proclaims. The process of learning to produce was unintentional, not going out of her way to learn it it just sort of happened as she mentions âAlexâs skills have developed a lot more than mine, bouncing off each other and in the mean time travelling around Europe and Asia for several months, I wasnât doing nothing â wanting to travel for inspiration and then come back and further this.â The two down to earth souls set off on an adventure to the Northern Territory, with a vision in mind they documented their trip with old school cameras using the film footage and imagery to go with the new releases. Jess enlightens âWe took 80s and 90s VHS cameras (again obsessed with old footage) really trying to capture the landscape. Taking a scenic flight, the pilot was like âWhat the fuck are you doingâ whilst we were practically hanging out the windows with our six cameras snapping away.â The results are breathtaking and Jess is hoping to release a video with the footage or a short film for her future EP, stay tuned! Having just released her new single Wo(man) which is available via Triple J Unearthed marks a significant time in Jessâ career; producing it herself (along with Alex), exploring a different process and welcoming new sounds. With an aim to release five-to-six tracks later this year this is the first off her upcoming EP âFocusing on womanhood, femininity and masculinity and the whole idea of what It means to be a woman in different cultures and throughout history as well,â exclaims Jess. With a book full of lyrics (which is usually the beginning of all her songs) Wo(man) actually started from a melody and took on a completely different sound to any before âMy new release is more electronic, experimental/alternative pop music whereas before I would refer to my pieces as cinematic-sadcore,â says Jess. Finding inspiration from history, events, points in time and the war, this hauntingly beautiful single takes on a personal outlet for her own feelings âMost of the time I want to delve into how other people would feel and put myself in someone elseâs shoes,â Jess extends. Steering away from the electronic spectrum and bringing it back to real instruments âIâm writing with just my vocals, pretty much every song I am going to release this year is based on a vocal loop,â inputs Jess âIt will all be original, Iâm hoping the EP will be joined together with little interludes and spoken word pieces to make it a smooth flowing whole body of work.â With so much creative talent bubbling up inside her, this year is a road to exciting happenings. With a single just released and a few more up her sleeves expect to see an EP launch coming your way with projections, album artworks, videos and more live shows! This is one lady not to be missed. Interview - Elke and the Jandel
ON WELCOMING NEW BAND MEMBERS, RELEASING THEIR ENTIRE DEMO COLLECTION &Â SUPPORTING SKEGGS.Â
Elke and the Jandel are one of the funkiest emerging bands this year; combining six energetic and passionate souls to create the raw and groovy tunes that just keep flowing... The other week I got to catch up with two-sixths of the high school mates: Felix Smith (Keyboard) and Sam Nakkan (Lead Guitar) to talk about welcoming new band members, what really went down when they played with Skegss and releasing their entire demo collection. âWe started off as a 5-piece with Dan, Luke, Max, myself and our friend Ruth singing but at the beginning of last year she wasn't really up for performing and doing the whole band thing so we brought in Nelson to sing and Felix to play keys who were already making music together at the time so it made sense to add both of them.â Expanding from a five-piece to a six-piece, the Wollongong based indie-rock/pop band have joined forces and entered the new year thriving. With major changes to the band itself and to their sound, being heavily inspired by various iconic artists as Felix states âWe all generally have a broad taste in music including the likes of Arctic Monkeys, The Kooks, San Cisco and The Jungle Giants⌠A bunch of us listen to artists like Catfish and the Bottlemen and The Wombats too.â Nakkan describes their sound as âKinda like ravioli, cause it can look like simple pasta on the outside, but be surprisingly interesting on the inside,â well I hope you have a taste for pasta because these tunes are too good to turn down! Speaking of which their recent demo release NikNakk has hit the streets with animation done by their mate Dom O'Donnel marks a significant time in the bands career âNikNakk was the first song that was brought to the band after Nelson and I had joined,â adds Felix. The six-track piece can be found over on their Youtube with a sweet acoustic version of The Waiting Game up on Triple J Unearthed. Felix shares with us his personal faves âI'd say probably NikNakk or The Waiting Game; both give off good vibes and are easy to bob your head to,â which at the end of the day is a pretty important factor! With a creative process down pack they all work closely together, each bringing unique content to flesh the songs out and provide the world with dance-worthy beats, we all like a boogie right?! Travelling back and forth between the Gong and Sydney (with numerous incentives) to produce the demo, Sam reveals âWe recorded the Drums and a few other instrument parts in Sydney at JMC Academy for free cause Nelson was doing a course there which meant that we actually ended up spending more money on sushi than the recording,â he laughs. âWhen Nelson completed the course we ended up finishing the recordings from home.â Staying close to home, literally, by creating and rehearsing in Felixâs garage Elke and the Jandel are now dedicating their time to producing a shitload of more tunes for our earholes. Taking control of their future in the music industry with no managers or record labels involved âWe haven't really opened up that avenue yet,â inputs Felix, theyâll be releasing their new single themselves as he furthers âWe've been doing stuff by ourselves pretty well plus it saves money but we will need to start thinking about that idea in the near future if we want to further our music.â So if anyone is keen to get on board then hit them up!  Rewinding the tape back (pun intended) to January when the team hit the road travelling towards Batemans Bay to play with legends Skeggs; just one catch they didnât actually know that. âIt was funny cause we knew we were playing the gig but we didn't know that it was with Skegss until we were sent the promo poster a few weeks before the gig!â Sam muses. Having played numerous gigs this support show was definitely a highlight⌠Being contacted by a booking agent, the boys agreed without knowing the exact details â dedicated musos right there! âIt ended up being a pretty fun weekend down the coast for us all,â expresses Sam. Exciting times ahead for Elke and the Jandel with upcoming gigs, fresh shirts (designed and made by Ellis Baker) and songs in the works. The energy and vibe that radiates off the stage is unreal so be sure to catch them tomorrow as they take over everyoneâs favourite waterhole Coledale RSL.
