he is noted to have major behavioral issues. he frequently refuses food and medication (for his joints, which are degraded from age and working conditions in his youth). As he is an incredibly stubborn hybrid and would literally go to any length of defiance when frightened, the staff often avoid pushing him too much. He is finnicky with his eating habits, has an irregular appetite, and prefers to be left alone entirely in his cage to sleep. He dislikes bath time and any scenario in which he needs to be handled is expected to be EXTREMELY difficult for any and all involved staff members.

surprisingly, he is quiet and almost agreeable with other hybrids. he keeps to himself, is not easily agitated by hybrids in the cages beside his, and rarely finds himself in conflict with others besides staff. Given he is a canine hybrid, however, it is not uncommon for dominance displays to occur. In response, Fyodor typically challenges the display but shows minimal interest in the interaction overall if it does not involve physically agitating him.

thought i would take a few minutes and actually, cohesively, write down some of my ideas with this au. if you know me i love to branch off with ideas so plenty of this could branch off or be partially recycled into other au concepts.

anyways, in this au Fyodor is in his mid-60s, he is a former military hybrid and was a part of one of the "early" waves of hybrids being introduced into the military (prior to the general public) as a smarter multitool compared to regular dogs. Fyodor is a belgian malinois and was trained from a young age in his specialty/mos which was probably either bomb-sniffing or SAR in combat zones. i imagine he saw combat and got injured several times. he had unthinking loyalty--he's definitely thrown himself in harms way to play human shield for his handler many times and received several medals for his job and bravery. he was a very 'good boy'.

however at the point of his retirement he has been used and pushed very hard by the military. he has damage, physically, mentally. he has ptsd and frequent traumatic nightmares. he is only retired because the joint degradation is severe enough that it is beginning to impact his work, despite how much he tries to hide it.

at this time, hybrids are still very new to the public. they were only introduced maybe fifteen or twenty years ago. they are not granted any rights or autonomy. they cannot legally live alone. they must be owned (certified with adoption papers) by a human owner or handler. black market selling isn't cracked down on quite yet. the military doesn't have proper protocol for retiring its hybrids. a lot of fyodor's generation didn't survive to retirement age. none of his handlers want him and he is crated and transported to a hybrid shelter, which have popped up as hybrid populations have grown and people realize that they are much, much more complex than dogs or cats to care for.
