✧ ⸻ is that AMBER MIDTHUNDER? no? that’s GERTRUDE "GERTIE" LOCKE? are you sure? she has been here for SEVEN YEARS and they now live in DOWNTOWN. no wonder i missed them! it seems that they are also TWENTY-EIGHT and that they work as BUDTENDER at THE GOOD VIBE. are you telling me that they are adventurous and determined, but also stubborn and wily. i guess it makes sense they would remind people of feeling the breeze through your hair, singing fleetwood mac songs at karaoke, late night cry sessions over a bottle of tequila, endless roads, and a photo album with torn up photos. now i can’t wait to meet them !
Gertie doesn't remember much about her parents. They were sadly taken away from her when she was a small child. In an instant her life changed and she was sent to live with her aunt on her father's side. Because she was so young she adjusted fairly quickly. The problem was that her aunt wasn't the best fit for raising a kid. She had her own troubles. Gambling, drinking, and a few too many questionable relationships. Her aunt treated her alright but relied on her to fill the financial gaps in her life. It just became difficult for someone who was still going to school to try and clean up her aunt's messes.
Growing up she felt like she got to know her dad through stories and his family didn't shy away from talking about him. The problem was that none of them knew her mom well before the accident and it meant that they didn't have anything to go off of. Gertie struggled with this for much of her life because she didn't even have a picture of her. All her dad's family knew was that she was from some small town in Colorado. Gertie decided early on that she would find a way to get to Deer Valley one day.
After graduating high school she stuck around for a few years. Not because she wanted to. But because she needed to save up money. Without school getting in the way, she was able to put aside money for herself so that she could one day leave. Just shy of her 21st birthday she had fight with her aunt because she realized that she had found her secret stash and was skimming money from it. With all the money that was left, she gathered up a handful of belongings and ditched the only life she knew.
Staying in Deer Valley was never her intention. She wanted to learn more about her mom and her family but she ended up finding herself feeling at home for once. Truth is, there still wasn't a lot to learn. It seemed that the trail lead to a dead end. But she found a few people who remembered her and through them, she tried to piece together an image of who her mom was. She wears her mom's yearbook photo in a locket around her neck and despite having not met yet, she wears her dad's on the other side.
Gertie hasn't left since she arrived seven years ago. She has made friends and found herself at peace with being a resident. Though she still keeps in contact with some of her dad's family, she finds it's best she doesn't stay in touch with her aunt. Could she forgive and forget? Maybe. But at the end of the day she doesn't really want to.

IF ONLY ERIKA HAD THAT TYPE OF MENTALITY MOST OF THE TIME. She didn’t see why people would go around being little shits to people who were offering them a service, but then again, she had been dealing with white men and politicians in general for most of her life, so it figures she had developed a thicker skin. ❝ I’m afraid I’m not as evolved as you. ❞ She told the younger bud tender. ❝ Glad to see things are alright. Is business okay? ❞
"Those kind of idiots just like to get a rise out of you so they can feel justified writing their lousy Google reviews," she remarks, "but maybe he'll just go home, get stoned, and forget about what a bitch he thinks I am." At least that's the outcome she's hoping for. Gertie gives a little shrug, "business is booming, or should I say blooming?" She takes two pens from the register and does a little drumming motion, "badum-pshh." @alkcline
SMALL TOWNS LIKE DEER VALLEY HAD A WAY OF MAKING YOU FEEL LIKE YOU BELONGED. However, they also had a way of exposing everyone’s lives as if privacy didn’t matter. Maybe that’s why so many people stayed? Because they could be themselves without masks or they could be a different person than they used to before they moved there. Sometimes, Deer Valley’s biggest problem was their tourists. Entitled people who would come in every once in a while, to get away from their busy city lives and they would treat the residents like we owed them something.
❝ You don’t have to be nice to everybody, you know? ” Erika told Gertie, once the commotion with the tourist seemed to have ended. ❝ I know I have an image to uphold, but even I would’ve told them to stick up their asses. ❞ She chuckled softly. ❝ You alright there, dear? ❞
It's not that she didn't agree with Erika, after all most people didn't deserve to get their heads bit off by disgruntled customers, but she just felt like it wasn't worth it to get just as riled up. "Yeah, I know," she says, shrugging, "but sometimes it's better to just kill them with kindness." (And hope they die a slow painful death...) "I'm good," Gertie insists, "it's nothing I can't handle." Now if things had been flipped and Erika was on the tail end of a dick customer, she would have leapt over the counter and given the guy what he deserved, but when it came to her own wellbeing, she felt it better to let it go. "May he have the day he deserves and all that," she remarks, slamming the register shut.
jamie feared where gertie's line of questioning was headed, confirmed only when she stepped backwards to make room, waiting for her dance partner to make a move. he grimaced. "you're serious." it wasn't so much a question as it was an observation; he was waiting for her to burst out laughing at the first sign of him buying into the joke, but she really was serious. he made a quick motion of pretending to jump off of the mezzanine, attempting to throw his leg over the railing, but pushed himself off before he could draw any unwanted attention to himself. he sighed and dragged his feet towards gertie until he was standing in front of her.
"just for the record, we're actually sober." yet another bemused observation as he held out his hands for her to take, twirling her into position so her hand was behind her back for the skater promenade.
"Yeah, duh," she says, refusing to back down, "we're in this together now." Gertie bites her lip at the mention of being sober, "I mean, I'm not drunk, but..." she motions puffing on an imaginary joint. There's a bit of guilt that washes over her as she admits this, knowing that Jamie hasn't exactly had the best experience with addiction. Not that this helps any, but she's so used to taking a few puffs before leaving anywhere that she didn't really think about it before meeting up with Jamie. Maybe, Gertie worries, she's kind of being a bad friend. "Fuck. Is that okay? I promise I'm not going to drink tonight." @derailmvnts

