❛ Ah— Your Highness!” Her voice leaves her before she even realizes it. “I thought everyone would be asleep at this hour...” Precisely the reason she thought she could sneak in some sword training. “Oh goodness, I didn’t wake you, did I?”

❛ Hilda! My, what wonderful timing. I just received a package from home.” Her hands clasp, smile bright as the midday sun. “It was filled with all sorts of teas... I was about to try some. Would you care to join me?”

❛   that’s   …   ❜   her voice dies quickly at the mercy of her mother;   she had always been an expert at gaining the upper hand,    whether she intends to or not.   this is no exception,   &   even a daughter cannot resist her charms.

she shifts for a second,   eyes gazing towards the horse stables,   before her shoulders droop   &   a resigned sigh escaping her.   it had always been impossible to deny her mother’s request   —   even her father’s stern nature could not resist to agreeing with anything she requests.   ❛   um   …   okay.   i suppose a little break wouldn’t hurt.   ❜

With just a few words from her daughter, joy blossoms in her heart. In her younger days she might’ve clasped her hands together and giggled at her victory, but now her warm eyes simply crinkle as she smiles. Her own ( very faint ) sigh meets the air— one of relief that her daughter will have a chance to let her responsibilities fall from her shoulders and breathe. 

❛ Thank you, my dear.” She catches sight of the stables, and understands her thoughts at once. Motherly intuition tells her she won’t be able to get any real relaxing done if her mind is elsewhere. “You know... animals are sensitive to our stress. I’m sure all your friends in that stable are saying, ‘Go on, Marianne! Rest for a while!’ in horse-language.”

❛ Oh my, look at you! You’ve grown so much since I last saw you...” Rinea speaks in a hush, her words a caress for the flowers she adores. Little green sprouts emerge from the dark, rich soil in the planter, their delicate newborn stems surrounded by their blossoming brethren. It’s a beauty she loves to behold— no matter how many times she’s gifted with the sight, it always manages to ease her troubled heart.

Wonder easily takes hold of her, her mind discarding its fears and worries regarding her status at the Monastery... Instead, it flitters from one possibility to the next of what color the dainty floret’s petals shall be— what shape they’ll take— how brightly they’ll shine and dazzle her...

A song overflows from her heart, and then, from her lips— it comes as natural and effortless as breathing. Her practiced hands move to pluck fallen leaves and twigs from the planter in time with her tune. She sings of flowers, of the colors that cover the earth— of all things beautiful under the sun.

Rinea pauses her song briefly to dispose of what she’s gathered. 

❛ There you go, little one— there’s nothing quite like a good spring cleaning, mm?” She laughs airily, as if they’re good friends. Satisfied with her work, she leans against the planter, situating herself carefully on its edge. Her blue eyes shut softly, her chin tilting up towards the sky to bask in its light. 

And in her moment of serenity, there’s no force in the world that could keep her song from flying past her lips once again— the melody escaping into the air like a caged bird set free.
