Coming live from the Twin Cities! Here we have a quarter pound all beef hot dog in a pretzel bun with the option to upgrade it into a Diamond Dog, wrapped in deep fried pepper bacon. Good dog for a quick stop Downtown Minneapolis with some strong cocktails available too. Bacon was a solid touch for a unique hot dog. Pretzel bun added some flavor but it could've been grilled imo. Thank you Blue Gene's for giving me this FREE hot dog. Solid hot dog. They provide ketchup, mustard, mayo, and relish for alternative hot dog connoisseurs. The dog was perfectly cooked on a classic hot dog roller grill they have behind the bar. While I paired this with an old fashioned, others might enjoy this bar hot dog with a beer of their choice.

As usual... bun was mediocre but the hot dog itself was great. We can always strive to be better, Shake Shack.

A dear friend and enthusiast of this Hot Dog Blog purchased this for me at the Christkindlmarkt SLC. It was delicious. It was a bratwurst which is in the grey-zone of a hot dog for the purposes of this blog... but I, humble and benevolent, will allow it.

An excellent hot dog. J-Dawgs, once again, pulls ahead as one of the best hot dog locations in Utah. This particular dog was at a hockey game at the Delta center. If you are looking to break the bank, a nice J-Dawg and a $20 beer is a fantastic addition to your sport of choice. Tusks up!

If you are looking for a good cheap hot dog in Utah, head to your closest Crown Burgers. This hot dog had a crisp bun and the meat was sweet, juicy, and grilled. It pairs well with a side of fries or Coke! I am a big fan of cross-hatching your hot dogs to bring a crispy edge and richer flavor. This is a solid hot dog but it lost some points for being too greasy. If your stomach is sensitive to grease, this might not be the dog for you.

Not the best dog in the world. The bun was thin and flavorless. The hotdog itself had a good crunch to it, but lacked any real character. It is a good hot dog for the price, sure, but it failed to impress me. The Costco supremacy remains...

This bad boy was TWO BUCKS! Not only is this the most economical hot dog yet to grace this blog, but it is the first commissioned post meaning that I am officially a freelance food blogger. But enough about me, let’s get to the dog. For a price you cannot beat, this hot dog was exactly what I needed after a couple cocktails and some lawn tickets at a concert. It is, admittedly, a simple hot dog as the picture shows. Unassuming. Demure. Gentle. She doesn’t ask for much and she knows that she is a cheap date. That is exactly what earned this hot dog a solid five out of ten stars. I would even go as far as to say it could be a six out of ten dog for the right person. The hot dog itself was surprisingly salty and juicy. The flavor paired nicely with the humble bun. Together, the hot dog was not too hot or too cold, and it was easy to eat. In my opinion, the selling point of this hot dog was that it was not soggy. Nothing ruins a good day faster than a soggy hot dog. I would go as far as to argue that a cheap, greasy snack (in this economy) is exactly what someone needs when they are sitting in the grass after one too many drinks. In many regards, a hot dog is not just a meal but something that interacts with its environment. A hot dog outside is not the same as a hot dog in a restaurant. And boy does eating a hot dog while sitting in the grass slap. At that moment, I was compelled to rank this hot dog higher — after all, is simplicity enough to knock off half of a dog’s points? But I am obligated to write these posts without bias. Are there better hot dogs? Yes. Are there better hot dogs that you can eat for that price? Now, dear reader, that is a better question.

Another day, another dog. This dog was a masterclass on the importance of grease! Today’s particular hot dog was bought at a small grill at a state park in Utah. I don’t have too many specifics on the place other than the fact that many patrons of this state park had advised that I try the hot dog. And I am better for it. The dog and the bun were both perfectly drenched in grease so that each bite dripped onto the paper plate. I gotta say, it was a surprisingly pleasant hot dog. This dog was simple — a crispy and buttered hot dog bun and a juicy dog. It is a simple recipe with a lot of satisfaction. It had a very rich and distinct flavor profile — salty, buttery, the correct ration of bread to meat. The crunch of the dog itself was even closer to a coney dog than I would’ve expected. There was something missing about this hot dog (losing it a total of three stars). After a while, the flavor grew boring. I find the last bite of the hot dog to be a true test of its strength: Can it endure the test of time? Is the hot dog flavorful enough to persist? Does the dog wither and weep after five, ten, maybe even fifteen minutes of sitting untouched? By the last bite, I realized this hot dog had grown boring. The excitement of the grease and buttered crunch against the warm bun tasted like a broken record. Overall, however, this hot dog offered a new spin on the traditional Fourth of July dog—it offered grease, crunchy, and butter, giving a new flavor profile.

Let’s start with what went wrong. I ordered a chili dog and when it arrived, there was no fork and no knife. What? Are there people out there eating a chili dog with their hands? I fear for them. After obtaining the needed knife and fork, the hot dog cut nicely into sections. The first bite left me confused. The flavor—what flavor there was, might I add—didn’t match my expectations. That is okay, I reminded myself, before proceeding on the dog. The more I ate, the clearer the reality of this dog was becoming. The chili was far too sweet and far too little. The unmatched pleasure of a chili dog is the joy one gets in dipping the fries in the overflowing chili. There was barely enough chili for the hot dog! I attempted the crucial fry-dip test nonetheless. The fries were good as a stand alone food; they had the crunch, they were a fun shape, and the salt to potato ratio was perfect. But the fries dipped in the chili had a profoundly unremarkable flavor. After failing the fry test, I persevered. Each bite revealed the truth—this hot dog was far too sweet. I am almost positive they used Hawaiian sweet hot dog buns (criminal), and, once again, the chili wouldn’t even be considered spicy to the most British person on the planet. Moreover, the bun to chili ratio was unfortunate. My last several bites were excess bun with no chili to dip it in. In the hot dog’s defense, the mustard and the white onions were good. The mustard may have needed a little bit more of a liberal squeeze, but its flavor complimented the white onions which had been perfectly chopped and spread across the chili. I give a fair amount of grace to the actual hot dog itself since this restaurant was not in Michigan where coney dogs possess an unmatched crunch. The meat was well above average—thick and tasty. I admit this comes across as scathing. In terms of overall hot dogs I’ve had, it was not bad at all. I would even go as far as to say that I would get this chili dog again.
