at least i'm not afraid of ghosts.

The incredulous look cast towards Josh was a biting thing. If she weren't so controlled she may have actually bared her teeth mockingly towards the other; he was taunting her with the knowledge she didn't like ghost hunting. A soft scoff and a huff of breath that would end in a shaking of her head in disapproval. β Yeah, because you're so okay with dealing with something that could just pop up out of nowhere at any second? I didn't like the Poltergeist movie, thank you very much. β Ghosts made her nervous. They made anyone nervous, except for her poor tact-inclined friend here. A roll of her eyes fragged that stare back towards the other, her obvious discomfort written plainly in that scowl.
Why did he have to be right?
β Alright, brave guy. Go on. You're so 'unafraid' of ghosts, you can take the lead, eh? When you get locked into some closet don't come crying to me to save you. β
what an excellent day for an exorcism.

β An exorcism?! You have got to be fucking kidding me. β There couldn't have been something she knew about in this grotesquely haunted place, could there? Laura's eyes scanned their surroundings with a growing sense of dread at the insinuation that their new problem was something beyond the supernatural. It was spiritual. At least one of them seemed confident in that recognition. A werewolf was physical. It could be shot at, wounded, even killed with the right preparation and tools - last she checked there wasn't anybody slinging guns at ghosts or demons.
-- β Don't you need a priest or something for that? I don't think we're exactly qualified for this kind of thing! β
PROMPTS FROM VARIOUS HORROR/SLASHER FILMS * Β assorted dialogue from scary movies i will never watch tbh :)
did you really call the police?
there is no death.
i told the others. they didn't believe me. you're all doomed.
i just can't take no pleasure in killing.
i don't really believe in motives.
there's just some things you gotta do. don't mean you have to like it.
if i concentrate hard enough, i can move things.
you must renounce this power. you must give it up.
there is something horrible happening in my house.
do you remember the thing you said on our wedding night?
you're going to die up there.
i've been afraid of storms ever since i was a little kid.
they're opening that place again?
at least i'm not afraid of ghosts.
my bed was shaking. i can't get to sleep.
you listen to me, you little bitch.
you sick fucks. you've seen one too many movies.
come on! it's gonna be a fun trip!
oh, that gun's no good.
you're such a sucker for it.
i've never sensed anything like it.
they die better that way.
you still haven't told me your name.
i was the killer!
somebody's there!
what are you doing out in this mess?
that's the last goddamn hitchhiker i ever pick up.
if i have any more fun today, i don't think i'm gonna be able to take it!
i don't think any of you have any idea of just how nasty what you did really was.
the devil exists. god exists. and for us, as people, our very destiny hinges upon which one we elect to follow.
you're doomed! you're all doomed!
what's your favorite scary movie?
shut your mouth!
hold me. please hold me.
you damn fool! you ruined the door!
i was at the slaughterhouse.
a second body was found in a ditch near the perimeter of the cemetery.
there's no need to do that.
what's that stench?
you're not even going to reprimand them? no punishment?
please help me!
you can't just let them kill me!
you never paid any attention!
i'll do anything!
sin never dies.
oh, that's blood all right.
you have a lot of spirits in here, but there is one i'm most worried about because it is so hateful.
are you alone in the house?
what an excellent day for an exorcism.
it knows what scares you. it has from the very beginning. don't give it any help, it knows too much already.
the power of christ compels you.
there's someone in this fucking room!
next time i catch anybody over there, i'm gonna have to run them in.
they're all gonna laugh at you!
we keep everything locked in here. feel free to look around.
hear that?
i'm the devil. now kindly undo these straps.
is there someone inside you?
don't go anywhere.
talk louder, i can't hear you!
you already cut me too deep! i think i'm dying here!
you fuckin' hit me with the phone, dick!
oh my god, i thought you were dead.
we all go a little mad sometimes.
this is the moment where the supposedly dead killer comes back to life for one last scare.
don't call me that!
you wanna get us killed!
come on, there's something you're not telling me.
you'll never come back again.
wanna see my trick shot? it's even better.
his body was never recovered from the lake after he drowned.
help me tie this around my waist.
you've never done this before.
when you hear it, you're gonna think we're insane.
it did that to your face?
everything you see in here is either haunted, cursed, or has been used in some kind of ritualistic practice.
watch it, you stupid shit.
it's clear enough that he's failing miserably, but josh has faced far worse in the past. he started this mess. might as well go all in. commit to it. he's proven himself before, in any case. the mention of norwegian, however, causes a visible change in his expression. bored curiosity shifts into a different kind of intrigue, something perhaps even a bit cautious. β well, actually... i mean, it's not like i'm fluent, but i do know a thing or two. β
resting his elbow against the bar, he leans in to examine the book, so far unconcerned. β though, 'm not sure why you'd bother if--- β
whatever snarky comment was coming is halted mid - phrase as he makes out the title of the book, dark eyes glued to the text. his brows furrow, thoughts processing before he seems to give in--- lets out a tired laugh and a wary look the stranger's way. no fucking way. josh leans back into his seat. β uh... look, hate to break it to ya, but we may be double booked here. β this certainly changes the tone of the evening.
Caution exuded from the young woman every step of the conversation. It felt as though they were playing with live embers, dancing amidst them while avoiding any contact with their burning presence, and, when Josh would indulge her curiosity, there would only be a look of incredulous disbelief on her face at the sudden shift in tone to the other. He wasn't trying to pull a joke anymore once an uncovered glance had been taken - she wasn't sure if that made her more nervous or excited by the fact he seemed to recognize the text.
Blue eyes darted between the other and the book she definitely didn't understand - honestly rather appalled at the strange luck of having found someone capable of reading it, unsure if it was a string of good or bad luck - until she gave way to a careful display of partial interest. "Wait - are you serious? Do you actually know something about this?" A turn then, her form shifting just enough to face the other more directly. "If you're playing with me right now I swear to god you'll regret it. What are you talking about?"

