The force that Kris collides with him is enough to send the both of them spinning in the sand. It has Kris kicking up clumps of wet dirt in an effort to stay upright while the sound of their collective laughter can be heard over the crashing waves. However, her laughter quickly turns into a surprised yelp when Jimmy suddenly falls back into the wet sand and shallow water, easily taking her with him- reminding her of the occasional play fights the two of them would get into during the dead of winter on the floor of a warehouse somewhere back on the east coast.
Another surprised yelp leaves Krisâs lips as a cold wave soon washes over the both of them leaving them completely soaked. The cold water has Kris all but climbing onto Jimmyâs lap. Her legs straddling his hips, her arms pulling him in close in a feeble attempt to stay warm and get away from the water. Soon, however, the waves recede and Kris pulls back from him slightly just so she can take another good look at his face. A calloused hand moves to cradle his cheek, while her other hand settles on his chest just above his heart.Â
Again, this all feels so real and the happiness swelling in her chest truly makes it feel like itâs about to burst, but thereâs still the smallest sliver of doubt worming at the edges of her mind. That any second sheâll wake up and all sheâll be left with is the painfully familiar empty space where she wished he was instead. That she would wake up, she'd still be on the road and there would still be monsters at her doorstep.
But no. Sheâs touching his face, tracing a few lines that werenât there the last time she she saw him, her thumb running against his lower lip while beneath her other hand she can feel the very real hammering of his heart. He's still here. âGod, itâs really youâŚâ she whispers, pressing her forehead to his. âYouâre really hereâŚâÂ
Jim's laughing when the water hits them, smile lingering bright and warm as she settles herself in his lap, and a few years ago there would've been some filthy pickup line to follow. But it doesn't come fast enough, not when he's confronted with so much gentle sincerity in the touch of her hand against his face, her palm against his chest, where he can feel his heart thundering away.
His mood oscillates with hers, grasping at happiness while unable to shake the undercurrent of despair and loss that had made itself a constant companion. He feels the same messy emotions he imagines she is, relief mixed with disbelief, happiness tempered by dread, because nothing good ever stayed. He wants to grasp onto whatever shared joy they can with both hands, let himself remember what it feels like to mean it when he laughs, but it falters beneath her sincerity.
His arms shift to wrap around her, heels digging into the sand as he pushes himself into a sitting position, even as he holds her in place. Dragging her closer against his chest as his head tips up to meet her gaze, but it's hard to summon the right words, or even any words at all. A huff of laughter escaping him first, closing his eyes when the next wave rolls in and over them, washing the sand from his back.
When he opens his eyes she's still there, and his smile softens beneath the reality of that simple fact. "God I missed you." The words sound weak, but nothing else seems worth saying. "Every day. Hope you know that."
