𝑪𝒉𝒂𝒑𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝑻𝒘𝒐 — 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑴𝒂𝒏 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑹𝒊𝒏𝒈
Morning sunlight slipped through the curtains, landing directly across Vivienne's face.
She groaned and pulled the blanket over her head.
With a sigh, she reached blindly across the bed and grabbed it.
She stared at the message.
Daeron: Good morning to you too.
Daeron: That's not early.
Me: It is when I'm sleeping.
Daeron: Knew you'd say that.
Me: What can I say? I'm a woman of priorities.
Daeron: You're a parasite.
She smiled at the screen.
Daeron: I'll pick you up at twelve.
Me: That's not a location.
Me: Tell me where we're going.
Daeron: Wear something comfortable.
Daeron: See you at twelve :)
She stared at the message.
“Something is definitely wrong with him.”
By eleven-thirty, Vivienne had changed three times.
The first outfit felt too dressy.
The second felt too casual.
She looked at herself in the mirror.
She changed into loose black pants and black shirt.
Daeron: Hurry up, grandma.
Me: I'm going to make you pay for lunch.
Daeron: You were already planning on that.
When she walked outside, Daeron was leaning against his car.
“You're twelve minutes late.”
“That's basically early.”
“That's not how time works.”
“It's how my time works.”
Daeron opened the passenger door.
He shut the door and walked around to the driver's side.
The moment he got in, she looked at him suspiciously.
“Where are we actually going?”
“Because we're getting lunch.”
“Then why did you tell me to wear something comfortable?”
“Because I care about your comfort.”
“You're a terrible liar.”
“I'm actually an excellent liar.”
“You told me you were sick last week because you didn't want to go to class.”
“I was emotionally sick.”
“That wasn't a compliment.”
“I chose to take it as one.”
She shook her head, smiling.
After a few minutes, she noticed the route.
“This isn't the way to any restaurant.”
the familiar streets of the restaurant disappeared behind us.
He simply nodded like it was the most normal thing in the world. My stomach gave a strange little flip. I had heard plenty about Maekar Targaryen, but I had never actually met him. Suddenly, the thought of walking into that gym and meeting him for the first time made me feel a lot more nervous than I wanted to admit.
“There is a restaurant five minutes away.”
“So we're going to the gym first?”
“You deliberately lied to me.”
I stared at Daeron in disbelief he laughed, trying to explain himself, but I wasn't having it. I had dressed for dinner, not a gym, and the fact that he'd deliberately tricked me made my irritation grow with every passing second.
“I prefer the word surprised.”
“You're lucky I like you.”
The gym was larger than she'd imagined.
The moment they stepped inside, Vivienne heard the unmistakable sound of boxing gloves hitting a heavy bag.
She looked toward the ring.
Daeron noticed her staring.
“I'm just wondering if your father always sounds like he's trying to destroy something.”
They walked farther inside.
I had never met Maekar Targaryen before that moment, and somehow my first impression of him was him standing there after training, completely unaware of the effect his presence had on me. I knew his name, of course, but knowing a name and actually seeing the person were two very different things. My eyes lingered for a second longer than they should have before I quickly looked away, my cheeks warming. Oh, this is going to be a problem. He was intimidating, undeniably so, but there was something about him that made it surprisingly difficult to look anywhere else.
Maekar Targaryen stood in the ring.
He was tall and imposing, his silver hair cut short. His expression was completely unreadable as he struck the heavy bag again.
There was no wasted movement.
Maekar looked toward them.
His gaze moved to Daeron first.
Vivienne suddenly felt as though she were being assessed.
Vivienne didn't mind getting assessed or studied by Maekar she loved the attention.
Maekar stepped away from the bag.
Daeron looked at his watch.
Maekar ignored the comment.
His attention returned to Vivienne.
“This is Vivienne. My best friend.”
Maekar's eyes remained on her.
He had said it so simply that it took her a moment to realize what he meant.
Daeron's eyebrows lifted.
“Oh, this is interesting.”
Daeron immediately pressed his lips together.
Vivienne tried not to laugh.
Maekar looked back at her.
“How long have you known my son?”
“And you stayed here for university?”
His eyes narrowed slightly, as if committing the answer to memory.
“So,” he said, breaking the silence, “are we going to pretend this isn't an interrogation?”
“Exactly. Interrogation.”
“See? Every time I introduce someone to you, you scare them away.”
Maekar's expression remained serious.
“I haven't scared her away.”
Daeron looked at Vivienne.
Maekar's gaze shifted to her again.
My eyes travelled over him before I could stop them, starting with his silver hair and stern face before briefly taking in the rest of him. Then his eyes met mine. I froze. Maekar was looking at me now, his expression unreadable, and suddenly I became painfully aware of the fact that I'd been staring. Heat crept into my cheeks as I quickly looked away, my heart beating a little faster than it had a moment ago. For some reason, knowing he'd caught me made me even more nervous.
There was the faintest change in his expression.
“You find it amusing sweetheart?”
The word caught me completely off guard. Maekar said it so casually, as though he hadn't just sent my heart stumbling over itself. I blinked up at him, warmth creeping into my cheeks as I quickly looked away, suddenly far too interested in the flowers beside me. Of all the things he could have called me, I hadn't expected that one.
“See? That's what I'm talking about.”
Vivienne laughed awkwardly.
Maekar watched her for another moment before looking toward his son.
“You said you were taking her to lunch.”
“I thought I'd show her the gym.”
Maekar's gaze returned to Vivienne.
“Have you ever watched a fight?”
Then he nodded toward the seats beside the ring.
I blinked, surprised by the offer. After everything that had happened, I hadn't expected him to invite me to watch him train, let alone fight.
I asked, trying not to sound too eager. He gave a small nod, and despite myself, a smile tugged at my lips. Maybe staying at the gym wasn't going to be so bad after all.
Maekar's eyes hardened slightly.
His attention remained on Vivienne.
Then he turned back toward the ring.
Daeron leaned toward her and whispered,
“I've known my father my entire life.”
“He has never offered anyone to watch him train.”
Her eyes widened. I glanced back at Maekar, who was already preparing for his next round, then looked at Daeron in confusion. Apparently, Maekar never invited just anyone to stay and watch him. The realization made my stomach flutter, and suddenly his earlier offer felt a little more significant than I'd first thought.
She looked toward the ring.
Maekar had already returned to the heavy bag.
But before throwing his next punch, his eyes briefly found hers again.
I tried to focus on anything except Maekar, but every time I glanced toward the ring, his eyes seemed to find mine. Even while punching the bag, he looked over at me between strikes, his expression calm and unreadable. I felt my cheeks heat under his attention and quickly looked down, pretending to be interested in my hands. Why does he keep looking at me? I wondered, biting back a nervous smile. Somehow, knowing he was watching me made it nearly impossible to concentrate on anything else.
Daeron smiled to himself.
Behind them, Maekar continued training.
But his attention wasn't entirely on the bag anymore.
The gym felt strangely quiet after Daeron and Vivienne left for lunch. I watched them disappear through the doors before turning back toward the punching bag.
I hadn't expected Daeron to bring anyone with him, especially her. She was a pretty little thing, but there was something about her that seemed almost too easy to notice. I'd caught her looking at me more than once, only for her to quickly look away whenever our eyes met. She would be very fun to play with, It amused me more than it should have.
I shook my head and returned my attention to the bag. She was Daeron's friend. Nothing more. She is not Dyanna.
At least, that's what I told myself.