⋆.° ᝰ.ᐟ maxine watches gertie in amusement. she helps herself to a piece of baguette and pairs it with the burrata. at the other’s question, she glances up. “ it’s brie. ” she’s quick to identify and respond. “ between you and me, it’s also one of my favorites. it’s just so buttery and creamy. and the rind is edible. gives it a slightly different taste that i think complements it really well. ” the admission that blue cheese wasn’t her favorite has her shaking her head fondly. “ i totally get what you mean. i’m not a huge fan of it either, ” max admits, lowering her voice to avoid any prying ears. “ there’s just something about the taste. and not to turn you off from it but i’m pretty sure the blue chunks are mold. edible mold but still mold nonetheless. i never understood the hype behind it. i swear, it’s between this and goat cheese that people really seem to love. ”
"You can eat this part?" she questions, pointing to the rind, "I'm trusting you with my life here, okay? I don't want to look a fool in front of these people." As much as she's enjoying herself, she does feel like she's out of her element a little bit and the wine is starting to hit her. Taking the smallest of bites, she nods her head approvingly, "okay, what the hell? I thought it'd taste like wax or something, but it's actually really good."
Face scrunched, she judges the mold, "yeah, I had my suspicions." Just confirms to her that rich people are weird. "Now which one of these is goat cheese again?"
That she never really commits to anything. Always picking up hobbies without following through to see them to the end. Romantic relationships fleeting.
No career prospects or goals. Sometimes she worries she isn't making much of her life but never knows what direction she's supposed to be going.
[ 🧨 ]ㅤ.ㅤwhat’s the quickest way to set them off, even if they hide it well ?
Bold to assume that she hides it well. Hell hath no fury like Gertie when she's been set off. Kind of goes without saying but injustices of any kind. Anyone judging her aunt too much for not being great. On a less serious note when people cut her off in traffic.
he makes a face, twisting his features into mild disgust that threatens to stretch into a stupid grin when gertie accuses him of envying his aunt’s square dancing trophy. so what if he is? just a little bit, though. he’s never won a trophy or a medal in his life, not even a ‘good job’ ribbon, not even in school, and they used to give ‘em away like candy to build up confidence even when the kids did a shitty job. so maybe it’s easier to be a hater than a trier. at least he knows his failure won’t be patronized.
the triers sure do look like they’re having a lot of fun, though. even when they’re dancing wrong.
“no, yeah, that’s probably it.” he nods, half-assedly convincing themselves of why they’re not participating in the night’s activities, simultaneously amused by their pretense, like watching everything from the mezzanine might make them better than everyone else, and pitying the thought they could possibly be better than everyone else. “do you really wanna see me dance, g?” jamie challenges gertie with a quirked brow. come to think of it, “maybe it’s actually better for everybody if we miss out.”
"Actually, I would," she says, a devilish smirk etched across her features, "are you scared you might actually enjoy yourself?" Moving away from her position, she encourages him to do the same, "come on, let's show them how it's done." Gertie talks a lot of confidence for someone who hasn't actually square danced since elementary school (a gym requirement that left her locking arms with someone who had sweaty inner elbows).
dell was no expert on cars, but she was pretty sure they weren't supposed to make that noise. stress sweat started to bead on her forehead as she pulled over on the side of the quiet road. she didn't exactly have the funds to be calling a tow these days. "you're good," she assured herself. "you can handle it." she vigorously shook her head at the slowing passing car, shouting out, "i've got it! everything is under control! i do not need help!"
Despite the yells coming from the side of the road, Gertie doesn't hesitate to make a stop and pull over. She might not know much about cars, other than to get her oil checked every once in awhile, but she sure as hell isn't going to let her be all alone while she waits for help. Gertie puts her hazards on before getting out of her car, "I'm all for miss independent and all that, but we live in a shitty world and I'm not going to let a girly be stranded all by herself." Getting out her phone, she wonders where to even begin, "don't suppose you have a mechanic on deck, do you?" She assumes not. @dell-barker

