"Some academics and spectators will only ever read the film as a dreadful sociological object. They will only ever see a motion picture simplistically reproducing age-old racial stereotypes of fried-chicken-eating, welfare-dependent, bitchy black mothers who turn black men into sexually predatory, disease-transmitting monsters in the black community. Many people will not see past those archetypes.

It is important to note that Sapphire’s formally complex novel was reasonably, faithfully adapted. As a result, Daniels achieved cinematic reflexivity, made references to Italian neorealism, used surrealism, expressionism, and tropes from horror films including the notion of the abjection, all to render the complexity of this fictional character’s experience. As a consequence, it is worth re-evaluating the film to consider its complexity and stylistic rigor."
