Miller, on assignment from Globe Photos, was making photographs to be used to promote Giant (1956). James Dean and Elizabeth Taylor were photographed in Dallas during a weekend break in filming. Both Taylor and Dean, a photographer himself, were comfortable with Miller making natural-looking photographs in available light. Neither was posing, but Dean was not beyond assisting the photographer in creating an interesting picture. “Dean was a natural who understood the camera and what the photographer was doing. He aided you. As I began to photograph them on the couch, he saw me and picked up the magazine with Taylor on the cover as ‘Mother of the Year’. He knew it was a good picture. He had a sense for good pictures.”