"Be honest," Gertie starts off, a tone perhaps a bit too serious for what follows, "is the key to good cooking really just a shit ton of butter?" She's no master chef, but in her experience unless you're making cookies, there's no such thing as too much butter.
A beat, "and would you try a rodent's food if Remy was the chef?"

"I know it's probably because I'm just really baked right now, but you know what these Oreos are missing? Raspberry lemonade." Gertie doesn't wait to be judged before pleading her case, "I'm not a freak, okay? I'm not going to start dipping my Oreos in lemonade. It's just lemonade is so refreshing and I think it would really hit the spot."
jamie ft. gertie @lockexit
the square dancing competition at the barn.
his ban is lifted for the night, on account of the barn not being a nightclub during the square dancing competition, something he’d argued on a technicality to the bouncer who hated his guts since the moment he’d started a small fire for attempting to make a molotov cocktail and calling the bouncer ‘easter island head’ and kicking him in the shin when he got dragged outside for it. in his defense (which really isn’t a defense and more of a weak attempt at an explanation), he was totally geeked out. his parents had paid for the damages in exchange for keeping the cops out of it. that, and a lifetime ban seemed like an appropriate compromise. he’s trying to be good on this one night only exception, staying mainly out of sight on the mezzanine with a non-alcoholic punch in his hand as he watches the square dancing contest unfold on its second round.
“what are they even dancing for?” jamie says, gaze cast down towards the couples. “all you get is a dumb trophy. hell, my aunt has one, and she just uses it to hold spare change in her house.” downstairs, a couple fumbles, causing them to knock into another and eliciting some laughs from the audience. "i bet you and i would crush it, though," he adds, glancing towards gertie. "why didn't we join again?"
"Sounds like you're secretly jealous of your aunt's trophy," she teases, "and honestly? I'm kind of jealous, too." Her own aunt probably would have just used it as an ashtray. Gertie can't help but watch the dancers with judgment, "half of them are dancing in a circle. It's square dancing. Not ring around the Rosie." Gertie sighs, "probably because we're way too nice and didn't want to upstage anybody." As much as she's giving everyone shit, she's actually pretty fond of the sense of community that these sort of functions bring out in people. "Are we seriously experiencing FOMO right now?" @derailmvnts
"no, there's no fee to enter the square dance competition." she repeats for what feels like the fifth time tonight – being the prompto friend to cemre had taken her in a lot of places over the years, and while the barn is in no way unfamiliar to her, she didn't expect to have to serve as clerk for the sign ups and judge to the competition that's happening in a bit. "are you close to making a decision? this thing is starting in twenty minutes, and we're supposed to tell you to warm up first."
"Oh, uh... I don't have a partner," she responds, "I mean, I guess you'd probably assign me one, but how do I know this isn't rigged? I don't want to be paired up with someone who can't dance." It's not Gertie's intention to waste anyone's time, but she didn't really have any intentions of joining. Now she feels kind of obligated though. @witchdances

⋆.° ᝰ.ᐟ a wine and cheese night is something that’s right up her alley. so when maxine first heard about it, she didn’t hesitate to register for the event immediately. she plops a small piece of gouda into her mouth, letting the flavor melt and dissipate on her tongue before she reaches over for the small glass of malbec. “ i quite like this one. the gouda has this almost nutty, caramelized flavor that goes with how fruity and bold the malbec is, ” maxine muses to [ your muse ]. “ do you have any favorites ? better yet, any that you don’t like ? ”
"Totally," Gertie responds, taking a too big gulp of her glass of wine. It's evident that she's never actually been wine tasting before and has missed the part where she's supposed to be sipping the wine. As for the cheese, she thinks it all smells a little funky but she doesn't want to be rude. Somehow she suspects that the weirder it smells the more expensive it actually it is. "What's this one called again?" she asks, holding up a piece of brie, "it's my favorite." As for her least favorite, she spots a slice of bleu cheese, "Yeah, sorry, but I know what those little blue chunks are and I'm not really into it." Gertie hasn't even tried it. She's just had it on her salads (on accident) and feels hostile towards the cheese. @ard0rs
