As of this morning I was reluctantly looking for jobs because I love my job and don't want to leave it, but see: $10k raise problem solver.

As of noon today this was no longer an issue, because my boss called me with the news that I was getting a $10K merit raise.

I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders. This is roughly $200 extra per paycheck. Enough to pay off debt faster, rebuild my savings, and spend a weekend a month in Milwaukee getting obscenely laid. The sex I'm going to have on $200 extra per paycheck. You can't even.

Call me whatever you like. But I'm taking your cake.

It's not uncommon to feel frustrated or impatient at having to repeat yourself. However, feeling frustration or impatience at having to repeat yourself doesn't mean that you need to show that to whoever you're speaking with.

There's all sorts of factors that can lead to someone not understanding you and needing you to repeat yourself. People can have auditory processing disorders, people can be hard of hearing, people can have a different first language than you, etc. Or even if someone doesn't have an auditory processing disorder, and isn't hard of hearing, and has the same first language as you, that doesn't mean they deserve to receive a snippy attitude just because they couldn't hear you or understand you the first time.

Either way, especially when someone just didn't understand you, it's always unkind and inconsiderate to be snippy or rude to someone just because they couldn't understand you. It makes life extra hard for marginalized groups, such as immigrants who have to regularly communicate in their second language, or people who are hard of hearing, when they have to deal with constant snippy attitudes or even cruelty from those who find it justifiable to be unkind to someone just for not being able to understand.

Although it's true that many people consider taking a phone call in public to be rude and will consider it more polite if you dismiss yourself to somewhere private to take the phone call, a public bathroom with someone trying to do their business in the stall next to you isn't the most private place.

Consider that someone trying to do their business probably doesn't want a stranger on the phone hearing them do their business, and likewise your conversation partner on the phone likely doesn't want to hear strangers doing their business in the background.

The reason it's polite to do this is the same reason it's polite to defer to people in other situations, such as if you're both walking up to the check-out line at the grocery store at the same, time it's more polite to offer the other person to go first rather than trying to quickly shove in front of them as fast as you can. Or, why if we grab for something at the same time as someone else, we stop and offer to let them have it.

Civility when sharing something with someone else, whether it's a conversation, a public space, or a physical object, makes sharing conversations/spaces/objects more fair, equal, and tolerable for everyone.

On the other hand, incivility and brute force, such as shouting over someone if they talk at the same time as you, shoving in front of someone who's approaching the line at the same time as, grabbing for something faster when you see someone else grabbing for it, etc. make sharing the world with other people more difficult, but it also makes the world even harder for anyone who's at a disadvantage.

Anyone who has a speach impediment, or possibly is just shy and has a difficult time speaking up, is going to have a harder time getting their turn to speak if it's acceptable to shout over them whenever someone accidentally speaks at the same time as them. Children, elderly people, disabled people, or anyone at a physical disadvantage are going to always lose out in a society where it's acceptable to just shove in front of them in line or grab for something faster if you reach for it at the same time as them.
