This is part of a long-running narrative where we pretend that mutilating aninals for profit is actually somehow in their best interests. We make the exact same claim about de-beaking chicks and de-horning calves, all three usually standardly performed with no anasthetic. Cannibalisation is not a normal behaviour, and the idea that it is wouldn’t be taken seriously in any other context besides farming. Pigs have their tails cut off because the cramped and overcrowded conditions they are kept in is extremely stressful; cannibalisation is a stress behaviour.

Farmers don’t do the to be cruel, it’s just way cheaper to cut their tails off so they won’t do this than to actually provide a suitable space where they can indulge their natural behaviours. It’s exactly like dogs biting each other’s tails because of stress aggression, and choosing to resolve that by cutting them off rather than address the actual problem. Note that pigs in sanctuaries don’t need to have their tails cut off any more than pet chickens need de-beaking. These mutilations are is not in the best interests of animals in any way.
