CRITICAL ROLE 4.16 Visions of Shadow & Stone
I've seen the argument a few times now, made in defense of Bolaire being Like Thatβ’: "but it makes it more interesting that Thjazi isn't 100% a good guy!" And to that I'm like,
"Good people can do bad things sometimes" is interesting for the topic of a 5th grade book report. Any level beyond that it's kinda like. the baseline for complexity, and not something a mature story needs to waste time establishing explicitly before diving into deeper realms. Like, sure yes, it is more interesting for Thjazi to be complex than it would be for him to be entirely one-dimensional. But CR is not known for producing one-dimensional characters so what would be actually genuinely interesting is if both story and audience could presume "people are more than one thing" is a basic storytelling postulate and proceed from there.
As for the Bolaire of it all: Bolaire takes the attitude that anyone who had a positive relationship with Thjazi is suffering under a delusion of naive hero-worship and he takes it as his job to disabuse them of that notion. He's not the only one with this perspectiveβJulien said pretty much exactly thatβbut he's particularly vocal and insistent about it, to the point of being condescending. Even when he seems to think he's being pragmatic, his arguments against trusting Thjazi posthumously are focused much less on any of the issues at hand and much more so on opining his own suffering, and especially this last episode on getting Thimble (and to some extent Mara) to admit they're wrong about Thjazi. The idea that his cynicism is useful or necessary for the story in order to complicate an otherwise unblemished figure and establish Thjazi as multi-faceted falls apart under close analysis.
Thjazi's legacy is already complicated and loaded with baggage for each individual mourning him. It's especially telling that I've yet to see anyone bring up Azune when making a case for Thjazi's dark side. Azune is only an Arcane Marshall as a service to Thjazi, to be his man on the inside, and living this under cover life is killing him from the inside out! Beyond that: Hal has complicated feelings about how his brother shielded him, Thimble is grappling with her identity beyond being his partner in crimeβthese are all interesting character arcs which take as postulate that Thjazi was a complicated figure capable of fighting for noble ideals and of causing harm while doing so. If Bolaire's vague references to cruel and dehumanizing treatment (from a character who has repeatedly displayed both those tendencies himself, no less) are seriously meant to balance out our view of Thjazi or prove that everyone else has rose-tinted glasses, then it's pretty sloppy storytelling, and a disservice to the other characters' internal arcs.
Crucially, the most interesting part of Azune or Hal or Thimble's relationship to Thjazi is that they are not about Thjazi. Thjazi is dead, and this is a story about how the people whose lives he impacted continue in his absence. Bolaire's repeated attempts to pull Thjazi off this imagined pedestal are extra frustrating because he recenters the conversation onto the truth of Thjazi's character, placing both the plot and his own character arc in the periphery. Thjazi and Bolaire's history can and should be a means of progressing Bolaire's character arc, yet after the umpteenth reiteration of the same contrarian position Bolaire has held the whole campaign thus far, Taliesin has only made minimal headway into the themes of personhood that he seems to want to explore with this character concept. We're only just reaching the meat of Bolaire's interiority at the end of this episode, and it was more spurned by his interactions with Figment and Demodus than it emerged from his antagonistic history with Thjazi.

CRITICAL ROLE 4.18 Vindicta & Vale
my calendar piece for december for @dragonageannual !! i had so so much fun working on this with all those talented people ! :)))
the late realization that Thjazi only started trying to kill Julien as soon as they left Lady Aranessa is so funny. Man fuck this guy, bring me back to my wife.
It's hilarious that Otto Einfasen seems to have just kind of accepted that, "Occtis Tachonis was brutally murdered by his own family last week" and "He's still wandering around and Vaelus saw him this morning" are both things which are completely true. He does of course have that letter from Occtis naming his family as his murderers, but it is still funny that he seems to have mentally filed that whole "dead but still walking around" situation under "Tachonis Bullshit" and is leaving it there
Thjazi Fang, figeratively and literally haunting the narrative since 2025

"there are no more giants walking this land, but the dead grow by the hour" unfortunately goes so hard, don't let the Tachonis family's PR team hear him say that
listen, if azune keeps rolling these natural twenties with the einfasen theyβre going to fucking ADOPT him
i cant believe teor bestowed the lion head of misfortune on wicander halovar
also primus is fully wrong like it absolutely will still matter that you fully murdered a member of the circle of the hunt with witnesses. that was an emotional response when you needed to use cold logic my guy. hannan was literally part of the very worst circle your house could piss off.
He's Figment. And Bolaire.

vaelus saying "i haven't seen a dragon in quite some time" and azune's face absolutely lighting up like a little kid saying "i didn't think they were real!" is the cutest thing i've ever seen in my life
The worst cherry on top of Julien's shit sundae ^_^;;;
