So it's been .... 9 years? ... since I started this, then took a 6-year hiatus due to postgrad stuff and a new baby who is now in kindergarten. Then last year my husband got NOEL CLARKE of all people to do a Cameo asking me to finish this fic. Equal parts an amazing and a humiliating Cameo lmao. “Well, I’ve got news for you, Doctor, you’re human now. You’re soon going to be ‘hibernating’ as much as the rest of us. Bet you’ll be even worse than me in the mornings,” Rose poked his chest as she taunted him.

The Doctor’s hand flew up to pin her hand to his chest, using it as leverage to pull her closer as he leaned in; he’d also missed holding her hand. “Perhaps, but you’ll be there to sort me out, won’t you?”

Rose had forgotten how much she hated when her babies were teething. Hannah was inconsolably irritated for many hours of the day, and nothing she or James did seemed to help. They provided her with a multitude of hard, cold objects to chew and suck on to alleviate her discomfort. They gave the same teething toys to Maddie, but she wasn’t interested in them; she instead preferred softer textures. She was often found chewing on the arms and legs of her stuffed animals, or on any piece of cloth that was in reaching distance. James had turned around from doing the dishes one morning to find Maddie sitting in her high chair happily gnawing on a dish towel.

Within days of them realizing the twins were teething, Maddie’s first tooth broke through. James noticed it when he got the twins up one morning. She had smiled at him as he changed her nappy, and he saw a white, craggy tip peeking through her pink gums. He had carried her into their bedroom, where Rose was in the middle of a shower.

“First tooth!” he announced, yanking back the shower curtain and holding the baby out proudly to his wife. Maddie delighted in the spray of water, bouncing in his outstretched hands.

Rose rolled her eyes at her daft husband and ordered him out so she could finish her shower in peace. But as soon as she was dressed for the day, she inspected her baby’s first tooth, took a photo of it, and jotted the date into Maddie’s baby book.

I hear some people claim that she should have just figured she wasn’t the first, but why would she do that? She doesn’t know about the Doctor’s history of traveling with friends, but you know what part of his history she does know? The Time War. The Doctor being the Last of the Time Lords. If I were Rose, I wouldn’t assume that the Doctor had spent his life traveling with human friends, especially if he’s never mentioned such a thing. I would assume that he spent his life with his own people (who, remember, he hasn’t told her anything about, so she wouldn’t know how badly he fit in with them), and then the Time War happened, and he lost everyone, and THAT’S when he needed a friend. That’s why he wanted someone to travel with him. That’s when he met her.

2. She soon learns that stopping alien threats is something he does with regularity. Not just on Earth, though. No, on many different planets. Planets where aliens live and shop, yet he doesn’t invite lifeforms when he travels with her. However, she does—and he reluctantly goes along with it.

3. He tells her he’s alone. “I’m a Time Lord. I’m the last of the Time Lords. They’re all gone. I’m the only survivor. I’m left travelling on my own ‘cos there’s no one else.“ It wouldn’t be strange of her to assume he’s been travelling with his people up until the Time War. Since that is basically what he says.

4. He repeatedly calls humans “stupid apes” and shows a certain contempt that would have most people assuming that maybe he’s not too fond of humans.

5. She’s really more concerned about learning that he just leaves people behind and picks up someone new. She’s scared of being replaceable, because he means the world to her and she thought it was mutual. And you know what? Most people don’t like feeling as though they’re replaceable. I’m sure you wouldn’t like it either—regardless of the nature of your relationship (platonic, romantic, sexual or familial).
