βYes, thatβs the whole point- the structural integrity would be bloody abysmal if you did it like that.β Mars bit back a groan as he listened to the client heβd been working with over the phone for the past hour keep insisting on the most oddly shaped barristers heβd ever heard of. Mars had so many things to do- in fact, heβd been jotting down lists on his phone for the next ammunitions order and how it would coincide with which construction shipment. Dates had to be perfect, men had to be readyβ¦ the man on speakerphone was still prattling along and Mars head a knock, frowning. It was an odd time for anyone to come knocking on his door, and he didnβt have any more appointments.
He had already gotten a bit more comfortable as the day wore on- shirt sleeves rolled up, body language far less formal.Β βListen Rod,Β βs been an absolute joy but weβve been at it for over an hour now. HowΒ βbout I call you on Tuesday, yeah? After Iβve sent you the mock-ups. If you still want those barristers after you see my ideas, weβll regroup, alright? Alright. Cheers, mate. Have a good one.β The phone was promptly hung up and he got himself up with a grunt, trying to fix himself up a bit. The man was tall, somewhat burly, and had perpetual bags under his eyes at this point. The door was tugged open and-Β
βLiz.β He stated in surprise, his voice softer than intended as the image of Lara in her hospital bed rushed through his mind.Β ββ¦What a surprise, um, come in, please.β He held out an arm to her, giving her a squeeze as he stepped back to let her in.Β βDid you get lost on your way back from lunch?β He asked, seeing the wrapped sandwich in her hand.Β
"mars !" and it's so awkward. she truly, truly wished there was a world in which their interaction could be normal. alas, that was not the world they lived in. now or ( probably ) ever. "sorry if i'm intruding on anything," she had a habit of doing so, and if he were upset with her for that, he'd be totally valid, it probably wouldnβt change anything she did, but it would be valid.
her nosiness was easily turned on -- this time, subtly, of course. this was a friend(ish) she was snooping on, and it was a concerned visit. honestly, she hadnβt expected to be let in. but when she didβ¦ lots of papers, a phone that still looked warm, and mars wasnβt in any better shape. βoh no, um, this is for you !β she reaches out her hand to give the aforementioned meal to him, βitβs nothing much, just an italian sub, and a Dr. Pepper.β mostly, it was what she likes after a long day, but whatever, itβs the thought that counts, right ? βjust wanted to make sure you were eating ! i know how busy these days can get so... yeah !β
