caption: Everyone loves a #heartthrob. None more so than the artistic duo #pierreetgilles (active since 1976). Their #airbrushed scenes of wrinkle-free perfection are populated by the sexiest of heartthrobs - both boys and girls - who are often blessed with fun bits of quite prodigious proportions. These idols and the paradisiacal settings in which they are situated (a spiritual hybrid of #bosch’s #gardenofearthlydelights, God’s #eden, #warhol’s #studio54 and a #belami #gayporn set) look like tiny vignettes of augmented reality. And yet all the deception innate to their Image is, in truth, entirely constructed by hand. Pierre shoots the #photograph of their subject and Gilles then embellishes the photograph (now transferred to canvas) with #paint. The scene in which their subjects reside is entirely fabricated by the #gay #artistsand their #studio. There is nothing digital about their poppy, provocative dissimulation. This is a world of saturated fantasy and camp ornamentation produced through the most analogue of means: set design; painting; make up; costume. It’s all work and wigs: fakery that’s real sweat, blood and tears. This work is called “En Plein Coeur (Right Through the Heart)” from 2016 and features the #kpopsuperstar #choiseunghyun (also known as T.O.P.) from the #korean band #bigbang. It seems Mr. Choi, resplendent in black tie, has caused #cupid’s arrow to enter the heart of one outside the pictorial space. The bloody viscera spattered all over his crisp, white shirt is ours. Our #love. Our #death. Our fascination with the glamour of both Eros and Thanatos. #tttop is embraced by bejewelled blooms of red and purple that amplify the Image’s kitschy campness and which resist his #hollywood #badboyIndex. As does his #asian identity. That familiar Sign of the smoking (anti)-hero - part #brando, part Sinatra - now signifies otherness and its power to transform. The stereotype of a caucasian, heterosexual star of the silver screen becomes a glitzy, lavish, exotic love letter to contemporary homoerotica. Ethereal now Real. Shot through the heart, and you’re to blame, you give love a bad name. And, boy, are we fucking living for it. #mcwqueer#bigbangvip
