Kandarpa has two meanings. One is ‘Kama’, the god of love and it also means amazing. This sculpture portray Krishna with the gopikas in different formations. They are so under the spell of Krishna’s love, that they are entangled and aligned in different postures around him. The female figures, in acrobatic poses, forming the wheels of the chariot. They are drawn such that their arms and one of their legs form the spokes of the wheel; they almost seem to spin around. The gopikas who form the superstructure of the chariot are in positions such that their limbs often wrap around each other in various ways (the hand of one grabbing the ankle of another, the feet of one standing on the forearm of another, the hands of one upholding the legs and buttocks of another, the arms of two around each other's shoulders). Several of the gopikas carry fly-whisks or fans, presumably to attend to the comfort of Sri Krishna. Two of the maidens curiously float above the chariot carrying garlands that are perhaps intended for the bosom of their Lord. For me, the image of Kuldhara and actual Kuldhara was as like as chalk and cheese. Though abandoned, I always pictured the village with few houses signifying architecture of Rajasthan. But when I reached, what I heeded was destructed houses and heard was the place is haunted. Our driver told us the story behind the haunted-abandoned village of Kuldhara: "Few brahmin families lived in the village and suddenly one night they all left. The reason was Jaisalmer's state minister Salim Singh, stubborn on marrying a brahmin girl. Frightened villagers with no choice left the village and cursed the land saying henceforth, no one can settle here." The place is left with just a temple. The village is patrolled strictly and no one after the sunset is allowed to visit.
