"Is it the distortion of human nature, or the decay of morality? What happened that made me so sharp-tongued and mean? I don't recommend it, nor do I welcome you to find out the reasons."
Reading Passage: "A Night at Qingshui Stream" by Chen Mingyun
The sound of wind and rain had faded away. I lay wide awake, without a trace of drowsiness.
A faint light crept through the window lattice. The smell of grains, burning leaves, and tung oil mixed with the fresh scent of the newly changed towel, blending into a rich and profound rural atmosphere. It had stopped raining outside. The old man sharing my bed was already fast asleep, emitting deep, calm breathing. Indeed, the old man was relaxed and peaceful. "Yes," I thought, "the old people are always comfortable and tranquil."
The old-fashioned warmth was heartening. Just one sentence from the old man, "This is Master Driver Zhang," and the whole family treated you like family. A misunderstanding. They had mistaken me for someone else...
The old man turned to close the door, shutting the violent wind and rain outside; afterwards, the small kerosene lamp emitted a peaceful glow. Third Sister got busy pouring tea and boiling water.
"Master Zhang must be starving," the old woman said. She came to wipe the table and set the dishes. Her hair was combed smoothly after her bun, showing a diligent appearance, her face full of smiles: "Our countryside meals are always late, unlike meals at your work unit." I was pushed to the seat of honor facing the door.
They did their utmost: tender yellow fried corn kernels, savory pickled cabbage head, and they even slaughtered a duck... It suddenly occurred to me that maybe the old man wanted something from me, such as buying some coal, and needed my help? Maybe he was too embarrassed to ask! I took the initiative to ask—
"Coal?" the old woman asked.
The old woman thought for a moment and looked probing at the old man.
"It's also good to save on firewood!" The old man said in a gloomy tone.
I finally understood that they didn't ask for anything from me! I was a bit at a loss, what was all this for?
It was probably because they were content. Thanks to today's good policies, they had plenty to eat and drink, with smiles blossoming on their faces.
The rain was still falling...
My original plan was to rush to Shuanghe Town by tonight to stay overnight. The car had broken down. It was getting dark, dark clouds were gathering, a heavy rain was about to pour down! The highway was empty and desolate. Only my own car and a Huanghe brand truck loaded with full logs remained.
The old man returned after hoeing the fields. Seeing the situation, he sincerely invited me. I followed him and ran up the slope to his roofed porch, and the rain poured down...
Third Sister had become acquainted with me and told me that once, another driver had voluntarily helped the old man and his wife load a dozen miles of wood on his tricycle; that driver was strange, when the car approached, he slammed on the brakes sharply and shouted "Get on!" As soon as you got off the car, "whoosh," he was gone, and he didn't even let you see his face.
"It rained right after returning home that day." The old man, who had been quietly listening to our chat, interrupted. The muddy light in his eyes flickered and shimmered. The old man was recalling, his voice full of emotion. What he recalled was nothing more than a tiny bit of help he received from others, but how can you forget a kindness? (Hmm, are you sure it's not something that's left unspoken?)
"My father," Third Sister smiled and glanced at the old man, "he talks about this as soon as he has free time; a grateful heart is a good thing! I've heard it all many times, a truck, a 'square-headed shell,' a car—"
I was shocked. The truck I drove was the peasant's "square-headed shell," a Yellow River truck!
Outside, the wind was still blowing and the rain was still falling, but inside the house it was all warmth and serenity. To be sure, my spending the night at the old man's house was a very accidental coincidence, yet this stormy night made me feel the hardships of life for the first time.
Right, no matter how difficult it was, I had to speak up loudly: "Old man, it wasn't me!" I begged for their forgiveness.
After breakfast, I said goodbye.
"Old man! Old woman!" I summoned my courage and spoke...
The old man figured out my meaning and nodded, "I recognized it a long time ago." His gaze became gentler, "The other driver was an outsider; you are our Jiang'an native, right? Your accent is very different."
"Ah," the old man waved his hands repeatedly, "certainly, it certainly should be."
I left, stumbling several steps, my mind muddled like a mess of silk threads, unable to think of a way out.
After crossing the stone bridge, I slowly turned back to look at the old man's tiled house. Hidden among the verdant bamboo, the house faced the ramp, and on the pink wall were three large characters written in earth red: "Qingshui Stream." After the rain, the green leaves of the whole world were adorned with glittering water droplets, making the scenery crystal clear...
