Pixar Animation Studios Unveils "Loving Dory" Set To Be Screened In Front Of "Gatto", Marking The Studio's Return To Theatrical Short Films
Let's keep swimming.... cause Dory has found love.... well sort of...
As part of the Pixar Animation Studios showcase at Annecy Film Festival revealed a brand new short film "Loving Dory" set in the Finding Nemo universe which will be screened in from of "Gatto" marking the studio's return to theatrical short-films since "Carl's Date" in 2023 and "Bao" in 2018.
The short-film is directed by Lou Hamou-Lhad ("Win Or Lose") with Thomas Newman returning to score the short-film. Though the short looks very similar to the Finding Nemo films, the biggest innovation comes in the previs stage. Hamou-Lhadj showcased a real-time puppetry technique in which characters move through procedurally generated animation while following the animatorâs cursor. Similar technology has been used at studios like Blue Zoo and Spainâs Lightbox Animation, but this marks a first for Pixar.
âThe most important part of this whole thing is that the system is designed to consider the performance as the camera sees it,â explained Hamou-Lhadj. âWeâre always operating with the final shot in mind, solving backward from that. It feels like youâre directing a live performer, telling them where their mark is and embracing improvisation to explore performance possibilities. Restaging is also immediate. There are no translate handles, no rotation widgets, just where the character should be on screen.â
"Loving Dory" Â follows Dory which finally finds love with a plastic bag that drifts into the ocean and that she mistakes for a jellyfish. While the short offers commentary on how human waste disrupts marine life, it does so with a highly comedic tone. We saw rom-com tropes recreated accidentally when Doryâs fin became wrapped in the bagâs handles, allowing it to âpickâ a bouquet of coral for her as they drifted through the ocean together.
"Loving Dory" premieres Spring 2027 in front of "Gatto".

I really liked re-watching the finding dory movie...
Friendly reminder that Marlinâs biggest parenting fear was that his children would hate him and then his only surviving child said âI hate youâ âżââżââż
We all squealed over Baby Doryâs adorableness in âFinding Doryâ. And Pixar knows it (since they obviously did it on purpose).
So imagine if thereâs a third âFinding Nemoâ movieâŚÂ just close your eyes and just picture the cuteness in advance:
Baby.Nemo.
Ok thatâs good enough but picture this:
- Imagine Nemo emerging from his egg for the first time, huge eyes gazing around in wonder, and then locks with Marlinâs
- Imagine Marlin just floating there, staring back because he doesnât even know whether to start rejoicing or burst into tears, because his wife isnât here to see this and she SHOULD be here to see this (along with his 399 other children)
- Imagine baby!nemo tries to swim a bit, but falters and Marlin steadying him, and thatâs when he notices the weak fin. More tears threaten to spill, but Marlin blinks them back (now he feels is not the time to cry)
- Imagine baby!nemo looking up at Marlin after his stumble, and squeaks out the first word that breaks Marlinâs heart âMommy?â
- Imagine Marlin NEARLY breaking down at this point, but contains himself just in time, and shakes his head âNo Son. Daddyâ
- Imagine baby!nemo looking naturally confused by this statement because, shouldnât his mommy be there? But he shrugs it off and snuggles into Marlin
- âDaddy!â
*sees someone begin to explain why they liked finding dory better than finding nemo* alright interesting letâs hear what they-
âmarlin deserved to lose nemoâ
