Clit and Natasha have been married for years.

They got married a bit after he got her into SHIELD, for something practical like less paperwork or something like that.

Maybe to get her a green card, but honestly not really. Natalia doesn’t need those things, she’ll just become Natasha.

UNLess you want it like “look, just so they don’t question the alliance change, lets get married”

The only people who were there were Nick Fury and Phil Coulson. One of those two did the ceremony the other was a witness.

Maria Hill is one of the few people who know how they got married.

… or that they even are married.

She makes sure they get an anniversary present.

They’ve gotten married at least three other times for undercover jobs.

That’s not counting the countless ones where their identities are married from their very beginning.

They have this mutual agreement that if either of them want to get married, they’ll just get a divorce and be done with it.

Not that any of their other relationships have ever become serious.

With time, they’ve realized that they actually really love each other.

It took them years to verbalize it.

By then they had been basically monogamous for a long time.

Coulson/Fury offered to renew their vows.

Maria sends a memo every once in a while when everyone has free time. Likey… hey… perfect moment right? I’ll bring the cake.

They’re still pretty open in their relationship, specially during missions:

“Honey, I gotta flirt with this guy for work,” Natasha informs him every time someone, Coulson, brings up that they’re still married.

They don’t really see the point of rings, like if they even had some they were either candy rings or toys and Clint probably got them half joking.

Natasha honestly doesn’t see the point of marriage itself?

People get divorced/cheat all the time?

She has been married/divorced/widowed plenty of times without going with a ceremony.

Although they never meant for it to happen, it has become one of the best kept secrets of SHIELD

Why does it not show up in their personnel files?

…Maria Hill has heard Fury refer to the day she found out as the Incident. She made sure a second one will never happen.

They never told the rest of the Avengers? They eventually suspect they are together, obviously

I don't know if these still work, but it was the only number I had off the top of my head. I blame cell phones. In the Forties we knew everybody's number by heart.

Based on the date this phone's shining at me, I'm missing about two years. You'd think that would stop bothering me after decades of lost time, but nope. Still a kick in the gut. You know, it was kind of nice, for a second. Forgetting we live in a world without Captain America. Then I remembered. They left me that. Whoever's pulling my strings sure has a sick sense of humor.

No it’s not. They’re both canonically queer; he’s gay (because his source material is Arnie Roth, a gay Jew) and she’s aroace. This erasure is disgusting, and in my opinion, so was the Tony-Pepper relationship, but I won’t get into that.
