I've seen a lot of talk of Zosia being characterized as an individual when it comes to fanworks/discussions/shipping. but I'd argue that like, the main appeal of Carol and Zosia's relationship to me is that Zosia is basically an eldritch horror wearing human skin and Carol is fully aware of it. Zosia is the lure of an angler fish but also Carol's only current option for a companion.

This was one of my favorite moments in the episode. Because we can see why the virus would be appealing to everyone else in this scene, right? Koumba explains it pretty succinctly, and on top of that, there’s also cultural differences. I won’t try to speak for other cultures, but America is extremely individualistic, and Carol is a prime example. Freedom of choice and freedom of expression are central American ideals. But maybe for the other people in the room, what the virus is offering is a different kind of freedom. Freedom from discrimination, freedom from the threat of political violence, maybe even freedom from struggling to put food on the table. We don’t know their individual backgrounds — we only know Carol’s, which is a very privileged one, at least in regards to race and class. At the same time, we understand why Carol believes what she does. For queer people, the freedom to be different is necessary to our existence. But the way Carol is communicating her beliefs with the others — she isn’t respecting their freedom to choose, their freedom to be different from her. So she’s playing a sort of ideologically imperialist role, even as she’s arguing against the virus, which is also a metaphor for imperialism.