Btw, a random thing in the quarry I noticed. Almost everyone calls the werewolves "bears" the first time they see one. Either this or they are just confused. The only person who says "I think it was a person" is Laura. And I like how it ties with her possibility to be reluctant to shoot Silas in the end, because she sees him like she saw him for the first time: a person. I just think it's a neat detail
ONCE YOU'RE STRIPPED CLEAN, WHAT'S AT YOUR CORE?
RIPPLING SUNSET
youβre the nicest person iβll ever meet, probably. with an undying passion to protect those who canβt protect themselves, youβre energetic and bubbly to a fault. itβs cute, watching you run around trying to tie up loose ends. i feel bad for you β out of everyone you know, you probably have some of the deepest trauma, more than anyoneβs aware of. this isnβt something that you want attention for at all, and youβd really just rather forget it exists at allβ¦ even then, it seems like you can never escape it. i wish you a pleasant rest of your life, full of rippling sunsets and free of prying eyes.

THE QUARRY 2022
josh snorts, rubbing at the spot between his eyes. β right. yeah, i guess what i meant was, you don't exactly fit in with the rest of the clientele.. β she's too far out in the middle of nowhere to be hanging around a place like this -- as is he. β not that that's bad. just... got me thinking. β far be it from him to not sniff around, see who might have wandered into his next hunting grounds.
josh takes his drink as soon as it arrives, thumb tracing over the glass. it's disappointingly lukewarm. β name's josh, by the way. β he's grasping at straws, trying to keep her attention. prove he's not a total creep to her. seems he's got a bit of a track record developing. β you, uh, reading anything interesting? β
She had done her best to ignore the worst of his drawling commentary. It was an unwelcome distraction, a distraction that had made her realize that she was frustratingly no closer to understanding the text in front of her than she had been ten minutes ago. The book wasn't written strictly in English and she had been hoping that there would be enough in the footnotes to make it a worthwhile endeavor. A sigh, kept internal, as her gaze would lift to flit over to her distraction. It took a moment of eyes flickering up and down the other to determine that this was either a horrifically poor attempt at picking her up or he was horrendously bored.
β Uh...okay? β Eyes would dart around them then in search of anything else to focus on at the reveal of his name. She wasn't as keen to put hers out so openly. The second question would earn more ground, at least, as she would offer a somewhat defeated sigh and shake her head, eyes dropping to the horribly useless book. β Not really, unless you're some really convenient expert in reading Norwegian, Josh. β Laura could force a smile when necessary, strained as it may have been and wholly useless in concealing her agitation at the setback. β ...you aren't, right? β
ok i'll bite. *just starts fucking biting you*
γ PLOTTED γ // @losthacketteer
this part is always the most boring; those quiet moments where there's no more work to be done, nowhere to go. time to himself--- and josh never liked sitting alone with his thoughts. seeking out a distraction, he resigns himself to the stuffy hotel bar, awaiting a whiskey and coke.
β you here for work? β he turns his gaze to the blonde by his side, eyeing her with unmasked curiosity. she doesn't exactly fit in with the rest of the hotel crowd, but, then again, neither does he. β i'm an outta-towner, myself. β
There was work to be done. Few nights were so willing to offer a time freed from following some trail or another, this one being no different when it came to the hunt. What vile things existed in the dark of the night seldom rested while the rest of the world moved on in its blissful obliviousness - and she had to take every opportunity to get ahead of those monsters.
A hotel bar. A book idly flipped through while a drink with some kind of fruit and something bubbly in it passed the time far too quickly. The night was young, evidently too much so when there was an interruption in the form of a voice at her side. A pause came in that reading, blue eyes cast briefly upwards towards the decorative shelves of alcohol attached to the hotel bar and lips tightening into a thin line of a smile. β Work would be an objectively...loose term. β That gaze returned to the book without offering anything more inviting to the stranger. β We're at a hotel, bud. I don't think many locals stay at hotels. β
