Final Work - 'At Face Value'

‘Art and Human Nature’ is an interesting read about an author’s stance on contemporary art. It enhanced my knowledge about humanity’s role in the arts and the way we are conveyed through artistic measures. 

This video was shot at Central Station which I think has some pertinence as Central sees thousands of people passing through each day. There are many of forms of human interaction at the station, with commuters accidently running into someone they know, with homeless people asking for change, with charity representatives having a chat etc. 

The composition of the faces made of fresh foliage is really beautiful and well-executed. I really love her use of diverse flowers to achieve a certain image. 

I wanted to explore the relationship between natural and man-made elements so I experiment with plastic shopping bags and flowers. I layered squares of plastic bag and in between these layers placed fresh flowers and leaves. I then sandwiched all of this between two large sheets of paper and ironed it on both sides. The results left a very unnatural image but I found the detail of the bubbles in the plastic and the reaction of the two materials very interesting.

My first experiment recreates Joy’s work in an attempt to see for myself people’s reaction to me pushing the boundaries of their personal space. 

Sydney based Alesandro Ljubicic produces amazing paintings of floral arrangments. His use of bold colour and texture in his paintings make them look life-like and I think they are absolutely beautiful. He captures so well the beauty of nature which has inspired me to use flowers in my final work. 

Exploring different human noises, functions and necessities. I recorded myself eating a big juicy piece of watermelon. The results are very unattractive and pretty gross to listen to but I think it’s interesting how we’re so repulsed by the result of something (sound of chewing) that we were born to do (eat).

These images are of a piece of skin that happened to be peeling. I noticed the very detailed patten in the skin and thought that it related well to my question for this assessment. It allowed me to think about the superficial and materialistic details we as humans use to define ourselves and how we manage to forget how fine and unique the details of our natural bodies are.
