The new semester of classes at New York University would be starting up in a couple weeks and the university had set up several guest lecturers before the start of the new term as graduation would follow in six months for seniors and interns and job opportunities were always worth talking about. Reed was there that day talking to the engineering department about his work with the Baxter Foundation, an independent science research company that he was leading. They were always looking for young and bright students to join them as he talked about some of the ongoing studies they had going. The students seemed to listen in as he finished his presentation and thanked everyone for coming. People started filing out of the room and as Reed cleaned up his things, someone from the seats stood up and approached him. He glanced up, "Did you have a question, or did I bore you to tears and you're just waking up?" He asks, "It's hard to judge the audience."

Lois had been stifling a bit of a yawn over the past half hour, as she made her way upwards from the seats. Sheâd own to it. âI might have power napped through some of the technical jargon,â she said, with a shrug and a smile that said, oops, guilty! A glance down at her notes would reveal a few places in which sheâd written blah blah blah, thingamabob, sciencewhatsit. She could fact check all that later. âBut other than that, it was refreshing to listen to a genius who doesnât seem to be of the evil variety. Believe me, in my line of business thatâs gotten disturbingly rare. Donât suppose I could get an interview with you? Lois Lane, Daily Planet.â Lois introduced herself along with an outstretched hand, flashing her press pass in the other.
Glass beer bottles clinked together as the bartender on duty began to wipe down the countertops with a damp cloth. He uttered something about closing soon but John couldnât hear him, too busy nursing the same glass of whiskey for the last half hour. He knew if he had any more to drink that evening heâd find himself in the ER with alcohol poisoning. Which, in retrospect, didnât sound like a terrible place to be. Not after he was thrown out of the bar by a significantly larger man, who didnât seem as keen as John to engage in amicable conversation. Heâd settled onto the curb outside, his clothes tousled as he reached into his shirt pocket for a cigarette. âEnjoy the show?â John asked before taking a long drag, blowing out the smoke slowly as he looked up at the bystander. âDonât tell me youâre looking to bum a cigarette. Afraid itâs my last one. I suppose we could share if youâd like, granted you have something to offer in return.â

Leaning against the bar, Lois had been waiting outside for ten minutes, expecting exactly the scene she saw now, the exact silhouette, all dirty blonde hair, sharp coat. She took a step out of the shadows, and then sat down on the kerb. âConstantine,â she greeted briskly. âYou know, I think you might have been thrown out of more respectable establishments than I have.â Which was saying a lot, really. It actually made Lois trust him - as far as she ever really trusted anyone. But anyone who was good at causing trouble was someone who understood that there were times when trouble had to be caused. Lines needed to be crossed. Rules broken.Â
âWell, actually...â she held out her own pack of cigarettes, dangling it in front of his. âIâm down to two. Long day. Donât tell my doctor. How about a trade? My two here are all yours ... if you throw in some of the usual information.â The thing was, nobody knew the magic community like Constantine. And given the the one person in the world that Lois wanted to protect above all others had a weakness against magic ... well, Lois liked to keep touch with Constantine, when she could.Â
âEveryone thatâs tried to fix me is either dead or wish they were. So how about we stop trying to therapize me so that we can get back to why youâre here?â One of Livâs bioflex armâs retrieved her cup of coffee so that she could take a sip. She cringed at the taste of pumpkin spice, the tentacle arm recoiling in kind and dumping the rest of the mugâs contents into the sink across the room.
âEither you have a warrant or you need to get out before you get on my bad side.â

âSo .... should I quote you as âno commentâ, then?â Lois asked idly, unmoving. It took more than a not-so-veiled threat to ruffle her at this stage in her career. Sheâd made her name off never blinking, never backing down. It sent Perry Whiteâs blood pressure levels skyrocketing, but as Lois always reminded her editor, the number of hits the Daily Planet got compared to their competitors skyrocketed as well.Â
âOf course, I suppose my next question is obvious. Is there a reason Iâd need a warrant?â That entirely passed over the question of if Lois actually had the power to get one, which was decidedly a no. But she didnât need to remind Doctor Octavius of that. It had taken a lot of pressure on the Alchemax higher-ups to get Lois in this room, and she really wanted to be in this room. An itch for a story never went away once sheâd gotten it. âAfter all, donât you moonlight as a high school teacher?â The question was innocently posed, but leading. Lois quirked an eyebrow, âSurely you donât have anything to hide?â

Kate was outside practicing her archery she needs to stay sharp because you never know what's going to happen hitting every target in sight because she does not miss. "And that's how it's done." she said to herself.

âNice,â Lois said, with a nod. Her eyes followed the line from where she stood at a safe distance from Kate, and down towards the bullseye. Right on target. She gave a low whistle, impressed. âIâve always been more of a hit âem with the old one-two kind of woman myself,â she said, punching her fists in the air along with the words to demonstrate. âBut ...â she gave the target another appreciative look, and then smiled at Kate. âMaybe you could give me some tips. A girl never knows when sheâs going to need to go a little Robin Hood, right? How does it go, steal from the rich, give to the poor?â With a little smirk, she added, "Leave me alone in a room with Lex Luthor for an hour or two, and I think I could go for a little target practise myself.âÂ
