backrooms movie spoilers ///
"you're so quiet what's on your mind"
the way bobby clings so tightly to kat until he realizes he'll drag her down with him, so he lets her go, and she tries so hard to keep holding on to him. the way they were just two college kids with their entire lives ahead of them. the way bobby looked at kat right before being dragged down.
You think you're alone in the room, but are you really?
As an architecture student, I was fascinated by how Backrooms turned architectural psychology into horror.
A lot of people say there wasn't enough horror because there wasn't a monster constantly chasing the characters and because there's no jumpscares, but I don't think they realize the monster was the architecture itself. And also, it's a psychological thriller and borderline horror. There's a difference. Grow up.
The film uses things we rely on to orient ourselves in space like landmarks, hierarchy, rhythm, daylight, scale, and spatial memory, then removes them or distorts them.
1. That's why Casino's don't have windows. It keeps you occupied and lose track of time. They literally distort your perception of time.
2. That's why shopping malls have looping layouts so you're forced to explore around. Like IKEA, you're psychologically “led” through a curated sequence, minimizing shortcuts and maximizing exposure to products.
3. That's why theme parks have carefully hidden service areas, controlled sightlines, immersive “world bubbles" to make you mentally stay inside a narrative environment where outside cues are eliminated.
But with Backrooms, it's manipulation of space and time and everything. All your senses are manipulated. Every room feels slightly familiar but never fully readable, so your brain keeps trying to build a mental map and failing.
What makes it scary isn't what is in the space, but what the space does to the mind. Humans constantly construct cognitive maps to understand where we are, but Backrooms breaks that process.
The circulation goes nowhere, the repetition erases reference points, and the environment sits in that unsettling zone between recognition and alienation. It creates disorientation, isolation, and paranoia without needing anything supernatural.
That is also why the concept went viral. Liminal spaces, dreamcore, whatever you call it. It feels endless, familiar yet unfamiliar, and deeply convincing in its emptiness. The suspense comes from thinking something else must be there with you, even when there is nothing. That uncertainty is the horror.
Adding paranormal elements often weakens it, because the original fear already comes from space itself, not from what might be inside it.
Hell, even the shot of Mary's "neighborhood" fucked me up because it looks exactly like the ones we see online and how it looks unoccupied.
Backrooms is really just architecture and human perception turned into a mechanism of fear.
I also like how Backrooms turns architecture into an allegory for mental health and the human mind, where spatial disorientation mirrors psychological unraveling.
Saw Backrooms last night and something that immediately stood out to me was Clark's decision to use a peg leg in the advert. He's already got the hat, the parrot and the steering wheel, and the shirt helps enough with the pirate image. But he uses a peg leg AND a crutch - disability aids people use because it's harder to get by without them - and they get in his way. They actively make his task harder. And the cherry on top is that he not only refuses Kat's offer to help when the chair (the 'throne') he was sitting on breaks but wanders away from it and tells his employees to clean it up.

I'm not big on biopics and I'm REALLY not big on the Chris Hansen one coming up. Can we just let some things be documentaries PLEASE
forget age gaps or differences in rank or whatever the most potently dangerous power dynamic in any relationship is "people like you more than me"
Small nitpick but I think genderbend!AU writers should take into account how the local social environment influences gender. I say this because cheerleading isn't really a thing in UK girls' schools the way netball and maybe rounders are.

Ppl on hadestown twt (didn’t know that was a thing) are now bringing up fuckass Jasmin savoy brown discourse and I have things to say. It IS bad that Jasmin decided to go back to the scream franchise. She has ALSO been very vocal about the genocide in Palestine. And I just have to wonder, would she be getting even half the amount of shit that she is if she weren’t a black woman??? Don’t think so. People certainly don’t bring up Sophie Thatcher for posting “pray for Israel” on her story. Or Christina Ricci and Melanie Lynskey for recently liking a post that says Israel has a right to exist. Or even Ella Purnell for working for Amazon. It seems to me a case of a woman’s worst crime is being annoying, and the internet has decided that JSB is guilty.
And I’m not saying that the criticism isn’t valid, I think it very much is! but I think it gets to a point where you have to recognize that people are still people. People do fucked up things. People make mistakes and learn. Or maybe they don’t. And Jasmin Savoy Brown is not NEARLY as powerful as you are making it seem. And continuing to harp on minor celebrities will do NOTHING. I have to assume that people keep putting their energy toward celebrity because they still seem touchable, as opposed to the REAL problem being people in GOVERNMENT, BILLIONAIRES, THE ACTUAL NAZIS AND PEDOPHILES ROAMING AROUND. But y’all need to start getting mad in the right direction cause we are literally all going to die and soon. It honestly feels like a cy-op.
ALSO I HAVE MORE TO SAY STILL. Revolution is not and will never be about everyone on earth having the same morality, the same opinions, and the same mind as you. It’s about creating a new system. And all of this bullshit is just distracting from the actual goal of any of this in the first place. It’s less about holding people accountable than it is about having somewhere to put your anger where you think they will feel it. But guess what? You have power! You can direct your voice to things that matter! You can go to protests! You can vote! You can get pissed in a way that I can’t say on a public platform! And you can fucking unionize!!!!!
Anyway this is all very ranty and not really about JSB but more about the recent culture online. Whatever live laugh love read this or don’t
TSITP vs YJ: Who haunts the narrative better?

Not to make real people's issues about media and stuff, but I really wish the higher-ups at Netflix hadn't gutted Everything Now because it could've really reached the people it needed to
you ever have 8,045 bad mental health days in a row
you ever have 8,046 bad mental health days in a row
thats 22 years of bad mental health are you okay
you ever have 8,050 bad mental health days in a row
They’re deactivated now and I really hope they are okay, but my nihilism is telling me something else. :(

One of the things in Heartstopper I have to suspend my disbelief over is Nick and Charlie having a shared form class in Season 3, because they'd be in Y12 and Y11 respectively. Pairing Y10s with Y11s and Y12s with Y13s makes sense (these pairs study GCSEs and A Levels respectively), but Y11 and Y12? That's just for love of the game (ship content)
