“I can’t believe he sent me a fucking invitation to his wedding,” Kent lamented to Scraps when he stopped by for a few beers. Scraps was good at listening and better at keeping his mouth shut. This was why Kent often spilled his guts to Scraps over Troy.

“Maybe he was trying to be nice,” Scraps suggested. For a guy over six feet and two hundred pounds, he was surprisingly soft-hearted.

“Yeah. Nice. ‘Hey, Kenny, why don’t you come and watch me make out with my husband in front of half the league and my family?’” Kent scoffed. He popped the cap off another beer and brought the bottle to his mouth. The cool rim numbed his upper lip. //Jack invites Kent to his wedding with Bitty. Kent reacts.

Jack knew Kenny was a good player. A really good player. Jack still wanted to be better. “Okay,” he said instead. Masson’s opinion didn’t matter.

“But this will be good. Captain and alternate,” Masson said.

Jack looked back up.

“You’re a better leader with Parse at your side,” he added. “You can learn from each other. I think you’ll be a tough pair to beat once you get a handle on it.” //As my friend put it, Jack and Kent unintentionally say: I can make him worse.

Title: the future is a wishing well (and i’m gonna invest) (Part 4 of Lunar Years) (AO3)

Summary: The thing about Alexei was that his background gave him a leg up in some circumstances. He’d been taught by two of the best skaters in Russia, for one. But the biggest benefit, in Alexei’s mind, was his experience in reading people. He’d learned to gauge sincerity more accurately than a thermometer from watching his parents’ interviews, between both the interviewers and their need to pose for the media. His parents had carefully crafted personas with just enough information to be interesting but not enough to lead to prying. They kept a cool distance, but they made it seem as if they were open books. Alexei mastered the strategies well, which was good, as he fully intended to play hockey in America one day.

Kent Parson had a fantastic media presence. He used it in front of everyone, including scared future rookies who were looking to the previous year’s biggest success story for support.

Maybe it was petty, but Alexei thought that was pretty shitty. //Tater learns how much he wants to know Kent Parson.

Title: always on my team (Part 5 of Lunar Years) (AO3)

Summary: "Does he love you?" Mama asked when Alexei finally told her about the man he was in love with. Alexei was an on or off kind of guy, and he had been on Kent Parson from the moment he'd heard him talk about the benefits of investing and creating a marketable image.

Alexei spluttered and talked about his team instead and how they hoped to make it to the Cup Finals again, this time with him playing. By the time they hung up, Mama had either forgotten her question or given up on receiving an answer. Alexei would have bet on the latter because his mother was not a stupid woman.

He only wished she'd never asked at all.

Kent never said the words. Alexei somewhat doubted he ever would. //Kent does not say, “I love you.” Alexei falls anyway.
