Love how tumblr has its own folk stories. Yeah the God of Arepo we’ve all heard the story and we all still cry about it. Yeah that one about the woman locked up for centuries finally getting free. That one about the witch who would marry anyone who could get her house key from her cat and it’s revealed she IS the cat after the narrator befriends the cat.

I think the most underutilized part of soulmate AU worldbuilding is probably the internet? I know it’s a little unromantic, but objectively speaking the sheer overnumber of dating apps in our REGULAR world—each of which go to great lengths trying to compartmentalize and synthesize a person’s primary traits—indicates that there should be an even greater number of those in a soulmate-verse.

Take “only see the world in your soulmate’s eye color until you touch.” Obviously in the early 2000s there’d be chat rooms for blues-seeking-browns etc, and then dating apps where you can impute your eye color and only match with people of another eye color, and so on. Reality TV shows would also go crazy of course. In the “touch your soulmate and x happens” AUs they’d cast an unmatched bachelor or bachelorette and then fly them all over the country while auditioning hundreds of people who think they might be “the one” to line up and wait for the briefest touch—just in case they might be right.

And the discourse. People would argue, maybe, that apps and shows are somehow disrespectful to the natural process. People who found their soulmate out in the wild may smugly say that real soulmates just find each other, and that apps are a waste of time. IDK. There are a lot of possibilities for how soulmate stuff would intersect with modern daily life.

I love howl’s moving castle, it’s my second favorite ghibli film. But i really would prefer to read about it from the perspective of someone who loves it. My gentle gaze amounts to nothing in the face of the adoration of a fan who could write essays on the how the scenes build upon each other.
