girl who cried niche
The city at that time was not yet kind to anyone, but it was particularly indifferent to boys who arrived with nothing but the belief that they would not need anything else. It held them the way it held everything else that was temporary—lightly at first, almost curiously, and then with the slow, unremarkable pressure of weather and time, as if it had always known they would either adapt or disappear.
Sirius Black came into it like a disturbance rather than a person, the kind that does not announce itself but is noticed afterward in the rearrangement of what used to be still, moving through spaces as if they had been designed in anticipation of him, though no one would have admitted to designing anything at all in that part of the city. There were always people like him in those years, or at least people who seemed like him from a distance, bright in the way flammable things are bright, already half convinced that consequence was something that happened to other bodies.
Remus Lupin arrived more quietly, which in that place meant he was simply not remembered until later, when memory had already decided what mattered and what did not, carrying himself with the careful economy of someone who had learned early that taking up less space was a form of protection, though it was never clear whether it protected him from the world or from being asked to remain in it too long.
They met without ceremony, because there was no ceremony available to them, only the shared recognition of rooms that did not belong to anyone and therefore could be temporarily borrowed, of floors that accepted bodies without judgment, of nights that did not distinguish between those who were staying and those who were only passing through until they could afford to become someone else.
Nothing about it suggested importance at first. There was no moment that could be isolated and called beginning without distortion. Only the gradual accumulation of proximity, the way certain presences begin to interrupt solitude so consistently that solitude itself has to reorganize around them, until what used to be absence starts to feel like a kind of waiting.
In the early days, neither of them would have recognized the shape of what was forming between them, because it did not resemble anything they had been taught to expect from attachment. It was not declared, not chosen in any formal sense, not even fully understood as mutual; it was simply what remained when everything unnecessary had been stripped away by circumstance, leaving behind a shared condition that could not yet be named without reducing it.
Later, it would be tempting to call it love, because language prefers conclusions that fit neatly into familiar outlines, but at the time it was closer to endurance disguised as coincidence, two lives moving parallel enough to mistake proximity for direction.
And the city, as it always did, continued around them without acknowledgment, storing their smallness inside its larger indifference, waiting to see what they would become when they finally understood they were already being written into something they did not yet have the distance to read.

Dear Evan,
You're an idiot. You repeat the same mistakes over and over.
At least I make new mistakes.
Maybe you always choose him because you know you can never have him, and that's safe.
If you ever chose me, you'd have me, and then what would you do?
I hate that.
You have too much power over me, and you're cruel with it.
I choose you, and it doesn't mean anything.
It's not fair.
But we can't all be Regulus and Potter, can we?
I hate you.
Love, Barty
