As a prelude to the âSongs from a Hatâ concert, Banderas himself took the stage to recall how, when he first arrived in New York in 1985, the streets were filled with posters of Patti LuPone, but he didnât have âa pennyâ to go see her musicals at the time.
And as fate would have it, at her first concert in Spain, the opening number was âInvisible,â from the Broadway musical âWomen on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdownâ (2010), based on Pedro AlmodĂłvarâs film of the same name, which LuPone celebrated with a shout of âfantĂĄsticoâ in Spanish.
Another of the nightâs highlights came with the performance of âDonât Cry for Me Argentina,â from the musical âEvitaâ (1979), the show that forever changed her career and made her âa star". Also memorable was the song âCalling You,â known to audiences from the film âBagdad CafĂ©,â and âLonely Town,â about which the artist lamented that lyrics like that are no longer written.
She dedicated "Being Alive," from the musical âCompany,â to Antonio Banderas, who was seated in the stalls; a title well-known on this stage because it is one of the Broadway classics that the Malaga-born actor has directed and starred in in Spain. LuPone also sang âMoon Riverâ and, toward the end of the concert, delighted the audience by revisiting another legendary title, âWest Side Story,â with the song "Something's coming".

The side profile.
"Her voice, her intelligence, her strength. Her wit and her unwavering dedication to artistic excellence have made her a unique figure in the history of musical theatre. Throughout her extraordinary career, she has not only elevated the art form of musical theatre, but has also reminded both audiences and fellow professionals that the stage remains a place of intelligence, passion, elegance, danger, humour and emotional honesty. Thank you very much."

Patti LuPone: âWhat bothers me most about Broadway these days is the volume: everything is too loud.â
Antonio Banderas stands at the entrance to his Caixabank Soho Theater, facing that bloodless firing squad of photojournalists. At his side is a petite woman with short hair, an aquiline nose, and a gaze thatâs as smiling as it is curious. Itâs hot in MĂĄlaga, and both have chosen brightly colored clothes with eye-catching patterns. They laugh at the coincidence, and Banderas introduces his companion: âThis is Patti LuPone, a true legend of Broadway and musical theater.â âLegendâ is an adjective that, through overuse, has lost much of its meaning, but in the case of Patti LuPone (New York, 1949), it fits the reality perfectly. Her career includes more than sixty theatrical productions in both New York and London. She played Eva PerĂłn in the U.S. premiere of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webberâs 'Evita'; she portrayed Fantine in the now-historic London premiere of Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönbergâs 'Les MisĂ©rables'; and, also in London, she was the first Norma Desmond in Andrew Lloyd Webberâs 'Sunset Boulevard'. She has also played the leading roles in musicals such as âGypsy,â 'Sweeney Todd,â and 'Company,â as well as in plays such as David Mametâs âThe Anarchistâ and Terence McNallyâs âMaster Class,â in which she portrayed Maria Callas.
In fact, another legendary opera singer, Adelina Patti (who, although of Italian origin and raised in New York, was born in Madrid), connects Patti LuPone to Spainâshe is her great-grandnieceâa country where she has never performed until now. Today, June 10, she begins a tour with her show âSongs from a Hat,â which will then take her to Barcelona (June 12), Madrid (June 15), Tenerife (June 19), Gran Canaria (June 21), and Bilbao (June 24).
Thereâs another common thread: sixteen years ago, she took part in the premiere of the musical 'Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown', based on Pedro AlmodĂłvarâs film. âI love his movies; I was thrilled that David Yazbek and Jeffrey Lane created the musical, and I was even happier when they asked me to be part of it. But what moved me the most was sitting next to him during rehearsals. I couldnât believe it! I thought, âIâm sitting next to Pedro AlmodĂłvar!ââ
âOn Broadway, we donât get a day off,â complains Patti LuPone. âOn Mondays, which is our day off, there are always charity galas, and they usually ask us performers to take part. Someone once asked me, âWould you come sing for twenty minutes at a charity gala?â And I thought, âOh my God, now I have to figure out what to sing for twenty minutes.â Then I came up with the idea of putting little slips of paper with song titles in a hat and pulling one out at random to sing. Thatâs how this show was born.â
hiii, does anyone have a copy of that behind the scenes video of Patti on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend singing "Remember That We Suffered"? đ„čđđ
