torture
I sent the letter. It took weeks to arrive, so long that in the meantime they texted me finally, saying the were sorry for being out of touch, saying they ālove and value our friendship.ā (Iāve wondered if there was significance in the shift from āI love youā to āI love our friendship.ā Seems like there would be.) They said they wanted to hang out, though nothing materialized. I wasnāt sure theyād gotten the letter until one day they mentioned theyād received it and were āso excited to read it.ā I said Iād written it a while back so they knew it wasnāt recent. They didnāt respond, and a few days later I said I hoped the letter didnāt make them uncomfortable. No response until 9 days after their last message, a reply to my suggestion of checking out a drone show downtown: āIām all in.ā But then no follow up, no meet up. The only thing I had to hold on to was that at least they werenāt put off by my letter. I was leaving the country for a while & let them know my availability if they wanted to meet up before. Silence. When I got back, I texted as I was leaving the airport that I was back & they were welcome to join me at an outdoor play this weekend, or any other time this week because Iād love to see them. I wasnāt expecting a timely response, if anything, but then: āYes that sounds wonderful. Iām sorry Iāve been out of touch. Would it be cool if I brought a date?ā It feels like the people I love & care about keep coming up with new ways to torture me.
