after watching wendigoon's video about chris mccandless's life i don't really agree with either "side." chris wasn't some hero to be idolized, and he wasn't an idiot to be mocked. he was a kid who needed help. he was a traumatized kid who walked into the wilderness unprepared all alone and died needlessly. he held onto hope until the very end, if not for his own life than for the meaning his life would carry into the future, but it was hope held in vain. he didn't need to die all alone, scared, and miserable. people in the comments of the video felt inspired by his optimism that continued until the end, but his optimism only makes me sadder for him. this was a deeply troubled kid who hung onto optimism as a coping mechanism. it isn't inspiring, it's tragic.
we as a society failed chris when we refused to acknowledge the abuse he endured as a child. we failed chris when no one tried to get him the help he needed him on his travels. we failed chris by leading him on a life that ended in those woods. and we fail him today by thinking his death was anything but an unnecessary tragedy. he's not a hero. he isn't someone to idolize. he didn't live a fulfilling life that should be commended. a fulfilling life wouldn't have ended with 113 days of solitude that culminated in the completely unnecessary death of a young man.
chris mccandless's story doesn't make me feel happy or inspired. it doesn't make me frustrated or angry with his incompetence. it just makes me feel sad at the injustice of it all.

the fact that i'm no longer the same age as the protagonists of novels and films i once connected to is so heartbreaking. there was a time when I looked forward to turning their age. i did. and i also outgrew them. i continue to age, but they don't; never will. the immortality of fiction is beautiful, but cruel.

For me it’s "The Hill We Climb” by Amanda Gorman. Here are some of my favorite bits that always inspire me.

when summer about to end. The days are getting shorter, the air less humid, and somehow you feel sadder. seeing back to school ads genuinely make you want to die but there’s nothing that can stop the days going by faster and faster. i need help.
